I saw someone do the Pied Piper of Hamlin. The pony dragged along a sheet with rats made of stuffed tights attatched. Pony was very quiet though and could possibly spook others. This won the class.
My aunt dressed her palamino as a camel once. Attatched a couple of cushions to a surcingle and covered with a sheet and put some tassels on her bridle. Aunt wore a kaftan type thing. She came 2nd.

Boys usually want to look quite 'macho', so what about one of the Superheroes, Spiderman/Batman etc?
Lovely little pony!

ETA, leader could go dressed as Catwoman

I did fancy dress with my pony when I was a kid, I went as a jouster, so that could be good for a boy too: (sorry, photos of photos as I don't have a scanner)

There's a thread about fancy dress in Stable Yard - there are some more good ideas there

I agree with Lucifer, given the colouring of pony & child (both very cute!), he should go as the Milky Bar Kid. It's also nice & simple without too much 'clutter' to upset the pony if the weather is hot and/or, as in our case recently pony objected to being 6ft from the speaker with the innane comments of the compere making her jump and step sideways each time he spoke while the judges deliberated a large class!

I'd suggest to fashion a larger than normal saddle cloth with the legend 'The Milky Bars are on Me' in big enough letters of contrasting colour (we cut out and glue felt as it doesn't fray and is clearer than felt tip pen or paint) to be read from the ringside as well as by the elderly possibly short sighted judge (they're almost always retired IME). Also make sure as handler you're complimentarily dressed as well to complete the picture (eg cow girl costume, western boots and hat).
Also remember that he will have to wear his riding hat underneath his fancydress, one lady had to abandon as her boys headgear was too small to fit over his riding hat.

I'd also suggest buy some big bars of Milky Bar open carefully, consume chocolate yourself

and refill with cardboard for the day otherwise they'll melt and go soggy, and you wouldn't want that would you?! (I suppose you could always write to Nestles and ask if they can send you some packaging and/or small samples to distribute...)

I once did a Super Man theme. I wore a superman top, cape and an eye mask thing and the pony also wore a cape behind his saddle with the superman logo and an eye mask with blue boots! It was cute and the judges liked the idea. That looks like it would suit them well

I saw a little lad dressed as a soldier, he wore camaflage (sp) gear and pony had long grass, buttercups, foliage on a rug made of army netting very good, or boy as police man and pony as criminal/vice versa, obviously police outfit and pony with arrows painted on with face paint etc, and a little black mask.
