Two 'posh' wash boxes, all on ''bobbly' ruber matting. Murphy comes in from field to be washed off. Use hot power hose. He is cross tied. (Murph is 16.2hh coloured cob, 7 years old and scared of alot!)
There is me and main groom G. Iam putting rug on another horse and suddenly G is on her bum, hot power hose snaking about everywhere and frantic panicking Murphy is thrashing about breaking everything within his reach to escape. His head collar breaks and he bolts out in to the outer yard.

Can't catch him for a month of sundays, so open his stable door and he puts himself to bed. He is a quivering wreck, poor horse.
Anyway, turns out that now the stable matting has been used, swept and scrubbed clean on numerous occasions (new in September '09) that the bobbles are going. When wet its very slippery, and G slipped over, letting the coiled hose snake, squirting water all over everything including the horse! G is very bruised but luckily Murphy avoided her (that would have been nasty).
These stables were built with good advice from the pro's, but it turns out that the rubber matting can be lethal. (its a bugger to sweep too). Just to prove that some things might look amazing, but actually it might not work out as well as hoped.

((NOT MY STABLES I MIGHT ADD))

I have not had a problem with my rubber mats but have stable mattress in two and bobble ones in another. Don't think they would be up to a wash box though. Rubber and alot of water is asking for trouble I would have thought. I would take them out immediately before someone gets really hurt. Glad your friend and horse are ok.
Just edited to say when we first had our horse box with rubber mats only and one horse peed it was like an ice rink . We now have shavings on top. I have no idea how people get away with just rubber mats

Nasty sounding accident, glad nobody hurt more. Perhaps the rubber mats were only guaranteed for X period of years and they are overdue replacement?

Only a guess.

Hmm, we have a similar setup at our yard.

Yard has been open since 2006 and wash box is used daily by numerous people.

Some horses have objected to being cross-tied but have never slipped and the rubber isn't slippy for human's either.

I would have thought the pour on rubber flooring would have been far more suitable than rubber matting for a washbox. Ive never seen a washbox totally covered in rubber matting as had always heard they were too slippy. Many of the big studs in the US have wash boxes with concrete floors with one moveable thick rubber mat covering half the floor in them.
I have lways found rubber matting in horse boxes to get slippery if no beeding is used on top too.

I know I shouldn't have, but I did have a chuckle at the hose snaking around description - its like a possessed creature isn't it?! I must admit I dont know why there is rubber matting in situ in a hosing off area, as previously said non-porous rubber and water is not a good mix. Glad no harm was done, although horsey might be a bit reluctant to be hosed off there next time! Good Luck with that.

I have washed my mats many times and they are as good as the day I bought them apart from the usual stable stains that don't disappear no matter how much you scrub them.
(common on any matting)

I would reccommend these mats every time.. and they are Equimat.

They still have all their grip and after sampling many different types of matting Equimat were the only ones that came up trumps.
Best decision I ever made in buying them

My mats have bobbles one side and grooves on the other, aparantly draining grooves. I laid mine as advised, bobbles up but turned them over soon after as I found them very slippy when wet and hard to brush. Touch wood, Ive not had a problem since. Friends were done proffesionally, all sealed etc and they laid them groove side up.

Eeeek, sorry checked mine today and they are bobble side up.... sorry. I did change them over when I first got them as they were slippy but I changed them to bobbly side up.
