remember my post about finding a tampon left on top of my horses new bed? The latest weird happening was my turning up last night to find my bridle and riding boots dumped in the corner of my stable. We have tack lockers which are basically a section of the stable divided of with wooden slats for air circulation and a door in the middle which in my case is padlocked. If the bridle was left on the floor of the stable I would have possibly thought I was being a dope and had left it out overnight. However, my long riding boots are only used for shows and lessons.

The bridle was hung in its zipped up bridle bag on the back wall of the tack locker along with a hunting nose band for shows) and my breastplate. The bridle bag was pushed on top of my feed bin and the bridle and nose band were dumped on the floor in the stable. The breastplate has disappeared. The riding boots were left unzipped on the stable floor on top of my bridle and the boot bag was on some straw in the locker with the top unzipped, the boot jacks were pushed down the other side of the locker.

I checked how some one could get my stuff out as the locker was padlocked and I think some one was reached through the slats pulled my bridle bag of the wall and then pulled the boot bag of its hook and unzipped the top of it and pulled the boots through the slats and pushed the boot jacks back inside the locker afterwards.

Clearly it was not my horse as he couldn't unzip a bag and remove the boot jacks!

All I can think is that some one either:

a. wanted to try my stuff
b. borrowed it to ride their horse/pony with and then dumped it back in my stable minus the breastplate, or
c. was attempting theft and was disturbed.
d. more worryingly it is some one acting out of spite.

I know it must have happened during the day as my horse is turned out by some one I trust 100% and they would have had to stand on my bridle and boots to put my horse magnetic boots away!

MY boots cost over £120 when new but wouldnt fetch much second hand, my bridle was £100+ and its now going to cost me around £50 to get a new leather breastplate. Two weeks ago some stole all my horses first aid kit so I had to fork out £30.

I informed the yard owner who said she had been at the farm all day, no one was up , she was mystified and could only assume we had a ghost!!!

There are a lot of young teenagers on the yard so I am guessing it might be one of them seeing if my type of boots suited them as they dont strike me as light fingered. I know that I am considered 'unusual' as I have nice tack, ride in jodhs and had a new saddle which i got a MSF to adjust to fit twice in one year. So it might be an envy thing (I Hasten to add there are others including some of the younger horse owners who have quite stunning stubben and cliff barnsby tack)

My horse is one of only 2 left in at night now as the rest have been put onto 24/7 summer grazing so I had a sleepless night worrying about what some one might do to him. Its so frustrating I like the yard. like the y/o and y/m and the hacking is amazing but this is quite stressful. I also now have a business car full of smelly horsey gear as darent leave it at the yard!

How awful for you!
And i used to worry about a few scoops of feed being taken! NOthing compared to whats happening to you.
Whether its jelousy, envy or just plain stupidity, no one should be doing this. Everyone works hard to have a horse and pay for nice things for them and to have some one attempt to nick them is bang out of order.
Id be fuming.
Could you not get a little cctv rigged up in the locker? i know its extreme, but if someone is putting dirty tampons in your stable aswell, id seriously want to find out who!

Unfortuantly although in a very rural area we have really very limited choice regarding yards. Where I am and this yard is one of only 2 that allow winter turnout which is the main reason I have stayed. I am really really tempted to move though. Husband is dead against my moving as his view is that all yards have problems and horse is happy. Where are you in Cheshire? I am near Stalybridge and only lived in the area for 2 years so yard recomendations welcome.

I would consider getting a cctv camera, and then you'll be able to catch the person! Or at least stop them.

And whoever has got ypur breastplate is going to want to use it at some point.

How annoying though, I had loads of stuff stolen from me on a livery yard.

I would so move yards... I am not being funny here but I am at a great yard whereby i trust everyone and I should imagine a good percentage of this forum is too.. What I am trying to say is, it doesn't have to be like this!

I would never keep my horse somewhere where odd (and very disturbing things happened!) Why would you? No facilities, convenience to travel or cost would be a greater need then a safe place to keep my horse whereby I trusted the place!

