Where I live it is humidity 70% it going up to humidity 83% overnight and still 32C now.

In Norfolk the humidity is going up to 96% on Saturday.
My bad, I thought you were in London too? It's only 27 right now for me.

I've been up to Cambs today, and also not humid there; the morning was a bit sticky but dry by the time it got hot.

I am on the outskirts of London it always seem a lot hotter here than in central London. I was central London yesterday it was actually cooler than where I am.

I am going to Norfolk on Saturday to pet sit for my sister and her husband for a week as my mum is hospital and they need to go and help support her and look after my Dad hence looking at what is going on here.

Does anyone have any experience with water cooled rugs for traveling in hot temperatures? I have a fan but it doesn't do much and my horse is an extremely sweaty traveller (not sure if heat or stress, as travels quietly and looks engaged not shut down etc). I saw a post on FB about them but the rugs I've seen are all mega bucks, so been wondering if you could soak any old mesh cooler? Can't seem to find any info!

I soak a lemieux air tech mesh rug in bucket of water and travel in that works pretty well. Equally if break down can soak it repeatedly.

Hunter trial on Sunday - it's lookig at about 24 degC and only about a 20 min drive. Pony is not at all bothered by heat so will continue as normal (I might suffer though!)

I was going to book a fun ride for Sunday which starts at 9.30. It is 20 or so miles away with no traffic problems.
The going is mainly estate grass with no road and very few tracks. I usually like to canter where it’s possible and might pop a few teeny weeny jumps.

from 9am to noon the weather forecast is
humidity from 82% dropping to 65%
temperature is 21 rising to 25 but feels like 25-30
storms predicted from 4pm but I would be home by then.

I’m not expert enough to know if this is too hot.

I’ve hit my competition on the head. Was expensive fees but heat and I’ve twisted my ankle so decision made. We are at 30 feels like 35 and showing so standing in the ring. Good luck all who are out and enjoy a lazy day in the sunshine if not.

I'd do that with a lot of water on board to wash down. It's Saturday that's supposed to be really humid

Quoting my own post.

I found a guide which suggests that if temperature plus humidity in Fahrenheit is >150 then it could be dangerous for horses.

Where I would be going it is forecast to be average 82 +73. It doesn’t mention travelling.
As neither I nor F are young unless the forecast changes drastically I’m not risking it.

We booked arena hire this morning for 7.30am. Even then my mare sweated up! I have noticed one local show move the date and another start super early. So venues are trying to reduce the impact of the weather.

I rode first thing yesterday and today. This morning was horrible the humidity was so high. They were all in the shelter when I left. Flies are bad too.

I think a lot has been cancelled around here

If I ask myself the question 'Would I want to run around in this heat?' and the answer is no, then I don't ride. Really don't think it's fair to carry on as some people do in 25+.

25-35 is not a freakishly high temp for U.K. over summer imho as we see those temps very regularly.

I had the saddler out at lunchtime today and rode for her. It wasn't too bad and the forecast looks a bit cooler tomorrow so we are braving a fun ride. We can take it slowly and there are river crossings and water troughs to help keep cool

The forecast for the fun ride I wanted to go to has changed to a bit less warm.
Instead the thunderstorms are due a lot earlier in the day. I’m still not going.

I’ve been at Cornbury all day watching horses gallop in decent temps. Very very few struggled, maybe I saw 2-3 who looked like heat wasn’t their thing. I suspect the few withdrawals were for horses who riders knew wouldn’t cope.

Cooling facilities were superb. A line of fans in the shade and limitless iced water. Good job Cornbury!

So so proud to have my first ever homebred there in the 7yo 3*, he went off the back of 3 x I and it was a real step up for him. He jumped superb for most of it but got caught out off a turn to 18A, didn’t lock onto the hefty narrow tree stump before water, tried to take off, caught his knee and that was that!

Poor boy, but his first proper mistake xc ever for Mr golden-balls!

Lottie was fine at Chillington Hall Regional Champs. There was plenty of shade in the lorry park and warm up arenas so you could wait under a tree to be called forward. She was fit, strong and galloped clear round the XC track easily. I thought I might have to nurse her up the final hill but she stormed up it. 14 seconds under the optimum time and that was with me trying to slow her down all the way round. Was sloshed by very efficient Marshals at the end, stopped blowing very quickly then ambled back to the lorry where she was sloshed again though she showed no sign of needing to cool down more. Came off lorry dry and relaxed both there and back.

I think people just need to know their own horses and make decisions accordingly. I thrive in heat. I hate cold far more. Presumably horses can be the same.

Well done and definitely agree it’s individuals decisions. My previous horse would have been fine. Current horse would not enjoy it. Similarly I’m not the best - I had heatstroke after a show years ago. Mind you also had a chest infection after staying in a lorry with no heating at -6 degrees. Slightly older and wiser now. Well a lot older. Slightly wiser.

I found the ‘feels like’ temperature, the humidity and no breeze meant F seemed to be more affected than usual.
It was a little airless I agree but again - fit and healthy riders/horses with no underlying conditions/issues shouldn’t struggle in early 30’s temps. Appropriate fluids and breaks should suffice and electrolytes if doing fast work etc.

It’s the lack of any breeze at all that’s making it worse.
There’s a hot air balloon festival down the road, they are going up and then just hanging around. theres no wind to take them anywhere.
I have no plans anyway because horse is off work with a bruised foot.

Very airless here, not a breath and so very close.
I’m afraid part way round a local fun ride of 10-12 miles of hilly country and some jumps there are few facilities for anything other than perhaps an orange squash for the rider.
My pony is 18, I am 74 as of yesterday, so it’s as usual, horses( and riders ) for courses.
