A friend of mine and I are horse shopping on a budget…and its proving slightly more difficult than anticipated! Apart from a couple that were snapped from under us, the rest have been a bit…eek!! So are we dreaming, or is this a realistic budget for something that is smart but unproven?? Been a whie since either of us bought anything.

There is a stud sale locally but friend is a bit wary…and I think I may get carried away! :)

Are you looking for something started or unbroken?

I've had mine advertised and no interest!

This ^^

What are you looking for? We have a stunning 15.2hh spotted mare, rising three and gorgeous paces tb x for considerably less than £4k...

I do find it strange you are not finding anything in budget, do you both have a huge list of must, and with 2 of you that makes a massive list of must.
If not lets us know on here what you are loking for as someone will be able to help you

In the current market you should have plenty for a nice youngster.
What are your specs for the horse you are looking for

Something that moves well for dressage and that could also RC/BE at lower levels...something that's a nice person too with a bit of personality! 15.2 to 16.2

Having seen the issues some friends have had over very nice 'bargain' 5yo's who are apparently ready to go on (that turn out to have MAJOR issues) ideally want something that's just been started or is ready for starting (obv at sensible price...)

It really does depend what you're looking for, a nice RC type compared with a potential high level competition type. But with the market so bad, I would say that is a plenty big enough budget for a nice youngster

In that case yes I think you should def be able to find something, especially if only just backed and ready to go on

Would you consider something unbacked?

I guess we do have a list of likes / dislikes which does make it twice as difficult. For example we saw a mare at the weekend that the owner said was quiet...my friend liked her quietness, but I found the vacant expression a bit worrying!!! I like them to have a bit of sparkle. (she was wrong for us in other ways though)

We aren't in the best placed location either - as everything else is north of us! (SE coast)

And yes would consider unbacked if sensbibly priced. :)

You can have the beautful, talented, nice moving, lovely to handle, but silly to ride youngster that I bought ! I'll even deliver her for you.

lots of money, i Bought my 4 year old for 600 quid sold as broken mind and he really isnt so although will walk and trot with a rider on he is a bit clueless.

Id be tempted to say he is for sale but he is proving to be a very rewarding project (barring standing on my foot after unloading him at new yard to day and doing a turn on the fore hand across my toes.. hes halo well and truely slipped for that one!:D)

personally id if u have the time and experiance id be looking at some thing untouched that way your not buying other peoples problems. if theres an ounce of doubt over your experiance/patiance/resiliance then id say dont do it.

Another offer from me too :p

I have a stunning, talented, fab moving, black 4 year old warmblood gelding who is an angel to handle on the ground....but a sharp absoloute b*gger to ride at the moment! On the floor more than I am on him :(

As jhoward said - if you have any doubts over your ability to take on a young horse, DON'T do it.

I bought what I thought was a quiet 5 year old. She is lovely to handle, but she naps for England and rears when she is pressed to go forward. I truly wish I had listened to myself when my inner voice said, you don't want a 5 year old, but she seemed so straight forward...

Unless you and your friend are experienced in young horses, I would say try and find something older and more experienced. I wish I had.

I am keen to get something unbroken - would be packed off to Jason Webb for starting :) At least one bonus of being in Kent!!

Dizzle i think Glos it too far sadly...

Its tough though as although I think we want the same sort of thing, i.e. something with a bit of presence for dressage that can also jump, i think my friend wants to replicate her old boy (Sec D X) and nothing i've seen so far compares to my horse now!!! (blinded by the love for the ginger one who can do no wrong)

We have our 4 YO 16.1hh Dun mare, broken last year and turned away, now back in work established on the flat, teeny tiny bit of lateral, doing her first prelim next weekend. Hacks alone, in company, forward but not fizzy.

Just gets on with her job.

Been advertised for £3750 - Not ONE call! :-((((

What are you planning to do with it? We've just bought a lovely unraced (due to breeder giving up) TB who has been backed, ridden away and done a little bit of jumping. He is green, but has a fantastic jump and moves very well. I know TBs aren't everyone's cuppa tea, but the fact that he's never raced pretty much puts him on a par with any other 4yo :) He was £2k :)

I like TB's and friend is coming round to them, seen a couple so far, one was a very good example ... one not so good (that is me being polite). Its just finding a good one, so yes defo not against TBs.

Ahh, well in that case :D I love mine, only had him a few days, but he's an utter star! Again, I went to see one who had raced, and although was lovely in every way, had a fair few lumps and bumps on its legs which I wasn't entirely happy about on a 4yo, but I've been lucky with Ozz. IN FACT (just dawned on me) my lad's sister is also for sale! She's super smart, but I didn't try her as she was over my budget (£2.5k) but she's 5, I will PM you if you like? She looked smashing :)

if you want a tb, i have a stunning liver chestnut mare, good in all paces and just starting over tiny cross poles, and well inside your budget.
Also not far from you
She is 4yrs and about 16'1", not advertised yet as i am enjoying her too much, but will be in the next few weeks
