Navicular, any positive outcomes?

Hello all,
I was just wondering if there is anybody with any positive experience of horses with navicular?
A friends horse has been lame recently, and today the vet came out to see him. The vet thinks it's Navicular.
He will be going to the vets next week for nerve blocks and x-rays, but the vet has, of course, put the worst case scenario into the owners head, and they are understandably upset by this. I'm hoping somebody will be able to reply with a "yes, my horse has navicular and is still ridden" type response, so they can at least have a little hope whilst they wait for the tests/results, that this isn't the end of it all.
Thank you in advance for any replies.

(I know this should be in Vets, but more people come in here.)
 
This is someone on my yard.

I mentioned looking into going barefoot when the horse was first diagnosed, but the owners didn't want to hear it at the time.

18 months later and after spending ££££ on remedial shoes and still having a lame horse, they came to me and asked about this barefoot lark:)

Now their horse is sound (and has been since shoes removed) and they are doing watever they want.

Yes, my horse has navicular and we still do stuff like this:

yes, my TB has navicular and is still ridden, barefoot and sound

yes, my warmblood mare has navicular and is still ridden - barefoot , sound, been out hunting

yes, my friends appy has navicular and is still ridden - barefoot and still on the road to recovery but hacking 3-4 times per week and getting visibly stronger by the day

Mine had a chipped navicular bone, after getting a cortozone (sp) injection came sound and it never bothered him. Although he wasnt fond of jumping on hard ground so that was the only real blip, that we had to be careful what type of ground we rode on.
 
Ive known horses in the past that have had navicular and after the correct courses of medication ie, navilox they come right and carried on riding and even jumping, obviously you be carefull eg. not trotting on roads cantering/jumping on hard ground. There is hope especially if its early on and the correct care is given. I also know one show horse that was managed carefully that went on to compete and get placed a Royal Windsor Horse Show.
Although on a dark note ive also known horses to be diagnosed with it and never be ridden!

I hope the first half does give you some reassurence.:)

Thats a wonderful photo for all us Navicular owners.

My horse was diagnosed in March last year, and thanks to a brilliant vet and remedial farrier she is consistently sound and ridden (Apart from when its icy) 5 days a week. Hoping to start jumping in the spring if she continues to remain sound. Have put her on grass livery to avoid having her standing in a stable and she runs with a herd. She is thriving and loving work.
Its such a shock when its first diagnosed and of course it depends on exactly what the diagnosis is, but there is life after navicular.

No that was me. I saw Brucea's reply and it was horribly mis-spelled. I know Brucea is a good speller so I typed, "Are you drunk".

Then all of a sudden Brucea's reply had no errors. It was my laptop!

It made no sense so I just corrected it to "ditto this".

But your sharp eyes found me out!

It just made me laugh........oh.. and I AM finishing off the Xmas champers :D

:( I am detoxing.

I have had 4 foodpacks (hot chocolate) and 4 litres of water a day for the last 2 days.

And I have needed to pee every 20 minutes since!
 
Yes my mare has had a great outcome - she was diagnosed about 8 years ago she was lame and we tried the barefoot route it didnt work for us but remedial shoeing did. She is sound with no bute just the remedial shoeing every 6 weeks on the dot.
She is doing incredibly well with very few bad days but I take good care of the what I do with her and the ground I do it on.
All horses cope with pain differently but so many people are quick to write off navicular horses.
 
firstly can i just say i am very sorry xx
i have had 2 very different experiances.
first is my share pony. she is now sound, and we are very careful with her, but after remedial shoeing she can now do everything but jump, as long as the ground is ok.

secondly, my cloud was diagnosed with navicular and everything fell apart. her tendon surrounding was damaged and it was making her very lame and unhappy. her future was looking extremly bleak and pts was mentioned. luckily, we followed the vets advice which was to take of her shoes and chuck her out in the field.
she is now sound and happy. she will spend the rest of her days as a field ornament though.
