I did share this yesterday in NL but decided to pop it here too!

I lost my previous horse a few weeks back and decided finding another right away was a good idea (what with competing and sponsors ect)

I got this chap, 16.1 Oldenburg. 5 year old. He was very green but hes coming on. Been doing lots of schooling and grids and yesterday I decided to see what he does over a bigger fence. Jumped up to 1.30 and he was brill!

Jumping BN and disco out and about with 2 BN double clears, and 3 90cm DC including 90cm am 2nd round qualifier. So very pleased!

I am hoping he might be a 1.20 horse. What do you lot think?

My aim to produce him and (maybe) sell him to fund a 1.30 horse!

I think he looks bigger than 16.1 but not had the stick out yet! He has a massive canter had to do grids to get him to shorten as he was making too much ground in BS distances.

Hoping to get his fox DC's when hes ready and go from there. Being fairly show with him as want the disco at Blue Chip (poss novice if hes in it still as might aswell!)

He likes bigger fences better though!

Thanks, he is quite calm. I can ride the same to that is 1m.

Downside is hes a ****** for throwing his head up before a fence no matter how soft I am with my hands. Hence the new fluff!

On a side note (I think I can but need to be sure) can I compete with two nosebands?
A grackle with a normal one with the fluff ontop? Obvs the fluff wont go on the grackle but he needs a grackle!

I thought he looked bigger than that too :eek:, maybe it's because I'm a midget and anything bigger than Topaz looks enormous (she's only 15.2hh :D).

Can't comment on how far he will go as I'm only jumping 80-90cm comp wise :o, but as I said yesterday he looks lovely and jumps beautifully!

Thinking of trying the nose-fluff myself on the black beast, so will be interested in how he improves with it? Regards the grackle I'm thinking of making my own fluff with some spare sheepskin and attaching it either side of the top loop if you get my drift, saw a pony with something similar (won something eventing I think?). So it would be two bits of fluff either side of the central part, arg don't think I'm explaining myself well here lol.

I get you! I was going to try that! Might give it a go this was just a quick fix :D


Give it a try, it seems to work quite well.
 
I like him he reminds me of my boy, effortless!

Jumped mine up to 1.50 at home and still can't get him to try :D I lose my bottle after that LOL

I think with youngsters its always "you never know" I think the best way to predict is by how he progresses at shows, how moving up a level affects him if it does or not

He has plenty more in the tank I reckon though....
 
It all looks very easy for him - no idea how high he'll go but potential to burn by the looks of it here!

i think it would be interesting to see how he jumped if you squared the front bar and pulled it a bit wider, ie does he snap his forearm up and then kick away behind, or does he have to twist a bit to get the height AND the width. Not that im suggesting scaring him by flinging him at a square 1.30 oxer NOW, just that i think you will know a bit more when he's at that stage :)

Yeah I was going to do that but decided to keep it quite simple. Yeah thats him in my sig! His back end is much better than his front but it is getting there!

Yep I agree with this, if you don't want to scare him make the fence a little lower but wider and square and increase the width gradually. The fences are probably wider than they are high these days!

Looks promising so far though!
 
Interested in the fluff....how does that help with the head being chucked up? Lovely horse as well, no wonder you are exited about him!

If they throw their heads up, they can't see where they're going... Which is great unless you've got a plank like Reg who then put his head higher and looked out of alternate eyes by twisting his head about.
 
Right I might the fluff on my boy then. Been playing around with bits and think it is a training issue in his case but fluff might help!

Give it a go you never know! Ive been playing with bits but hes very fluffy. He doesnt throw his head all the time, but it has cost us a couple fences in the ring so decided to try and sort it out :)
 
Couldn't watch the vid yesterday but just saw it now and thought I'd better comment in the spirit of un-cliquiness :D

Lovely, willing sort :) Hard to tell his scope as he just does what he needs to to clear what is in front of him, he's not the sort you go ""Oh, wow!" at, but he seems to be coping very easily with what you've asked and is enjoying himself :) One thing to watch is that you ride a really good turn before the fence, don't let him over bend his neck and fall out through the turn as then when he gets to the fence he isn't balanced over all four legs and isn't in the best position to throw a big jump - that happened at least once in the video. Sorry - hope you don't mind me saying :D

When we want to test scope at his sort of stage, we tend to build a grid, and put an oxer at the end, and just make it bigger and bigger and wider and wider - that way you can put a really big fence up without frightening them...
