Feeling glum, there was nothing to go to in August when the weather was good, yet now there’s a weekend of fun on our doorstep it’s too hot!! So I think I will find somewhere fun for arena hire or go to the beach instead.

Anyone braving the weather or crying off like us?

I have entries in for something I’ve actually been practising which is unusual for me as normally just rock up. If temps as high as they say may not go but there is something else we can do Sunday when it doesn’t look quite so hot. We’ve not had much hot weather but what we have had has coincided with entered events. Mind you we’ve got soaked three times this summer as well but I think horse and I both better with that than the heat.

Just looked and is hot Sunday but we’d be done early so an option.

I have an hours drive to a breed show.
Will now only be doing 2 or 3 morning classes and heading home by midday.
That way it might be hot (but still as hot as driving late afternoon) but ought to miss the worst of the traffic....

Both shows we wanted to do are late starts, so would be competing around midday on the Saturday and 1-2pm on the Sunday. If it was a 9am class would have gone for it.

I'm not too concerned until the temps go above 30. We're at a champ show on Saturday which is a 3 hour drive and unfortunately have a morning and afternoon class. I've ordered two portable fans for the lorry (thanks to recommendations on here) so that he hopefully wont get too hot standing on the lorry but I make sure I always ride in all weathers including heat so that I know he can cope with it. I've also got a cool rug and will take plenty of water for him too. Generally he copes in the heat better than I do so I'm not too worried.

She'd be fine with the heat, if it weren't for her winter coat coming through! We're planning to pop down to the local show on Sunday, so I'm trying to decide whether to whip everything off tomorrow, in the hope it won't look too terrible by Sunday, or just accept we're going to be a bit sweaty and woolly. (We won't even mention me in tweed!)

Forecast seems to keep changing here as when I looked at lunchtime there was some rain forecast but that seems to have gone again. Looks to be 28-29ish where we’re going. Entered in a TREC comp & still planning on going as did a few back in June in similar temps and pony coped ok and we’ve been riding in fairly warm weather for the last few weeks on & off for 2 or 3 hours at a time. (He’s not as good in the heat as the Welsh was but he does sweat less as he puts a lot less effort in!) Am debating bib clipping him as he’s just thinking about growing a winter coat will likely make a decision Thurs / Fri on that as not ideal clipping whilst moulting but also want to keep him comfy.

Will likely just take it steady and be sensible.

Personally wouldn’t say it’s too hot for horses and people that are fit enough with no underlying conditions etc.

I’ll be carrying on as normal. We’ve endless months of rain and cold to look forward to after this!
Agree that it is very much individual situations as not as hot as it was last year and they have had a week to aclimatise. I don't think my horse or I do the heat particularly well so probably more cautious and don't go out when plenty of others do quite happily. Would have been different with previous horse who coped well - think being grey helped, the sun just bounced off him.

competing sunday (no idea of times yet but guessing between 11 and 1 as in both elems).....pony is fit and not affected by the heat so will carry on as usual.

1hr drive, mix of B roads and dual carrigeway but have multiple routes we could go if we hit traffic.

fans in lorry, and lots of wash off water.

I completely agree 🙂

For me tho, summer has been a bit of a shyte show, actually the last 11 months has, so B and I are not fit, or at least not anywhere as fit as usual. Now am 6 weeks post this 3rd op, I can start increasing riding time.

That said, roll on the more cool or blooming cold days, yippee to renewing my acquaintance with my Grasmeres, polar gloves, plus the wet weather gear too 😊😊😊

TFF, all yr round rider but prefers temps lower than higher 😊

BD Saturday. Won't know times until tomorrow evening, but think it'll be early pm :( It's M25 so will check traffic but should be a straight 40 min run IF the bleddy m25 plays ball. Lorry is big and very well ventilated and only one test each. Will load them up soaking wet on way home so they'll be cool.

I hate the high heat but both horses ok in it.

ugh... 5 hour journey to Norfolk to go and run around an intermediate in 30 degree heat is not particularly appealing to me, but I do need the run and I've always continued to work him in the heat. I'm hoping to still run, but will not be gunning it around the xc that's for certain.

Does anyone have any experience with water cooled rugs for traveling in hot temperatures? I have a fan but it doesn't do much and my horse is an extremely sweaty traveller (not sure if heat or stress, as travels quietly and looks engaged not shut down etc). I saw a post on FB about them but the rugs I've seen are all mega bucks, so been wondering if you could soak any old mesh cooler? Can't seem to find any info!

Having bought my new lorry last November, I'm finally going to use the horse-area fan! We missed the June heatwave due to lameness. We've got lessons and an overnight at my dressage trainer's which will mean travelling in the middle of the day but the lorry's well ventilated, Chilli's a good traveller and if it looks very warm I'll hose him off before loading.

It was 32C in the flat today and even with a powerful fan it was very uncomfortable.

It is the humidity that it makes hard. I would not be able to ride in this heat and I have a choice. A horse cannot make it's own choice about whether to compete or not.

I don't think it is kind to compete horses in these temperatures. But I appreciate for some competitions are very important and the horse has a job to do and I am someone who really struggles with the heat whereas some people just love it so and cope really well so maybe as I struggle so much in the heat I am more sympathetic towards horses.

That is near where I keep Bert it is absolutely roasting hot here still at 7pm.

Yard staff have been sponging horses down and I am on my way to Bert and will give him a second sponge down. I certainly won't ride him. Just bonding time.

Windsor 2 day fun ride has cancelled on humane grounds.

I need to go to the Sunday show as am course building, but may well go in the car rather than taking B for even 1 class.

It's not humid at all though; it's not been more than 50% in the 30°+ hours.

Stangs, I've no idea where you are but it's been v humid where I am today and yesterday. Tomorrow and Saturday are forecasted similar too.
This morning was 87% humidity. That was recorded at the airfield boundary under 2 miles from my yard.
