I went for tack room, corner hay barn with rear double doors so I could get a couple of large bales in there, but with stable door at front in case needed to use it as a stable, 28x12 field shelter and end overhang. Tried to make it as multi purpose as possible to cover all eventualities.

Update time!

Had to literally go back to the drawing board as I forgot to factor in the thickness of the walls, this takes 8" off the width of the stable on each side which does make things a bit smaller.

Wanted to thank you all for you inputs and advice, it's so nice to have this forum to turn to to get a wealth of knowledge!

I have added the updated plan, I do want 4 stables as I currently have 2 horses, 1 in foal so I will need 3 at some stage and it is always handy to have a spare stable. This means the tack room is now 9.5ftx10ft. Do you think this size is manageable? I will be using the back right stable as additional storage for now and I have purchased those rugs racks used for drying rugs so I will probably have them along the left wall.

A few points I wanted to make instead of answering everyone individually-

- All stable partitions have sliding doors so the angle the doors are opening at on the drawing is purely for information purposes for myself and the builder
- The "wash bay" will be the wash/tack up area/farrier area and is more than likely just going to be 2 steel crosstie poles bolted somewhere, I just wanted to give a dedicated space but don't want to build it with enclosed walls just incase I ever needed space for storage
- Due to the size of the shed being that bit smaller I don't know if I can fit an external door down near the back, do I put one in the back right stable as for now that will be an additional storage room that will probably be used for the odd hay bale as I bring them in and shavings storage and would be helpful to have a door? Or will it be a nuisance if that stable ever becomes an actual stable?
- Muck heap probably wont be covered and will be in the far part of the yard. I don't have any old trailer here to use for a muck heap and looking at prices online are over €2000 so I don't know if that will be a possibility. Just wondering, do muck heaps need to be on concrete bases? Most yards I have been on had them this way but just wondering if it is actually necessary?

I have added some progress pics. Not very exciting at the minute but on Monday they get started on the steel frame and walls so I can't wait for that! Just to give an idea of the yard, the hill to the right will be dug out and the will become part of the yard area for bale storage and I will fence 4x paddocks that are all about 0.5 - 0.7 acres for turnout beside the stables with an additional 3 acres out the front for longer turn out, I think this will work ok?

*ETA the right corner stable will just have a stable door that is left hand hanging and will open out towards the shed*

OP, your corner stable, if it has a sliding door, does that slide inside the stable? I think you’ll find it difficult if so, as your door will get full of bedding/hay etc (speaking from experience of seeing an inside sliding door).

Im sorry but I can’t help thinking that the corner stable looks squashed in. I’d be tempted to move the tack room next to the wash bay, make the end stables more even in size and then you’ll have storage at both the bottom sides of the plan?

I've edited my last post, the corner stable will just have a hanging door, no sliding as it wont fit. I don't think I can build anything on the left hand side incase I need to come in with a tractor or back in the horse box as it will just make it all a bit tight.

Ah ok, in that case is it worth moving the tack room door? If the corner stable door is open, you’re exiting your tack room into a door? It’s so hard getting your layout organised, I’ve been there and you always need more space than you have 🤪
