So, my new £1650 saddle is due to be delivered, eventually, from the manufacturers, to the saddler I ordered it from, in another 2 -3 weeks. But they won*t be able to fit it til February. So "I can just ride in it until then to see if it fits".

Err, I'm not a saddler, thats why I've not got a cheap saddle off ebay - I want someone who knows what they're doing to check it fits!

Would you be happy doing this?

Absolutely no way would I be happy - and I wouldn't pay for the saddle until they brought it out AND fitted it, adjusting if necessary as I wouldn't want to give my horse a bad back in the meantime. I can't believe that they can't fit it before February and perhaps refusing to pay for it till they do fit it will focus their minds!

I'd tell tham that if they can't fit it within X amount of time you will be going elsewere for the saddle, bet they will soon change their tune!

Ah, I had this problem when I was going to order £1200 of new saddle. 6 - 8 weeks for delivery and only then would they book a fitting for it - another 6 - 8 weeks wait.

I bought the same saddle used a very few times from ebay and paid less than half the price and got my fitting pretty much as soon as it had been delivered. I felt far happier!

Ive had 2 made to measure saddles, the first was almost right, just needed tweaking, the 2nd was an on going nightmare. The saddler thankfully was fantastic and 10 mths later, lots of further adjustments, an alternative saddle and Im sat here with no saddle but a refund which I am really grateful of as I have heard so many horror stories.
If it was me, I would not part with a penny until the saddle is fit. Feb is a long way off and your horse could change shape before then. If you do take the saddle then I still wouldnt pay for it until you know for sure it fits. I would be inclined to go elsewhere and start again Im afraid even if it takes til feb til you get it made. 3 mths from now is pretty bad to wait for a fitting on what I presume is a made to measure saddle.

Will they pay for it putting your horses back out and any injuries incurred from flying over said beast's head when it pinches? It's not like you are paying peanuts, I'd expect more in customer service when spending that kind of money :)

Did they not think when they ordered it for you that you might like it fitted when it arrived?! Surely it wouldn't have been too hard for them to keep that in mind. No I wouldn't be doing what they suggest and I wouldn't be hugely happy about the service on offer either really.

I wouldn't be happy at all.

When I ordered my made to measure, once my saddler had an estimated delivery date from the manufacturer, he booked me in ready.

My current saddle slips right round, despite seeming to fit. I told the saddler this. I don't want to find out the new one doesn't fit by falling on top of my head! I'm really bad at knowing whether saddles fit well or not, my horse is jumping 1.25s, and I didn't order a new made to measure saddle not to be fitted by someone who knows what they are doing! It may well need small adjustements - what am I meant to do til February - put my horse off jumping if the saddle isn't comfortable for him? Or use it as a bloody table decoration?

I also want to buy a second hand dressage saddle from them, a new girth and new stirrup leathers and irons. Plus get my new horse fitted for the same type of new saddle, if its any good. How on earth are you meant to give these people business if they cannot be bothered to fit a saddle until February??

And if it doesn't fit, or has problems, you can bet that if I did ride in it, I would be deemed to have accepted it and have problems returning it if it didn't fit.

Aargh!

Tell them to take a hike! Youo are paying big money for the saddle and should be able to get a fitting within a day or so of the saddle arriving.

If it doesn't matter who is to come out and fit the saddle then try this link and see if you can organise someone else.

To be honest if they can't follow through then go elsewhere.
