So new puppy came hom yesterday. He is adorable and my current dog seems made up with him.

So yesterday he was great had him in garden and praised each time he piddled outside and even got him to poo outside too.

I have a large cage and put him that overnight and he howled the house down. I decided to take the approach of ignoring him but after and hour I got worried so I put my dog in with him. My dog growled and barked at him and they both settled to sleep

My dog then wakes at 0230 wondering why he is in the cage so I let him out, cue puppy howling again. I went off to bed and within half an hour it stopped and he slept through till 0530

So this morning he goes out and has a piddle comes in and has his breakfast out for a piddle and poo again then a few games and some sleep.

Since then he has piddled 5 times and poo'd once in the house but I am struggling to catch him in action in order to be able to put him outside, I know its early days but am I going to end up struggling to house train him if I can't catch him in action?

It is a bit of a problem if you can't catch him as that is the easiest way for him to learn, that and copying your older dog. But I wouldn't worry too much as it will take a while to get into a routine as long as you always take him out after eating and as soon as they wake up from a puppy nap then the amount of praising you do outside for getting it right, should outweigh the fact he is ignored if he does it inside, coupled with the few times you do catch him inside and get him outside quick and it shouldn't be too long before he is asking to go outside

I wouldn't put your other dog in the cage with him at night, give him a few nights and he should settle and then you have a cage that is the puppy's place, otherwise you might find he'll only settle in the cage if his friend is with him.
Good luck with your pup

I too have a new puppy (2 weeks she's been with us), 10 weeks old now.

I got the puppy crate out for her to sleep in at night, similar to you, ignored the cries for so long & then gave in (cardinal sin)
grin.gif

I now leave one of my dogs in the kitchen with her but I WOULD NOT lock both dogs in the crate, there is no escape for either of them should something happen.

My pup sleeps with older dog on another bed in the kitchen, the crate is also in the kitchen with the door secured open so either of them can go in & come out as they please. I'm not overly bothered about pee & poo on kitchen floor during the night as its' easily cleaned up but the minute pup has been asleep during day she is put outside to do her business.

I put pup in the crate when she won't settle down, ie, too much rough & tumble with other dogs, she has to learn enough is enough for herself & the other 2. I also feed her in there so the other 2 get peace to eat their dinner.

Pup doesn't cry at night at all, she has the other dog for company which I think is all they're missing when they are that young and I think once all is quiet & calm & the lights are off, they seem to know it's bedtime & settle down for the night.

Is your garden secure, would it possible for you to just leave your back door open when you're there? That's what I tend to do & pup just seems to know to go out there to do her business, but then she does have the other 2 dogs to learn from. They get clean soon enough, don't worry so much

the accidents are normal!!! sounds like your doing the right thing

every half an hour take him outside! not easy if your busy, but allows you to give him the opportuntiy to do it!

That got me and my puppy sorted relatively quickly!

I am extremely jealous!! I want another puppy (and thanks to GinaB, a black lab just like yours!!)

As Lucy has said, just keep taking him outside at regular intervals, make sure everytime he wakes up/has a drink/has something to eat/etc it is straight outside.
If you just keep putting him outside, eventually he'll get the idea.

Good luck and I want lots of Pics to feed my puppy habit!

I am sure it is against T&Cs to include "new puppy" in a title thread and then not include pics

The key to house training is restriction, restrict his access to any part of the house unless you are in the room, this is the only way you can break the passing of a motion, o quickly scoop baby up and place outside in destignated pooh area

If u are pottering around and cannot keep an eye on puppy either crate or baby gate the kitchen and leave back door open if outside is safe enough when unsupervised,.

Crate should be as small as u can get away with at this stage, a smaller space gives the feeling of more security, also try covering crate to black out the light that the early morning brings

, and place a teddy bear sibling of equal size to puppy, minus any chewable parts(eyes/nose, this gives the puppy something to cuddle into, and means u don't have to place your adult dog in, which could end up in the puppy getting bitten if it becomes a nuissance to your dog i.e.

Tire puppy out befor placing in crate, and carry directly to garden when ever it is released from crate, this is the basis of your routine, once a routine is established, the puppy can have free reign.

Cheers for the advice everyone. Pictures are on the way..............

CALA will put your advice into practice have been doing similar anyway. Thanks for the tip. I don't have a crate at the moment just a pen (think childs play pen size) he has his bed in there and a cuddly toy.

No poops in the house since early morning and only 1 / 2 wee's
grin.gif
. Had him in the pen for a bit this avo and he howled for almost 45 mins then settled and slept. I am hoping tonight will be better still as I am shattered already. Thankfully I am now off work for 2 weeks

Now one more question, our back garden is now 100% secure but there are 3 steps out from the back door. Is puppy ok to go up and down these at his leisure or should I carry him in and out?
