Slowly going insane :( I'm offering my absolutely stunning, beautifully behaved warmblood on permanent loan as a hack and I've had heaps of people ask if he comes with a full wardrobe. Now, you're basically getting a free horse and you also expect all his tack (his WOW cost me £1,500 alone) and rugs etc. Really? Why do people expect everything for nothing :( This is a hard enough rehome as it is without people wasting my time :( If you can't even afford tack and rugs for him then you ain't gonna be a good home for him now are you! AGHHHHHH! Why is finding a decent home for my horse proving so damn difficult?! :( :( :(

Well when its a loan I guess people will assume they come with tack... If you don't own the horse why would you invest in tack, it's not exactly cheap. Personally if I was loaning a horse out I'd want to know their tack fitted... Just my opinion though...

It's not an unreasonable question.

I have taken 2 on loan before that have come naked.

I'm currently advertising my 15.2hh for full loan as a hack, and he will go with tack and rugs ... probably to the value of approx 1K

I would have guessed horse would have come with some old tack at least for a loan to see how we got on? To be fair Ive never loaned! If I could afford £1000 plus of gear I'd buy my own horse though.
Good luck.

We've just taken a horse on full permanent loan she came with a full wardrobe saddle etc the owner wanted to make sure everything she had fitted her

Yeah, for a loan I'd expect tack tbh unless it was in use on a different horse. Normally, we do buy a saddle as most of our loan horses have come from homes where they've done very little and the tack wasn't right for us. But yeah, unless specifically stated otherwise I'd assume a loan horse would be coming with tack.

We've had 1 arrive 'naked' and we knew he'd be arriving with nothing because his stuff was also used by several other horses.

I loaned mine out with her wardrobe.

Unless I had loaned from a very good friend or with a watertight long term contract, I wouldn't want to invest a lot of money in tack for a horse that might be taken back at any time.

Could you loan your WOW with some sort of bond against it being returned in good condition?

Sorry - agree with everyone else. A rehome for a nominal sum is one thing (I've done that twice, and neither came with anything), but if I were loaning, I'd expect the horse to come with tack and rugs. If I loaned one of mine, I'd provide a basic wardrobe of tack, rugs, any boots required, and a headcollar

But this is not a normal loan, this is a PERMANENT loan - as in basically I'm giving the horse away to a forever home but simply retain ownership because I dont want him passed about (I would not intend to ever ask for the horse back).

Yes, I do use the WOW (and all his other stuff like rugs) on another horse. Even if I didnt I would not be prepared to basically give someone my saddle for free...

The loan could be terminated at a months notice of youve got a loan agreement, nobody in their right mind will take a horse fit it out with tack and rugs at probably well over 2 grand with the possibility of it being removed at a months notice, it certainly wouldnt be me. My loan horse came with 2 saddles several bridles and a host of rugs and boots

I've got a horse on permanent loan and she went with full wardrobe - around 10 rugs (yes I know, I like rugs!), full tack, feed, boots/bandages and everything else I had for that horse.

At lease I know that this winter, my little TB will be warm in the middle of Exmoor!

As will be stated in my contract though, I would NOT ever ask for the horse back unless there was welfare concerns. When I took a horse on a long term loan years ago, I got nothing with him. This isn't a short term type loan, it's a permanent one so I'm sorry but I totally disagree he should come with anything especially given the price of things nowadays, you can get decent fitting tack for not a huge amount. I can't afford to literally permanently GIVE my stuff away when I have other horses...

I have to go against the grain here. A friend of mine loaned her horse and it's rather expensive, custom made and fitted tack to someone known to both of us. One year on and the loanee has publicly declared her intent to sell the very expensive saddle and replace it with a cheap and dubious one size fits all self adjusting gullet saddle.

Owner contacted loaner to say they were quite happy for the saddle to be reflocked but under no circumstances was it to be sold and replaced with something of far less quality and value. What was going to happen to difference in even second hand resale price and the £200 replacement saddle? A very good question. >:(

Since this last communication the loanee has stopped all communication and has flatly ignored any requests to return the saddle to the owner. The issue will eventually be dealt with through the correct legal channels, but who wants that along with the stress of having to rehome a much loved horse in the first place?

So based on that very unhappy outcome, I would keep any high value tack and let the prospective loanee buy their own I'm afraid.

Then you will just have to wait till you find someone who does not mind .
But I don't think it's an unreasonable thing to ask .

For a loan I would expect at least a basic set of well-fitting tack and a basic set of rugs for all seasons. I would happily buy things that could be used on any horse and may gradually buy additional things if the loan worked out. By loaning you are retaining the right to take the horse away and I would not be confident about spending a lot of money up front especially on a saddle that may not fit anything else.

Even when I have bought a horse I want a turnout rug, stable rug and a head collar with them!

I may not expect a full wardrobe, but at least a couple of rugs suitable for the current weather and a head collar with the horse.... To be honest I think it's a little uncaring towards your horse to send it with nothing.....

And that is your choice, but is probably the reason youre struggling to get the person to take him on your terms

It's still a loan though. From the loaner's point of view, you could still take the horse back. If I was getting a horse on loan, I would expect at least a saddle and bridle to come with. I wouldn't want to spend lots of money fitting out nice new tack for a horse who didn't belong to me tbh.

I think as long as it's upfront and clear, then everything is simply a matter of discussion. You will find the right home. My very nice saddle was "stolen" while on loan ... Loaners replaced with a cheaper saddle ... but it did fit so in the end I didn't argue about it as couldn't be bothered. It did annoy me thought!

Hopefully they won't put a terrible saddle on him and then dump him on your doorstep when he's broken, behaviourally and physically!

To be honest, what a ridiculous thing to say. I care for this horse extremely well (and have gone through a lot with him) and am extremely fond of him which is why I will be picky about the home he goes to. I trust that any new home would be decent enough to do the most basic things of horse ownership such as getting a saddle fitted etc. I mean how difficult is that?! But hey, you apparently expect some freebie rugs with a horse when you buy one... do you expect a nice box of chocolates or some nice clothes in the back seat of a new car too?

I would also expect a horse on full loan to come with a full wardrobe. Tbh if you can't trust the loaner with your tack and rugs I'd wonder why you're willing to trust them with your horse?!

I can see both sides. I would expect a loan horse to come with tack and rugs I'll be honest, even a permanent loan one, however I also prefer to buy my own and with my last loan horse I did buy my own saddle and a replacement rug for one that was torn (I sent the rug back with him, but kept the saddle).

If your saddle etc is being used for another horse, explain that - don't get grumpy about people expecting it to come with. It's a natural thing to expect of a loan horse. However, in the situation it is understandable why not. So just explain it to them, and if they want to roll with it they will.

A loan is a loan at end of day and i would provide if i was loaning horse out or expect if i was taking loanon. A loan can be terminated by either party. sorry :)
