I have a 4 year old section A, currently wintering out, unrugged, that I bought for my 3 year old daughter, we intend to get them out to some little shows on the lead rein this year.

Or we did - until one of the yard 'experts' told my elder daughter yesterday that we should sell said pony, when she asked why? The 'Expert' told her that "because then maybe someone would buy her who would put a rug on her"! Daughter replied ermm it's a Welsh MOUNTAIN pony, it's as fat as butter and has a coat like a yak! Response - "she should still have a rug on!" Arrghhhh - anyone want to save her from obvious total neglect?

I've got a fat, fluffy Section A that needs rescuing too. She's out naked in a field full of my rugged up warmbloods, there's cruel!
 
Quick..... Someone call the RSPCA lol!! I would tell the so called expert to shove her opinions where the sun don't shine! Plenty of horses do just fine with no rug.... Especially little hairy hardy types like yours. I have to say she really is the cutest little thing..... Good luck at the shows with her.
 
Shame on you! You should know that the yard 'expert' is the font of all knowledge and should be obeyed at all costs.....NOT! Pony is a cutie, by the way. I have Welshies aged 31 and 30 which have gone naked most of their lives and still going strong. Good luck with her and show that yard 'expert' that going naked will do her no harm. Maybe she should try it!!!!!:D

Every yard has a resident 'Expert'. They normally have a horse, but never run out of reasons why they can't ride at the moment. They are at the yard all day, drinking tea & bad mouthing anyone that actually goes there to spend time with their horse & actually ride. They have an opinion on everything & are determined to voice it whether anyone wants to hear it or not. Normally it's total rubbish they spout...............does this sound familiar?
 
She is so cute.

I've had someone offerd to buy a rug for my youngster as he "must be cold". His hair is so long u cant find his skin and hes so warm and tostie even in -10.
 
Hmmm. I foolishly tried to rug my mini Shets during the snow and I found that within a couple of hours they were sweating badly. I bring them in at night and they have a field shelter during the day but I suspect they actually enjoy the snow. First thing they did when let out on the snowy morning was to find a space to have a good roll. When I dig my fingers into their thick coats they are warm as toast. I wouldn't rug them again unless they were clipped and that is not going to happen!

LOL, at your Yard Expert. Don't you know you're supposed to rug Welshies up and overfeed them over winter so they can be extra obese when the grass starts coming out? :rolleyes:
 
You cruel cruel person!!! How could you do that to something so adorable :p My fell would be out without a rug if she wasn't clipped cos shes got a monster coat!! Hence my reason to clip. Tell the yard 'expert' where to get off! Someone (neighbour) once dobbed me to the RSPCA after having an argument as I left my horses out with rugs on and apparently due to snow ? it didn't. They told the RSPCA I left them out with NZ rugs and did nothing with them. They got fed twice a day with hay ect. RSPCA officer happened to come to the yard whilst I was grooming my pony and me (15 at the time) was like :eek: whats going on?!?! RSPCA officer wasn't too impressed to come to a pointless call out to see my fat pony and then complimented me on my fields and said she wished her horse could have this. :cool: She phoned the person up and told them everything was fine and not to waste time again. :rolleyes: Oh dear.... :p

some idiot last year tried to put a rug on my sec A (having climbed over fence into private grazing) they left it on gate as they couldnt catch him, it was very funny though watching them following him around the paddock for over an hour waving rug at him & shouting "hear little pony" (yard had CCTV) whilst the OAP dartmoor (in no fill T/O) tried to mug their pocket for food & bite her bum/boobs (he is such a dirty old man!). The rug was 6ft 9" & very knackered LOL.

your little lad is very sweet.

