I saw a very large (at least 2" ) black and yellow flying thing today. Either a queen wasp or a hornet at a guess. I didn't like it. Am enjoying the Dragon flies though. Also had hordes of May flies here the last few weeks, more than I've seen before. Going to be a summer of flying monsters I think.

It wasn't a female broad bodied chaser was it? Just with you mentioning the dragon flies. We have them round the pond and they are quite scary until you realise what they are 😱

Oh, have googled, never heard of those before, thank you. But probably not. It was out in the hedge where there are hundreds of bees usually so assumed it was collecting nectar, but the bees weren't there as normal which makes me think perhaps it was collecting bees. Also not very near water. If I see it again I will try and photograph, but must admit I took a look and shut the door on it. The dog is having a marvellous time hunting down the maybugs and I didn't want her doing the same to whatever it was..:-!

Yes red, i noticed the first ones yesterday here in west ireland too! The horses knew before me as they were less reluctant to go out in full sun and preferred the deep shade.
Today i saw one latched onto my gelding’s goolies ☹️ I flicked it off and avoided a shocked leg lift! 😁
Battle stations commence, full artillery required now to keep the buggers off…Zebra camoflage here we come!

Aww i have a zebra ride on rug 😂 I tried it once at canter he was like a bucking bronco 😂 fine at walk though 😂
He is fine with the normal zebra outfit, however I have a rug where I sewed tulle skirts onto the side so none could get underneath. Can't wear it if there is a breeze as it flies up and threatens to get caught on car wing mirrors 🤣

Oh no! Feel so sorry for you guys. I got bit a few times a couple of years ago for the first time while visiting an island. They hurt quite a bit for a bite. Fortunately (touch wood) they aren’t overly common up here or I’m not a prime target. Hope your zebra stripes keep them at bay.
