My horse was kicked 2 weeks ago, nothing bad just a little graze but she is the type of horse to swell quite bad over the smallest of nicks so i carried on riding her lightly and luckily she didn't swell too much just a little puffy in the mornings but that had always gone by the time i had finished riding.

Well i didn't go down over the weekend and when i got down on Monday her leg had swelled right up which didn't help by the fact she had had to stay in due to the weather. She had heat in it this time round but was not lame so as a precaution i went to the vets and collected some antibiotics.

I have been hacking her all week mainly walking and by the time i get back to the yard the swelling has almost disappeard apart from a tiny bit round the cut. She has no heat now and she still isn't lame. The only problem is by the morning the swelling is back up again although admittedly its getting less and less each day.

Now my problem is, i have a show tomorrow that was arranged before all this happened so my question is, do i take her, bandage her legs up and give her plenty of time before hand walking around and warming up or do i pull out??

If this was a one off thing that happened then i would pull out but it happens everytime she nicks herself (even if she just brushes) and i always just ride her through it as long as there is no heat or lameness but i'm just worried as i wouldn't usually jump. what do you guys think??

No she is not lame, she was trying to tank off with me Wednesday and we had a nice rodeoing session too so i am guessing its not hurting her too much LOL

nope doesnt sound like it hun !! id take her to be honest - bandage it up to give support and as you say walk her around on it to help swelling go down first !! keep an eye on her during the day etc

how about putting some cooling gel on it overnight to help reduce the swelling and heat ?? x x

Also are you riding on a surface or grass tomorrow ??

I haven't got any cooling gel but i have been hosing it twice a day even though the heat has been completely gone for a few days now.

Definatly gonna bandage her up though!!

Its grass tomorrow, i'm jumping at Felbridge. Not jumping til the afternoon though so will see how she is in the morning and might even take her for a walk around the block first thing

Agree with Stacey, keep her banaged while your riding her in etc and may even pay to put some bandages on tonight??? Sure she'll be fine...

Have to ask tho - I take it YO or someone else was watching her over the weekend?? lol

If it were me I wouldn't compete her - but then I wouldn't compete anything that I was having to question whether I should or not because of possible injury worries.

Felbridge normally isnt to bad and hopefully witht he rain not hard !! bandage tonight and re evaluate in the morning !!

Im at oldencraig tomorrow so may see you on the way down tehre !! x x
