Ive just heard on the radio that you will now get a fine if you get caught smoking in your own car....

Please tell me its not true....

Personally I think how dare anyone tell me what I can and cant do in my own property! And I dont even smoke...

I know its the case for company cars as they are classed as public places as we can all drive in them. Dont know about private cars sorry

It is NOT true. The only time technically you shouldn't smoke in your own car is if you are using it for work purposes and carrying work related passengers.

I dont think the police can fine you as it's not law 'yet'.It is a guideline that is going into the new Highway code book that has recently come out,It is in there along with eating and drinking, changing channels on your stereo whilst you are driving. But it probbly wont be long before it is law.Ho hum.

I think it is being put into the highway code so that if you are involved in an accident and they find e.g. mars bar wrapper and chocolate all over your fingers

or you've crashed 'cos a lighted cigarette has dropped into an awkward place they have the muscle to charge you with careless driving or worse

and of course - easy to add onto the mobile phone law

Having been in the car with young children, I think they are far more distracting than eating, smoking, drinking. My nephews nearly caused my SIL to crash when they threw the tissue box at her when she was driving and they are normally well behaved. How will the law deal with this 'distraction'?

I think it is just a way of making more revenue with the driving without due care & attention thing. However - I can see the point. If you have a dodgy moment & you are eating a chocolate while driving, you will just drop it. If you are smoking, you can't just drop your fag because it will burn and possibly cause an accident on it's own as it singes your leg or car seats......

Thing is if I need to scratch my backside that might put me off what Im doing.

And so will the brats in the back..

No music either that might distract me too...

No picking my hooter either..

And you better strap my head forward to make sure I dont whip round and check out that fit bloke on the building site..

Its going mad in this country! Glad to see it isnt 'law' as such but it probably will!..

ROFLMSL!!

However i did once bash into someone because i was looking at someone hot. So perhaps they should just ban attractive people near roads too!

and of course whilst the Police are busy persecuting motorists they'll be far to busy to catch any tack thieves, trailer thieves, deal with street gangs or anything else that normal citizens REALLY want dealt with........

Do you think that is what they really want to be doing?

It is very easy to trivialise road safety, lets hope none of you are on your horses when you get winged by a distracted motorist.

BEEN on my horse when it was 'winged' by actually a racehorse transporter horsebox. Horse lucky to survive and if I hadn't been wearing a hat I'd be dead from a head injury from the wing mirror of the lorry (it was THAT close and no - my horse hadn't spooked)

however in a rural area where there are literally hundreds of unsolved crimes - on the urban fringe - to see 3 police sitting in their nice posh car doing b-awl with a speed camera is ludicrous - and don't preach about road safety because this is the same police that won't support us to have a 40 (let alone a 30 mph) limit on two local country lanes with around 300 horses in the area - so the lanes are 60 mph with lots of nice shiny 4x4s on the school run using it like the M1

yet a perfectly decent dual carriageway has 40mph speed cameras, speed signs AND 3 cops sat in a car - and yet the accident rate is really low

one or our lanes goes past a schoool..........and it's still 60mph

The fact of the matter is if they REALLY gave a hoot about peoples safety they wouldnt make cars that go fast enoug to kill people and horses alike.
If they really cared about people they probably wouldn't have cars at all really would they being that the car is really the killer, at the end of the day humans being humans have the propensity to lose concertration for a multitude of reasons - take a cigarette out of their hands and they'll probably be scrounging round for a chewing gum to stop them knocking out the old dear that pressed the crossing button then decided against crossing.

Should we all drive with neck braces to stop us turning our heads? And straps to stop us taking our hands off the wheel? No radios to listen to music and no passengers allowed?

Anyone who thinks this is genuinely done for peoples safety is wrong - after all how come they dnt just ban ciagrettes if that was the case?

Bad drivers will be bad drivers with or without fags...