Three of ours are rugged, but only because one is clipped, one had rainscald and the lightweight leaked, and the other so's she is dry when it's work time; the fourth one is a Trad Cob and he really doesn't want a rug on thank you very much :D

You're very restrained :D. I think that if I had proof that someone was on private land and being a pain in the butt to my horsese, I'd have been having words :D :D :D

Can you imagine what a 6'9" rug would look like on a Sec A?! My 16.3hh DWB takes that size; the poor little thing would have disappeared :eek::rolleyes::D

When I saw this I thought how heart breaking, then read your post and couldn't stop laughing!! Some people need a kick!! We have ex-racehorses at my yard that are rugged up and live out, over night in the middle of winter... they seem to cope fine!!
If you want, put her in an envelope and post her to me, I'll show her how Sec A's should be treated!!!

someone (another yard expert wannabe!) tried to tell me that my little dartmoor needed a rug last winter, he was turned out in all the elements with no rug, had a beautiful coat and was always warm, he didn't lose weight at all and was the healthiest on the yard!
her horse however was a shire, she rugged it in 2 heavy weight rugs even when the temp was at 2c, then she went on to weigh the feed and hay. by the end of winter her horse looked like a TB with a shires head.
 
i wasnt that restrained Mrsmistletoe i reported them to law for trespass & causing undue stress to the ponies, she seemed to like repoting me to RSPCA too.

will have to see if YO still has the copy & may well get it uploaded, it was quite funny.

A friends 3 section a colts have just come in from winter grazing RSPCA were called to them...apparently he laughed when he arrived cos they are positively fat and he was called because they had no food or shelter in the snow...they had piles of hay!!!:rolleyes:

All 3 are what would be classed as overweight and now because of idiots they are confinded to a stable because they have no other grazing to put them on.

I do with people would read up on breeds before condeming the owners as cruel. They are Welsh MOUNTAIN ponies...clue is in the name folks they are bred to live on our lovely stunning HARSH Welsh Mountains!!!:rolleyes:

Horribly neglected looking creatures these!!! Wild Welsh Mountain Ponies near me. Skin and bone and appauling condition and they graze on and around the beaches with barely any 'proper' grass!!!! ;)
 
On a serious note, what a deeply unpleasant thing to say to a child (I assume your eldest is a child). The expert in question sounds like a real bully as well as an ignoramus and I would be having a quiet word along the lines of, "Don't go near my kids again unless you want to be looking for your teeth five minutes later."
 
Haha, damn the yard experts :p I'm lucky that I'm on a yard where there is just me and the YO and our 2 horses. Although she does occasionally try to tell me what to do, I started putting my horses hay on the floor and when I text YO the next morning to ask if she'd eaten it all as YO was turning them out, received a text back saying that my horse was a pig and I should put her hay in a haynet. That was over a month ago and Ethel's hay is still on the floor :) There have been some other things she has said to me that I tend to just say "yeaahhh" to, and then never do it.

Super cute pony btw, I want her!! :D
 
Wow, it seems a lot of you are equally as cruel and neglectful as us!! Seriously this pony has wintered out unrugged every year (bought her as a yearling) and I fear to think what she would look like if she wintered in or was rugged as she comes out of the Winter still like a little heifer!! She would be morbidly obese if she was a pampered pony :)! This is her in her summer coat to prove she doesn't always look like a yak :)

As far as the 'Expert' goes this is the same 'Expert' who also told my same daughter our Section C would never be able to be ridden as she would have "brittle bones" as we didn't give her hard feed. The same section C who was broken, shown, qualified for BSPS Winter Champs first time out, has won at County level and has just started X-Country Schooling with huge enthusiasm - still waiting for those "brittle bones" to show themselves!

What would we do without such expert advice!!
 
Well I think you should be ashamed of yourself.Poor little poppet.She should be fully clipped out (so that she looks pretty and like a PROPER competition pony.)Then fully rugged up 24 hours a day with big buckets of feed.Should she ever go outdoors even for 10 minutes she needs over reach boots,leg boots (all matching ofcourse) and a full rug with neck piece.If she becomes a little(?)over the top on this regime there are plenty of calmers you can give her and plenty of good body protectors/hats for your tot when she finally manages to climb aboard.
