New BP Standard

I’ve delayed buying a new one as I’m not sure if I’m competing next season. But I’ve heard instructors are checking in training. Obviously I always wear one but I’ve never had an instructor check the standard before. Have others experienced this?

Seriously tempted just to ditch XC altogether next year: the costs are just racking up more and more. The need for a new £££ BP feels like the last straw. And the fixture list is totally uninspiring anyway.

I saw reference to the new standard being mandatory for any training taught by a BHS APC in a BHS facebook post a few weeks ago, so maybe word has got round to those who teach under BD/BE/BS coaching quals?

That or insurance companies have got wind of the change and want to ensure the latest approval level is being worn? Certainly food for thought in an ever litigious world...

I'd not heard of it for training but I'm a muppet and for some reason thought the rule came in this year so already have a legal BP - If anyone asks I'm just saying I was being super organised!

I only go to 1 place that actively checks body protectors, need to take hat, protector and passport to secretary. But that's not to say that others don't check, as the tag colours are fairly obvious from the ground for a steward to check. I like arena eventing so I expect it will be compulsory for that so I'll bite the bullet.

I have an old style racesafe and I was fairly underwhelmed when I tried on a new racesafe, didn't feel much different to my current one. Going to try the champion Ti22 next, at least its cheaper.
Any other suggestions for the new standard?

I think some of it will be to do with where they are teaching. If venues have changed their requirements and you're booking through a trainer then they may be signing something as part of their booking that they make sure all using facilities are wearing up to date safety gear

Is the change about 2009 labelled ones not being allowed. I don’t think they are different from the later ones but they haven’t been manufactured since 2018 so it is a useable time span rather than anything else as advice is to replace 3-5 years I think.

Correct - some very minor changes but it’s mostly to guarantee that foam is up to date as much as you can as it does degrade.

I think it's exactly that. Mine is probably 2012 or thereabouts - I have a pony to back in 2024 and will be replacing it anyway, regardless of the 'standard' because it's old and I don't trust the foam.

I have also procrastinated about it but as TREC GB have sorted things with their insurers it looks like I probably WILL be competing next year and so ought to buy one. You know what’s blooming frustrating though? I bought the current one when the LAST standard change happened to comply with that (then pony was lame, then PTS so literally have hardly used it) & then about a year later is when they came up with the new standard.

Probs just gonna get the updated version of the same model in the same size to avoid going to get measured again.

I don't really understand why the labels don't change every year.
That would surely be safer and less expensive for everyone.
To agree new standards and then get manufacturers to test costs a lot of money. Hence why hats and BPs don’t update standards very often.

Our riding club has said it will require the current standard BP even when BP is worn as rider’s choice (in SJ / dressage ).

It’s pretty tedious as been trying on BPs today and I don’t like any of them. The champion is not as light at the racesafe but fits better as longer at the front. The racesafe is slightly too short for my ribs but I don’t like them long at the back

Was this a generic one you tried on? They have a number of fit options online, ie you can have a short back and long front if so desired. Might be worth a look!

Just about to say I think you may be want a "tall" but regular back @LEC with racesafe - they're super fine tunable
I tried the tall medium but not quite covering my ribs. Also I am cheap and trying to find a deal! Been spoilt by my wonderful Dainese. The racing ones are cheaper and look the same standard but I can’t work out the sizing. Too many options…
I only wear mine for xc when I have to so probably gets used 20x a year max.

I have a champion Ti22 which I find ok the only thing about is it's quite short in the back so if I fall off I always hurt my lower back ie pelvis area as there's no coverage. I understand they cannot be too long because of back of saddle but it's annoying x

You mean you can choose not to wear one at all, but if you do wear one is has to be a new one?! That is bonkers.
Our RC currently has it mandatory for any xc training, yes they must be to current standards just like hats and whips.
Currently for training for sj and dressage the choice is down to individual members but if they wear a BP then it must be to current standards. Air jackets may be worn, but over a current BP.

One site they use insists BPs are mandatory for any sj training. All sites used for xc insist on current std BPs and hats.

I get the 'it's mandatory' rules and if it IS mandatory, I get why the current standard must be worn. I just think bringing out a new standard this year is unfortunate timing, coinciding with a cost of living crisis and a severely depleted calendar. I am not the only person I know questioning whether to bother with eventing next season, and the need for a new BP does factor into those decisions. Among many other things.

But I absolutely cannot get my head around the logic of saying 'you don't have to wear one but if you do it can't be your existing one'. Yes foam degrades but mine still looks pretty new and is still clearly offering a significant degree of protection - even if it is not the same level as a brand new one.

I've just emailed BRC for clarification because I don't want to go back to our committee with wrong information, but that would make sense to me that, if worn, they comply to the new standard.

I do find the BRC site annoying, they updated the body protector section recently but have not clarified anything other than that the new standard applies to assessments and "events".

Oh, and Exo Cages (2000 Level 3) are still allowed ...
