Afternoon all would like to say hello and introduce myself and my 1 yr 2 month old Beagle Daisy.

Would like to jump in with a couple of questions if I may,

Abit of background:

I have had my Beagle since 8 months we took her in after she was being bullied by her mother and copying her mothers bad behaviour. She has been a brillient dog. I must point out that I spent over a year wanting a Beagle and did the research, I knew it wouldn't be a walk in the park. (no pun intended) She is very well behaved and the behaviours she was crated for have never materialised in out home. Because of this we decided to get rid of the crate. She has amazing recall for a Beagle I wont say comes everytime as she does get distracted but only by other puppy's!. She has learnt very quickly commands that we have wanted to teach her and gets on well with one of my cats. She is very good around my chickkens and yes I have trusted her a few minutes alone with them. (looking through the window I may add)
I also have a 4, 5 and 9 year old to add to the mix.

Right sorry about that my questions are,
She has not come into season yet and shows no signs of it either. We have taken her to the vet and are going to spay her but thought we would wait her first season then do it. How much longer do you think it will take and would you spay now? I'm absolutly dreading the rest period after as she is so active so keep putting it of.

My other question is she has started in the last few weeks to wee each night by the front door. She has plenty of excercise and I have started taking her out for an extra late night walk where she will wee but still dos the wee at home. My husband even got up at 4am to let her out and she still did it in the house same place.

Last question, she is a true Beagle and loves to chase down feathery things not too intrested in squirrles and rabbits. I was wondering if it would be okay to cultivate this and teach her to hunt. Someone else I mentioned this too said it would be dangerous to encourage her?

Sorry it's so long many thanks.

Hello and welcome to AAD!

Firstly she may come into season anytime now, or she could have silent seasons. Your vet should be able to tell you if he thinks its imminent.
The rest period isnt that bad, its only until the stitches are out then they are good to go!

The weeing thing I would have your vet check for a UTI, take a sample along and they will
test it for you.

Hi, thanks Foxyfilly for that info. I am going to pop her along to the vet's and see what they say. Any advice on the hunting bit would still be appreciated.

I didn't wait for my dog to have her first season before having her speyed, there are differing views on what you should do, but your vet can advise best on that.

In relation to the weeing by the front door, what does she do if you restrict access to the door, i.e. shutting her in the kitchen, will she still wee but in a different place? It may be that she can still smell the area where she wee'd and is trying to scent it again, you might want to try a quite strong disinfectant on the original area to really try to de-smell it. A good disinfectant I used to use was Zoflora. I think there is a really good selection these days that will do the trick.

Sorry, no ideas about hunting!

Hi thanks Roody2,

someone said that Baking soda is good for getting rid of smells. She has the run of the whole house except kids bedrooms so I never thought to keep her locked in somewhere. I'm going to try the baking powder tonight and see if it helps. Not sure if I can bear the crying if I lock her in the kitchen...... I have polished floor boards so i'm guessing the wee may have gone through so it might still smell there? I am going to wait before I call the vets as she seems absolutly fine and has no extra or problem wee's, at the moment all seems to be normal. Will see how this week goes.

Welcome to the forum! Any photos of the lovely lady?

Re spaying I would get it done now, no need to wait for and go through the hassle of the first period.

Re the weeing, sounds like a habit she has gotten into. Sometimes it's really difficult to eliminate the smell of wee from floors so it's always worth giving them another scrub. Personally I find crate training helps enormously with toilet training and would be tempted to keep her in her crate overnight to avoid little accidents.

Not sure about training her for retreaving as I have no experience but I can't imagine that would encourage her to kill things as it's not the same activity.

I'm not really an expert but as a beagle-owner I have one that can go off the lead and one that can't (fear aggression/recall issues). The one that can go off isn't encouraged or discouraged from hunting as long as I know that I can get her back I don't see it as an issue. By that I mean that she will come if I think she is going too far away from me if she is on the trail of something not that I actually go hunting with her. She will chase or follow the trail of all kinds of wildlife, including birds (ducks, geese, etc.). I do have to watch her like a hawk though as she will be gone (and has a couple of times) if I miss the opportunity to call her at the right time. I like to see her working a scent though and let the beagle on the lead do it too (he just can't really follow it very far unless we are in a field and I run with him) because that's what they were bred for and their enjoyment of it is very obvious.

As I said though, I am not a hunter. Where you thinking of training her just to flush or to retrieve too? Mine have never shown any desire to retrieve anything (including tennis balls) but I know beagles that do.

I agree with Booboos though - we need pictures. It is almost mandatory for new posters :D

Thanks for your replies.

She is amazing off the lead and does come back. The only trouble I have had is with another puppy she just wanted to play and the other pup would not go back to it's owner so was a while before I could catch her!

She does play ball and will bring it back so ideally I would like her to bring her hunt back. I am interested as we took her to some fields and she found a pheasent and was off like a shot after it. We let her chase it and just kept her in sight but she lost it. We have been practising with a tennis ball (its her favourite thing) we show her it and let her sniff then hide it and then she will find it for us. She is very good at it even in difficult hiding places. I wonder about the retrival though as she sometimes has a hop after our chooks but is not really intrested. I just thought Pheasent supper would be nice.............lol.

I would love to post pictures as she is stunning (I'm biased I know) but I really cannot figure out how to put them on?

Thanks for the warm welcome x

I would start a new thread asking for tips to teach dogs to retrieve - there are many fantastic trainers on here and they can help you try it out with a dummy to see if she shows any interest. I've also got no idea of what you can and can't do with beagles or dogs in general as far as hunting wildlife is concerned, etc. I'd be sure to check on that too just in case there are some limitations you should know about (if you don't know already) :).
