I took Horrid out for a ride in the forest this morning. I did a route we had done before. We went down into a valley and over a bridge. I wanted to get to a grass track but the path we had taken last time was looking abit wet after all the rain we've had over the last week. I stopped to take a look around and see if there was a dryer route over to where I wanted to go. Herbs must have seen the ponies over on the other hill because suddenly he lept forwards. We landed where the ground was but we where still going down. Herbs had lept into a bog. He sank upto his belly. I quickly pulled him round and just booted him forward. Somehow he managed to pull himself out the bog. I just clung on for grim death I did think about getting off but was worried I may sink in the bog. Atleast Herbs didn't panic and we managed to get out. I think I'll give that route a miss from now on till it's dryer again. (prob not till next summer) I just hope Herbs has learnt his lesson and will listen to me when I ask him not to go somewhere. He was as good as gold for the rest of the ride and went egsactly where I told him to.

Also please could I have some vibes for Merryn. I went to put him out last night and he was very very lame on his right front. :( :( I'm waiting for the farrior to ring me back and say if he can come and have a look. I don't think it's lammi but I have kept him in and put him on strictor rations than he was already on just incase. My OH is realy cross as we havn't even had him a week yet and there is no explaining to him that thats horses sadly. :(
I knew the good run of luck lately had to end sometime. :(

Thanks guys. I still can't believe he did it. Being forest bred I would have thought he would have known about bogs  Never mind atleast we where both ok. I did have visions of the fire brigade having to get us out :o

Merryn has an abscess, I'll bet, so stop worrying. Herbs learnt a good lesson today. Chin up!

Thats what I think but he only had his attack of lami in June and is still obeice :(. He's not showing any other lami signs though so i'm trying to be a little hopeful it's not that.

Oh be really careful of those boggy bits...they appear out of no where at this time of year and are hard to spot sometimes. I got sucked into one with my pony a couple of years ago and the ground literally disappeared from under us. Bless her she managed to scramble out but I've heard since that another pony lost its life in the same place, scary. Avoid lime green tufty grass and places with lots of mud and surface water! Hope Merryn feels better soon x

My daughter and her cob ended up in a clay bog in the Forest last year (near Fritham). She had ridden around that area a lot so this was totally unexpected. That was almost a fire brigade job too but being a big strong boy he managed to pull himself out. The caked on mud was awful but at least they were both ok. She is very wary now and only rides where there are other animals hoofprints. The Forest can be a scary place at times.

Thanks EllieBelly1. I was so annoyed with horrid as I knew it looked boggy thats why I didn't want to risk going along that path and wanted to find another. The bogs are scary and I think thats the one thing I don't like about the forest but normaly I can spot them I look out for moss and marsh grass they are normaly a good indecation. Also my motto is if it doesn't look like the ponies or cows have been there don't go.
I'm glad you and your pony got out ok aswell. That sinking feeling is very scary.

Absolutely..we weren't far from Fritham. Good tip looking for hoofprints, we always look for poo too...to see if the forest ponies have been across the ground recently.

You have to respect the forest and always be on the lookout. Another tip I was once told is if there is a bridge use it It's there for a reason.

Uh-oh - naughty Herbie! But well done him for getting you out of the trouble he got you into! Must have been scary, very glad you got out ok!

Sorry to hear Merryn is lame - hope it is not as bad as it looks or a lami relapse. Vibes coming his way......

Thanks Ommadawn. All I did was yank herbs round, Boot him in the ribs, shout at him very loudly and got very scared. :p Herbs actualy got us both out. :) We both got covered in green slime. We got some funny looks from dog walkers. :D

Normally the more dramatic the lameness (unless fracture of course), the less dramatic the cause, Im always much more scared when a horse just isnt quite right as thats much harder to get to the bottom of!

That is very true. The first foot abscess Lucy had the vets thought she had broken her leg. :( Even when they found the abscess they where still worried because she was so lame. :(
The second abscess she had I thought was Lami as she was on steroids at the time.
Hopefully I'm wrong this time to.
