Never give your dog away... Gumtree

They are not of a normal thought process thats for sure.:(

I do have a guide (another guide you say):o:D just call me Cayla Guide Giver:D:D
It's about (the best course of action/what to exhaust when having to part with an animal) I will post tomorrow from home as cannot access me word docs from work:p

Maybe we could spread it about more and use it to send messages on ads to those giving freebies away on Gum tree, maybe we can all reg for the sake of messaging folk, im sure alot of us could try and get trough to the ignorant masses, worth a try even if only half take on board what we are saying.:)

That's a really good idea Cayla...
By the way, do you sleep? Ever? :D

Ha ha, yes I do :D I will be off to bed soon, which in turn means I will be on here once again no doubt at stupid o clock because my sleep pattern is well and truely fecked:p

Here is the guide (what do you think peoples):p

When having to part with a pet try and exhaust a few things before resorting to a free ad site/newspaper by doing to following......

1, Try your nearest rescue center and ask if they can place your dog/cat/exotic/rabbit/small animal on their homing list or ask if they can be added to their rescue website (we do this and place it as a private rehome). Try where possible to give plenty of notice as the more time/notice you give the better chance a good quality home can be found.

2, Make a poster with picture to put up in your local vets and state a home check/charge will be applied (never state the animal is FREE) offering animals for free opens up a huge market of unsuitable home some that will come forward with no financial means to care for the pet but instead seek it on whim for the sake of it being FREE, you pet could end up being re sold a few days later (this is very common)

3, Where possible and very important, make sure the animal is neutered as this could guarantee a more genuine pet home and put off potential wanna be breeders wanting the animal for that purpose for monitary gain, if your pet should end up in a breeding farm changes are they will never see the light of day again.
If the animal is not neutered and you cannot afford to neuter, if you get an interested party ask for the price of neuter for the animals and where possibly ask them to pay direct to the vet and book the animal for neuter before it goes to it's new home.
If you receive benefits then contact the RSPCA/Dogs trust for a neutering voucher or contact your local PDSA for cut price neutering. Also try your local rescue as they may be able to help with neutering.

4, Microchip the pet (why)? this means you can keep the microchip registered in your name until you are satisfied you animal is settled and in a genuine loving home before relinquishing ownership via the microchip, it also means if your pet is passed around or the worst case scenario ends up abused/neglected you will find out as it will be you contacted via the chip details. Make the new owner aware of this and keep in frequent contact until such time you transfer the chip.
If vaccinated then hold onto the vaccine card until the pet has settled and mail it on at a later date.

5, Charge a fee for the animal, if you feel you cannot justify it, total the cost a vaccinations, chip and neutering and charge at least that or half of that and explain why (you do not want to give you pet away for free).

6, Be aware not all home even those they portray to be are genuine, it is not uncommon for animals who are given away for FREE or at very short without thorough checks and due care to end up re sold, used as bait animals (thrown in with fighting dogs/breeds for purpose of training), used for breeding purpose or abused/killed in short succession of being passed on.
Some unscrupulous people make it their mission to seek free or cheap animals solely for the above purpose.

7, Explain that you ideally would like to take the animal to it's new home as this will give you a chance to see the environment the animal is going to/check the garden/ask some questions and get a better feel for the home/people taking your pet on and the means by which they ca care for the pet.
Where you can always offer "back up" incase the new home does not work out so the animal can be returned to you for rehome and not passed on.

The above is the very least you can do to try and secure you pet a new home should you circumstance change meaning you can no longer care for the animals and be aware there are some unscrupulous people out there so be on your guard and be very thorough in your rehome.

Something like the above and obs anyone add whatever you all feel can help with the advice on rehoming responsibly.:)

Cayla that's such a good point about the microchipping. None of our animals will ever be given away sold anyway, but I hadn't realised you could keep microchips registered in your name. I wonder how many people know this?

One of my liveries is a Head Veterinary Nurse at a large local practice. I think every one of the very large staff, including the vets, has animals that have been dumped on them by their clients - and I suppose the most you can say for those clients is that they did bring them to the practice and not just leave them tied up somewhere or advertise them on Gumtree or TradeIt. These (now treasured) animals include 7-8 dogs, cats galore, rabbits, guinea-pigs, hamsters, horses ...my friend's latest are two ferrets, dumped at the practice because the jill was pregnant - there are now 8 little ones.

I despair of peoples' behaviour over their animals. they give them away like you might give an unwanted handbag. And yes, 8 of our 9 dogs over the years have been give-aways, rescues, or dumped. Doesn't worry us as we've loved them all dearly, but how I would like to meet some of their ex-owners!!!

Cayla the guide giver I like that :D is there no end to your guides:D

An excellent idea, now how do we get it out there, would gumtree, preloved, tradeit be prepared to run it for free at the top of their adds. If they did I would think they would want it in a more ammended form as it is taking up valuable advertising space.

I have tried to get the RSPCA and Dogstrust to do something similar but even though they replied to my request it was a generic type letter which didnt address any of the issues.

Oh dear...esp at the part where she mentions "not being interested in money":(
send a shiver down your spine (what did you say to her)? could someone else send her some links for "little dog rescues" where abouts are they?
These people really are blinkered:(

I am a propper "girl guide" clearly:p

Im not sure I was thinking more message it to random individuals, would be good to bebale to have it smack bang at the top of a page or a perminant fixture on every single page someone posts on. But Gumtree and the likes of makes wads of dosh so "do they care"?