Please move somewhere normal.x

I'm in Mellor near Marple so not far from you. There are plenty of yards if you are prepared to travel a bit. I've just moved to a new yard and my OH was against it as new yard is slightly further away and he had the same opinion (women together = bad). However new yard is fantastic, love it. It's much bigger and very friendly and chilled out. Even if you have to move 5 miles away it's better to be happy than not enjoying your horse. We pay a lot of money to keep horses so you should enjoy it. Maybe go further afield but get part livery i.e., someone else does him in morning to save you time.

A ghost? Really? I think the YO should be taking you a bit more seriously! I'd be REALLY cross if I was brushed aside like that!!

Go back to her and say you want something done. Look into the cctv thing and tell her you're thinking about doing it, but you need her on your side so she's willing to do something about it if you find out who's doing it.

I would expect her to go around and sepak to the other liveries and ask them if they saw anything yesterday and say that she was not pleased someone was stealing and if she found out who it was she would take action. You never know, your breastplate may magically (!!!) reappear and it might put the fear up someone.

Have you called the police. It is theft. If YO not doing anything a vist from the police may make whoever is doing it think again

This is supposed to be a pleasure having horses. Can't see the point in staying at a yard where something quite clearly isn't right. I'd be too worried about what was going to happen next quite honestly and would be out of there like a shot.

Am confused, do you have individual lockers that are lockable?

How odd it seems someone is not hiding what they are doing, I mean if it was a theft atempt surely they would have stuffed them anywhere not in the stable of the person that owns it
Very very odd, Id be pushing the YO, is it not happening to anyone else? possibly regisiter an atempted theft with the police?

yes we all have individual lockable lockers. Mine was padlocked shut but the locker consists of wood slats not solid walls other than the back wall it is attached to. I am also very confused as I don't understand why one item is missing and the more valuable stuff isnt! There has been a lot of small items going walkabout in the last month or too, not just mine unfortuantly.

I would move!!! It would make me very nervous that one night something worse could happen, or your horse might be in danger in the future. But if you can't then definitely get cctv, or camp out at the yard one night! Really I think your yard owner should be the one to get the cctv, as other liveries things have been going missing...unless she is the culprit ah hah! :)

Do you really need the slats for ventilation? You could get some thin wood panels or metal sheet or something, put them inside your locker (or outside) so that the slats are covered up and no one can get their hands in!

I agree a police visit (that's what the community support officers we pay for are for) will be a good shake up. Go to the station and explain the problem, and either get a crime number and ask them to visit. That may well put a stop to it, while in the meantime, hate to say it, but I also agree you have to move yards.

Horses should be a true pleasure to have, and since I changed from a dodgy yard, I haven't looked back. Good luck, sm xx

I wouldn't move personally as I would be turning detective to find out what the hell is happening to the stuff! Put up CCTV, get the police involved and even finger print things! As for your breast plate - insist on searching everyones elses locker and make sure you mean business! YO needs to pull her socks up too.

I'd go to the police, there has been one theft from your locker and the rest of the activity is potentially harrassment. The police will help you with this and may be able to put the frighteners on the culprit or even catch them.

In the meantime remove anything that you don't actually need on the yard or that is high value (show stuff etc) what is left make sure it is security marked (the police can help you with this).

Increase the security in your tack locker by covering the vents too.

Give your yard owner formal written notice that if she doesn't take steps to address the issue of theft and harrassment that you will have no option but to consider the contract you have breached and start to look elsewhere. Point out that you don't want to move and that you have been very happy there but the things that are happening are unacceptable.

DO NOT KEEP TOLERATING THIS

It sounds like quite nasty behaviour, and I don't think it is about nicking your stuff, it sounds much like a campaign of intimidation - that is why it is obvious and stuff isn't being hidden.

Sounds bloming horrible!
I agree with everyone else really - ramp up your security - hand holes are gone - But make the YO get her arse in gear too (A Ghost!!! Honestly!) - with 'several' things going missing - and your 1st aid kit too. THis needs further action on her part!
Ask the YO to have a little locker inspection and see what she says!