I agree it's the nanny state and it's probably another imminent form of 'stealth tax' as with mobile phones and speed cameras

I would have more respect for this if road speeds were set according to the area and the capability of the road to carry traffic

but how many of us know of rural roads that are left at 60mph which don't have pavements and have horses, walkers and cyclists on them - yet perfectly good large highways are 40 or even 30 mph

ridiculous

I'd have far more respect for this 'safety initiative' if they sorted out rural roads at the same time

but apart from the well publicised on here effort to stop us riding 2 abreast to protect vulnerable horses/riders there isnothing in the new HC to help rural people

In my state its now illegal to smoke in your car if you are transporting children. Illegal or not, smoking in your car does detract from its resale or trade-in value. I usually buy used vehicles and nothing turns me off a car quicker than have it reeking of cigarette smoke.

IMO smoking in a car is just as dangerous as using a mobile phone or eating and drinking while driving....and it is far more objectionable too

I don't think they need to change any laws either as they can already do you for dangerous driving if they feel you did anything to contribute to an accident.

To the person who pointed out that children pose an even greater risk....true ! But it's all about reducing risk...you can never completely eradicate it.

I heard someone on the radio saying that it was guidance as you should always have two hands on the wheel. He said if you were lighting up with one hand and holding a cigarette in the other then you haven't got any hands on the wheel. He obviously wasn't a smoker!
Most smokers light up when the ciggie is in their mouth - not hand!

makes it quite hard to change gear then!

IMHO smoking is the most dangerous thing you can possibly do when driving - far more dangerous than using a mobile phone, which is not going to burn you if you drop it, or set fire to your car if you flick it out of the window and it blows back in. The highway code revsions do not ban smoking in cars, but I wish they would. Apart from anything else it is revolting to smoke in such a tiny space! I can't believe I used to do it; I must have smelt vile.

Smoking is vile I agree on that.

SN Jenga is like a tower game with rectangular blocks - it starts off intact with each player taking out a block and re-stacking it on the top, whoever makes the tower fall is the loser!!

Lmao at the nearly crash lookin at the fit bloke!!

but yea, my son is a much bigger distraction than me lighting a ciggie. So r they gonna fine me for driving with him in the car?

[/ QUOTE ]

no but gaffer tape for brats (for mouths and hands ) should be compulsory
grin.gif

ETA: you could always travel brats in the trailer too....

not read all th eposts but i think itssafe to assume that all of those who condone the ban which actually isnt a ban at all simply an indication that if you drive badley while smoking or doing anything else while driving you can be brought to bear , the mosy dangerous thing i think is sneezeing a lot lol anyway i take it your not smokers and we smokers know u dont like it and find it disgusting but i find drinking and eating meat disgusting too but i dont stop any of you lot doing it lol live and let live i say there are far worse things people can do than smoke my god we are not crimbs for gods sake give it a rest and get off your high horses and breathe rant over

The only way to make roads safer for all here in Italy, is to ban all Italian drivers! My oh has a friend who is a horsetransporter and has various lorries from 2 horses to 12 horses. All have a TV/DVD installed in the cabin so that he can watch a film or two while driving overnight to France or Belgium etc-says it keeps him awake!
shocked.gif
He will quite happily drive for 18 hours, sleep for 2 then take off again for somewhere like Copenhagen with the Junior SJ teams prized ponies!
As for the 'no smoking' while you drive.....!!!!!!!
crazy.gif
. I read somewhere that a lot of unexplained lethal crashes are due to wasps or other insects flying into the car and stinging or distracting the driver. So the moral of the story is-dont drive, its probably easier to stay at home !
wink.gif

if smokers want to kill themselves in a slow, smelly expensive and ultimately horrendous way then-be my guest
cool.gif
. I would not get in a car with a smoking smoker and would like to think that a smoker would respect my habit of not smoking by not lighting up
tongue.gif
. Im saying this as a new 'non smoker'-after 30 odd years of living around and being orally attached to a ciggie, its lovely to feel liberated....AT LAST!!
laugh.gif
Smoking should be banned-full stop! Mairi and her lovely new lungs
