Need a dressage trainer in NI help!!!!

Hi all ,

I am looking to find a dressage trainer for me and my 4year old over here in northern Ireland only been here a year myself and am going for a jumping lesson with Mavis Stewart on Monday :-) I am a experienced rider but want to make sure me and my boy are heading in the right direction for his first season ,any advice would be amazing Thankyou x

What part of NI are you in?

There are quite a few around. If you look on the BHS website or contact NI dressage you should be able to get in touch with a few.

I live in Lisburn , Thankyou been looking for ages it's just knowing rhinos good and so on and so forth , Alison mastin name keeps popping up il try find contact details

I took dressage lessons with a lovely lady out near Lisburn. I will PM you her contact details. Very good instructor. I've heard great things regarding Mavis too.

I would recommend Carolyn Mellor in Comber. If you do a search under Vision Sport Horses you will get her number there.

I have also been taught by Alison Mastin Moore who is also very good.

There is also Dale Roberts near comber although I don't know what his teaching is like.

Yeah unheard great things about Mavis Stewart from the tack shop I work at so l am really looking forward to Monday :-) just need to make sure I am doing my boy credit x
 
Hi and welcome to NI :) I'd thoroughly recommend Alison, but personally wouldn't go to one of the ones who's already been mentioned and would steer well clear of one who hasn't been mentioned yet :D

You might be interested in the NIRCLC website which gives details of lessons and camps with the likes of Donald Kear and Tim Downes, both of whom are fantastic trainers who are over here several times a year.
 
FYI I know that an instructor was travelling over from Talland to teach at Gransha EC, I think monthly. May have been for a fixed term only but may be worth investigating. Also highly recommend the NI Riding Club 'Camps' down in Fermanagh (I preferred to BHS camps). I'm in Moira so know most of the local names - to be honest it's such a personal thing you nearly have to dip your toe in here and there until you find someone you 'click' with. (I've had lessons with one or two mentioned above and frankly got very little out of them - impressive riding doesn't = impressive instruction!)

What do you think Rowreach? ;)

Rowreach, yes, a few years ago now but did have a few lessons with AM. But at the time I was disappointed.

I've recently heard great things about Alan Dewhurst who has, apparently, mellowed (!) and in the past I have had some excellent lessons with Joanne Jarden too.
 
So what was the outcome - who did you find??

I had a lesson last night with one of the aforementioned instructors - have to say it was disappointing and I'm left feeling unsure as to what to do next!

I was taught by Alison a great number of years ago and I thought she was very good. Alison is also one of the judges at the higher levels in Dressage Ireland (Elementry onwards).Everyone has different preferences and find they click with different instructors. I remember a number of years ago being taught by one of the FBHS from England. Yet others in the yard were not that impressed. I thought they were brilliant and if I got a chance to get chance to be taught by them again I would jump at it!!

Another local II I will not be taught by as they make me feel useless. Others think they are great yet I nearly gave up because of them as they made me feel that I was crap and I was never going to improve. (Yet when they spoke to other people they stated how talented I was :( ).

Alan is my trainer, he is fantastic :) Tells it like it is and won't accept anything but the best you can do - have been getting great results with him! I don't know if he is taking on new people though?

Sasha Stewart also gives lessons, but she is in richhill which would be about 30mins from you - she is very good also :)

Depends how far you want to travel really, Alison Mastin Moore is excellent as well, haven't had a lesson from her personally but as a judge she is very fair but correct.

You will find though that nearly all of the dressage trainers here judge as well :)

I wouldn't name names in a public forum. And the majority of people taught by this person think they are great. We obviously didn't click ;)

I have had a few lessons with Dale Roberts and have been really pleased with my results and how my horse and I are now riding..as has already been mentioned, a coach/instructor is a very personal choice and you do need to go round the houses so to speak to get the right person for you and your horse..good luck and I hope you have great fun in NI
 
Can you recommend a trainer for someone who loves good hard work and a trainer who starts from the basics? More specifically I'm looking for someone who is tough on me but gentle on the horse. :)

Out of the people who I have seen competing at dressage, I like Lucy Adam's style of riding the most. Does she still teach?
 
Im in Portadown area, ready to travel about 40 miles one way. I currently go to a local riding school but they are way too easy on me there :)
 
Where is Alison mastin Moore based?
Has anyone been to Alison Davies? A friend has been trying to get lessons with Lucy for a while but she's extremely busy it seems.

I'm looking for someone to help my with my baby PRE to instill correct going from the start.
