Hi all - has anyone got any pictures of outdoor arenas with netting on the fencing?
Looking to do this to mine asap, not only to stop the surface escaping but also I was hoping it might aesthetically smarten the place up, make it look a bit more professional and "finished". (Arena is bordered by post and rail, which I creosote every year to smarten it up but it seems to fade within a few months! There is grazing on 3 sides and rough grass patch on the fourth, strange but it just from a distance looks like a load of fencing and not a defined arena!).

I've been offered brown, black or green netting. I just worry that the darker colours might make the arena seem quite more claustrophobic than I am used to, but the green sample I have is very bright! So would love to see some pictures if anyone else on here has something similar.

thank you!!

I only have chicken wire between bottom and first rung so to speak to stop the rabbits getting in, but am sure that I have seen lovely green netting around NMT/Princess Sparklies arena so maybe search their threads for photos?

Fab thanks, have them both on fb so will have a look there. our arena is at the top of a hill and everything seems very spooky in there (even normally sensible sorts!), although its open and not enclosed, just 3 rails of post and rail: I wonder if this might help give them a bit more security.

They have green galebreak-type stuff on my yard, sorry no pictures but it seems very effective and looks tidy :) I guess it's probably slightly faded now as it's quite a nice shade of green :D

Ah ha! Found a hugely uninspiring still from the "summer".

I've just bought 150m of the 1m wide green stuff to go round our school and have to say it looks pretty good! It's quite bright green and makes the arena feel much more enclosed. I can't wait to ride in it!

It was just over £100 for 150m and feels pretty sturdy. Will try to get a photo, but to be honest, looks the same as it does in PS's arena .. maybe a little brighter :)

I have got a very bright green netting around an agricultural barn that was just one sided but we fenced off and netted to make a cozy corral space for the ponies, but it is super bright and I think a bit spooky for the arena so I was verging towards black. Much the same price as yours - technically scaffold net!

Interested how some of you have it on the inside of the rails and some on the outside, which looks neat, mine will have to go on the inside as I can't be rebuilding the arena but hopefully will look smart and stop my arena piling up in the fields and disappearing off when harrowed!

Stops the surface getting kicked out (if rubber) or blow out (if sand/fibre) and helps prevent it freezing over.

not sure how useful this is, but mine also claims to reduce the shade.... It's basically a windbreak with tiny tiny holes so guess it has lots of uses :) We bought it mainly to avoid losing all our rubber over the top of the boards

ours had to go on the inside too. In an ideal world you're meant to put a baton over the top of it, but our fence was already up and we didn't have any extra materials to do this. We used galvanised staples and basically fixed it to the kick boards and to the top of the fence. Looks very neat. Then we put some additional cable ties round too.

I have the green mesh stuff around my arena too, it looks exactly like Dressagecrazy's picture, i put it on the inside of the three rail post and rail fence that encloses my school, did it myself with staples and it was really easy to do, and its been there years and it works very well.

I'm going to do this to ours next year but the primary reason is to keep the majority of the bl**dy autumn leaves out! (Secondary is to keep surface in;))

I am resurrecting this old thread since actually it covers my question (i.e. which netting should I use?) but also to encourage those posters who said they were going to do it to post an update AND please recommend me a product to use (hopefully with a pic so I can see what it looks like actually on the fence). I have zero idea what to use and I definitely need something to keep the rubber in AND the rabbits out.

If I type "green mesh netting" into ebay I get a scarily large number of results which would take me hours to go through so I am being lazy and hoping someone has already done all of this work and can recommend a good product! I have post and rail fencing and was planning to staple it on.

ETA: one side of my school is hedges so I will have to staple it on the inside.

back to my original question ... can anyone actually just post a link to the mesh they used? I have to order some ASAP as I am really tired of the rabbits trying to dig up my school but have absolutely no idea what to get?

thanks!

Thanks MP; does it feel sturdy? My house is in a pretty windy spot!

I was planning on stapling to the inside- do you have any pics of the finished product you could share? Thank you!

We had to put ours on the inside too. I'd have preferred to put it outside, as then the prevailing wind would blow it against the fence, rather than away from the fence, but the way they've put the arena fence up made it impossible. I'll take some pics this eve :) YEs, feels pretty sturdy, we also catch a good breeze on the school ;)

Thank you, that would be so helpful.

Its annoying as 3 sides of my school are "open" but one side has a tree line. I suppose I could try to sit in the trees and staple it on ... will have to see if I can get the right angle!

We've only done 2 sides for now, those 2 are the sides most exposed to the wind, and consequently leaves & weed seedlings etc. Got a bit of tidying up to do but here's how it looks at the moment.
I'm intending to play it by ear really as to whether or not we do the other sides, and whether we end up needing a baton over the top or not. Time will tell ;)
I do wish we had got organised enough to pop it up before they put the fence rails up, as I'd really rather it was tucked behind the kickboards, but hey ho, it'll do the job I'm sure.

That looks amazing! I am ordering now.

I am going to do all 4 sides of mine + gate primarily because of rabbits and to keep the rubber in. I agree about the kick boards, I am going to prise mine off and then nail them back in place unless I manage to get round the trees and staple from the outside!

Good luck with the kickboards :) I expect we will do the same, in time :/ In the meantime, the netting covers the top board, and the bottom one pokes up about 1-2" above the surface. We are having some sheep in the adjacent paddock, so it was a quick job to avoid having a school full of sheep poo!
