Well as Pidge is confined to top part of field due to poorly leg (vet thinks twisted fetlock on hard ground last Sunday) and there is no grass on there I bought him some readi grass (think that's the name?) yesterday as he was missing his grass. He has 2 very much reduced feeds a day and ad lib hay. Only on day 5 of 10 days bute and vet not due to see him until the 8th May. Well this morning got to the yard and one of the electric posts was in 3 bits with several small bits in the field

gave him a very very thorough check over, not a scrape on him? no heat in legs and nothing on his head either! even trotted him up on the grass and no sign of anything wrong with him! He did have a rug on last night as normal so maybe that helped to protect him? am now confused as to what exactly happened to break the post!
So have now moved him down the field the other side of Sunny to a slightly larger area (about 20m x 40m as opposed to 20m x 20m) than I would have liked but it has plenty of grass on so I'm hoping he won't break any more posts trying to get to the grass on the other side. Have I done the right thing?

I had a horse that would jump electric fencing to get to better grazing

and if he saw someone coming he'd jump back into the restricted grazing he was meant to be in

When the grass is greener on the other side they always seem to find a way!

I think what you have done sounds sensible. Hope he has a speedy recovery, this ground is a nightmare.

tell me about, this is part of the reason I have horse posts but he has been known to jump them as last year I found him the wrong side of the tape! touch wood he hasn't been tempted to do that since, but am dreading it next Sunday as taking Sunny to local RC show and leaving Pidge at the yard. don't know whether to leave him in his box or in the field?
Am trying to convinvce myself I've done the right thing as he looks fine and nothing obvious when trotting but he is supposed to be resting it

not trashing electric posts

Thanks Izt, fingers crossed for you for that person coming to see Sam, hope everything goes well xxx

Despite the fact that she's lame on both front legs, and only ever jumped about 2' before, mine happily pops 2'9"ish to get out of her pen! Maybe Pidge took himself out for a night-time wander and put himself back in again?! Actually, it sounds to me like he's tried to get out and the fence post shattered.

little buggers aren't they

just can't understand how it snapped into 3 and then there were little bits in the field as well buthe hasn't got a mark on him? even had sis check him out as was convinced there should be something on him! roll on 8th May when vet comes out and then fingers crossed he is sound and I can get him back to normal field wise and riding wise. I could have understood it if it was the fence next to Sunny and he was trying to get in with him but it was the other fence on to the main yard!

would he be ok in there for most of the day especially as no other horses are in at the moment? he has a big box and rubber matting with a deep shavings bed. would it be worth leaving a radio on for him? he does get a bit stressed when Sunny is away from him and calls constantly

hmm never thought of that, should have checked the ground for signs of rolling, will check it tonight as he's now off that bit. thanks.

Is it those plastic electric posts you're on about? They shatter easily, he could well have been leaning over it and it could have broken and shot pieces across the field. We have had many an unexplained broken electric fence post, some of them clean breaks and some shattered everywhere!

If you think he'll be more settled out, and there are other horses out then I'd leave him out. But if you think he might charge round the field screaming for Sunny I'd leave him in.

yes it was the horse one in plastic about 5' tall I think. think he may have put head through as we have 2 strands across it to get at grass and perhaps got caught in it?

the horses normally in the next field will not be there as one is going to comp and other will be in box as recovering from a foot injury. however the horses in the field the other side of the hedge will be out all day. he doesn't tend to run around much when on his own just screams for Sunny

reason they are seperate is if together they play loads and race round and stand on back legs etc etc! oh god dammit don't know what to do
mad.gif
what if I leave him out and he tries to jump the electric tape
crazy.gif
but if I leave him in he'll get stressed! aghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

unfortunately not, they are a strange bunch up there! the one that will be in is on the main yard, my box is in an indoor barn. think he may be better out with all that grass to keep him occupied! is it easier having kids than horses?

Plastic elec fence posts break easily...my boy has shattered a few in his time too in a bid to get to the better grass and he has never had a mark on him either!
