I have finally taken the plunge and made an offer on 16.3 ISH for eventing subject to vetting. I’ve shared for many years but this is my first horse!

She will be on full livery at a yard within 30 mins of me (going to look at some later this week), and comes with no tack/rugs/etc.

I need to start making a list of things that I need, and also currently looking at different bridles - there’s so much choice.

If she passes the vetting I’ll be getting a saddle fitter booked to come out to fit a saddle ASAP.

Welcome any tips, tricks etc!

Good luck with the vetting. If she's via dealer, then disregard this as they'd just be guessing. But, if possible, find out what she's ridden in now, what rugs she's used to, what feed she has and when etc, what's her shoeing/trimming cycle. The more you can match her existing routine and equipment the easier they tend to settle. She's obviously nice to ride now hence trying to replicate the tack, then you can tweak things over time to suit you :)

Do your research re saddle fitters. Some only stock a very limited range of mostly the same types. They will try and fit one of these if they can even if it is not always the best fit.

Thanks everyone for your kind comments - finally starting to get excited!

The vetting is booked for late next week - if all goes well I will most definitely upload photos.

She’s from a private seller, so I’ve already asked her size etc, and will replicate the same bit she has in now to start with, as she seemed to go well in it when I tried her. I’ll also get the same feed etc in so there isn’t much of a change.

I’ve met with a saddle fitter through my current share horse, so likely will use them if they have availability, as I was impressed by the fitter, and they do have good reviews. They also stock multiple brands and second hands.

In terms of a bridle, I think I’ll get a fairly simple cavesson (what she’s in now) to start with, and then contact a bridle/bit fitter to come out.

Black or brown tack for a dark bay?!

I have both for Orbi, 🤣 not intentional actually…

But Id say brown is nicer 😄

Going to looking at Agria when I buy one as I saw an advert on the TV the other day and was impressed with the fact they insure for the entire duration of your horses life, inc £10k of vets bills and year and the premiums don't go up after you've claimed.

NFU wouldn’t even give me a quote for our new horse because we’d made a claim with a different company for a different horse after a field accident. How that made the new horse uninsurable according to NFU is baffling to me 🤷‍♀️

I was with Animal Friends but the price doubled this year so just changed to Agria.

Agria are a bit different as you have to pay 25% off the vets bill but their premiums are much lower and there’s the lifetime thing.

I’ve also used Pet Plan in the past who have been brilliant in paying out.

I’m also with NFU. First horse I’ve insured and I’ve found them really helpful and easy to work with.

Oh and congratulations on your new horse 😍

£250 a month seems high, is she very expensive & does that include loss of use or high risk activity?
When I have insured its been with nfu & they have been brilliant, including over the years 2 loss of horse claims.
