I understand your point lzt, but it has been confirmed that the welfare organisations were "monitoring" the horses for the last month which means that either the horses were in this state a month ago or their decline has been so rapid that it could not possibly have been missed by anyone keeping an eye on them. I realise that we don't know all the facts, but this alone is shameful.

okay, to pick up on this, if the welfare charities were THAT concerned they'd have insisted the horse get vetinary attention. So, at the least a vet would have advised adequate feed, and medication / boxrest. Its blatantly clear that this horse wasnt being fed as it should have done, certainally not more than once a day, if at all....
On this point alone, I feel the welfare charities have let these animals down. The main welfare charity involved here has the powers to insist an animal recieves vetinary care, and clearly this didnt happen.

The charities are maintaining that they could do nothing because the vet they had consulted had said the horses were not suffering! The contention on this forum is that the vet was clearly an .... (insert your choice of word here)... and that a second opinion should have been sought. It is apparent to everyone who has seen the pictures that action should have been taken and that greater measures could have, and should have, been taken by the welfare organisations to ensure this.
This is my first post on this site.. still trying to work it all out.. but joined really just because of this thread (saw a link to it on New Rider)and to say a huge thank you to everyone involved in saving these horses from a horrible death. I also wanted to donate and show my appreciation.
I know New Rider members are also donating and also appreciate the lengths you have gone to.. Well done.. now for that champagne
Just wanted to say a big well done to everyone on all the threads for seeing this one through. Can't believe Andy being non-horsey went to all the effort to find this forum and raise the alarm in the first instance and go back to see it through, he deserves a medal! So glad to read that it's a happy ending for at least 2 of them and I've donated via just giving. Huge achievement
Who knows how the horses presented a few weeks ago, what the owners had to say for themselves at the time, or what plans were in place to monitor the horses. At the end of the day, welfare organisations have to work within legislation and may well have felt frustrated themselves at not being able to do more.

Thats very true, and we dont know all the facts about what happened a month ago. But as I understand it (and please correct me if I'm wrong), there have been concerned "neighbours" who have reported these poor creatures, and nothing was done.
Its shameful that Andy was told to "badger" the RSPCA to do something or at least go out and look.
How would it be if those ponies were children? Would the reaction be different? Would poeple be talking about vilification? I think not.