Now THAT is a cracking idea! Don't let her tell people in advance, just do it as they arrive at the yard.

Is there any way you can block up the holes in your locker? like nail some cheap plywood on the inside or something?

I would publicise it loudly around the yard too. Might make "mr nobody" think twice at any rate.

You're very tolerant - I moved yards after a broom, pot of salt and a few haynets got taken! (Bitchiness rather than outright theft, horrible atmosphere.)

I would be fuming at the YO's response - £50 and the hassle of buying a new breastplate, plus the stress of finding your stuff like that, is not a joking matter. When she asks for your next rent cheque say you left it for her but the ghost must have taken it ;)

I think possibly someone on your yard probably been borrowing your bridle/boots when you weren't around but the breastplace and first aid kit disppearing is theft so I think you would be in your rights to notify the police if YO not going to take it seriously. I just can't get over people's behaviour though to think what's yours is mine in this way. And to go to the lengths they had to get your stuff out which won't have been easy for them. I feel for you as it really can mar how you feel about being at the yard and even tougher that if it wasn't for this you wouldn't choose to move. Luckily we have only had minor silly things like this happen at our yard but even then it makes my blood boil when there's been people rummaging through or borrowing someone else's stuff.

Having discussed this with my other half we have decided that I will stay where I am for now and I am boarding up the tack room with the boards on the inside so they cant be pulled off and I can still store my gear there. Whilst pony lives out I will also padlock the stable up. To be far to the y/o I think she was as perplexed as me and the y/m was very suprised when my husband spoke to her.I doubt either would be the cuplrit as aside from trusting them anyway y/o's horse is 16.3 and growing and my tack fits a 14.3HH pony and y/m has a tiny pony and a retired pony....

Maybe you could try a webcam into a notepad, small and discreet enough to slot into your tack locker or angle into the top corner of your stable. If there is something fishy going on you'll soon find out, plus you'll have the evidence to confront the YO and the gulity party

Agree with boarding up your locker (although I think I would have moved too!), is there anyway you can simply annoy the person doing it. I have used fly papers (very uncomfortable to get out of your hair if you walk into them) and anti climb / vandal paint, although if you board up the gaps, you won't need to use this.

It may not help, but I would make life as difficult for them as they are for me!!!! Revenge is sweet, even if you only know but the hairs left on your fly papers he he!!!!!!

Seriously though, I would have lost my marbles by now. Keep smiling, let us know how it goes

xxxx

Remove your tack from locker and replace with dog poo! It might smell a bit, but would give the offender their just deserts after the tampon incident!
Or how about several live rats? But make sure you have the cctv set up so you can post on YouTube for all to see the results!:D

(Only joking here, but my mind goes into overdrive when thinking of sweet revenge!).

Well now I am seriously thinking of moving asap. Went to yard this evening to find out that a person working there has supposely been inteviewed and cautioned by the police for offering threats of violence over the internet to a livery on the yard....

Surely they've been sacked? Your YO doesn't sound like she takes what goes on in her yard very seriously...

Its all very wierd, person who was threatended was previously asked to leave due to aledged level of s** stirring she was doing and constant demands to change stables etc to the point y/o's o/h wanted her off. This was after she had a stand up screaming match with another livery. She is now coming back on the yard and no doubt will be back to what she was doing before, plus is a vector for all the teenagers on the yard. Of course I have no idea who set all this of as I am not often on the yard at the same time as everyone else (they all seem to be able to be there all day during the week...)

Husbands reaction when I told him was 'move immeadiatly it will become hell there'

Person who made the threats has apparantly been told shut up or go. I was quite shocked as I know them and had assumed that when they talked about 'sorting people out on line' it was the normal level of moaning. For the police to tkae it seriously it must have been quite extreme i would think.

I havent found my breastplate so can only conclude it has been stolen.

Pony apparantly was manic to go out yesterday morning and he is normally quiet in the stable so I am now worried what some one might have been up to. Probaly nothing but I feel really unsettled now and looking to move.
