Norfolk terriers brought in to rid pig farm of rat infestation

I used to live near a pig farm with a serious rat problem, I can’t imagine a worse job than working there, intensive pig farms are the worst places imaginable. I’m amazed they wanted the publicity about what happened

I agree, the poor pigs, the place looks like a filthy dump. Perhaps they need to look at their animal husbandry.
Good on the dogs though rats up to 1kg how horrific.

they slept well that night!

There's a fair few youtubes that I've found interesting to watch when bored, especially when they've got a lurcher with them too (slighlty different technique).

My lurcher would have heart failure at a rat, but the 2 whippets would be straight in there! Floyd had a lovely time at the yard the other day looking for rats. I was very glad he didnt find any!

My dog would be in heaven there. She’s not so good with mice as they are too quick, but loves ratting. I’m not so keen on the holes she’s chewed In the stable walls though ?

The dog (Border collie X Sheltie) I had as a child once caught a mouse. I opened the door from the bottom of the stairs into the back room. He flew across the room and put both front paws down on the mouse, killing it. Then he lifted up his paws and just stared at it, not knowing what he wa supposed to do next.

The one and only rat we've ever had in our stables my Lakeland terrier caught it in a trice and snapped its neck. She'd never even seen a mouse before to my knowledge. It must be total instinct :)

I believe it is. Our fluffy terrier found a rat in the garden a few years ago and promptly closed his jaws over the rat's head and killed it with this one bite. He had not come across a rat since we got him.

I have taken our terriers (who were patterdales and a patt x jrt, used on foxes, over to a friends when he was mucking out his cattle sheds. Awesome fun! The red mist descended and instead of being a wimp I dived in with a fork and set to. Much more fun than many a days hunting!

Wow Clodagh you're brave x x - I was dancing the jig of terror in the middle of the yard squealing, as the rat (momentarily) ran towards me with the terrier close on its heels .....

Might send Ted for some training ?? showed him some ratting videos on the TV (he loves watching squirrel videos) and I kid you not he was hiding behind the sofa ?

As a child, we had a mouse problem. A neighbour’s cat was brought in and sat looking bemused as the mice ran round him. Our Keeshond was far more successful, killing any of them that dared to approach him and his nightly Bonio!

Years ago when I was working as a groom the family had an Old English Sheepdog who was as daft as a brush, she got out of her bed one morning and a squashed mouse was found in there. We didnt think for one moment she had killed it deliberately in fact she probably wasnt aware it was in there and just laid on it, anyway it was definitely dead lol absolutely flattened as she was a big girl.

We had a fox terrier who was an amazing ratter! He must have killed his first one at about 16 weeks old and also used to dispatch rabbits, squirrels and even adders quickly and efficiently. We never trained or really encouraged him, it was just in there.

Bruno is an excellent mouser and ratter. We've never encouraged him and its pure instinct but it's quite incredible to watch. He's so proud of himself afterwards and brings me them just to make sure I know. He's teamed up with a neighbour's cat before, cat chased it out from under the shed and Bruno killed it. He's desperate for a squirrel but not managed it yet!
When we had a greyhound, he once caught a pigeon in town. Killed it outright but refused to drop it and walked around town with a wing hanging each side of his mouth ?????

We had the walk of shame when Brig caught a huge wood pigeon in the park which he then dropped and Zak and Bear kept exchanging it. So embarrassing as another owner came out of the woods to see them picking it up. He went through a phase of catching pigeons, god knows how given his advanced age!
