My rising 3 year old gelding has strange nose bleeds, no vets seem to know what it is and have suggested retirement for him as no-body knows if he will get better or worse as this has not been seen before. He has even been down to the RVC in London and has had loads of tests done (inc scopes, lung biopsy, lung and heart x-rays and scans, exercised with ECG, and blood and urine tests), but no conclusive results apart from the fact that the blood is definately coming from the lungs.

I've been doing lots of research and have come across equiwinner, just wondered if anyone has any knowledge of whether this works or not? (I know that even if it works for some horses it may not work for him as he is something of a 'special' case)

It seems such a shame to just put him in a field for the rest of his life and not even try something to help him get better, he has the most beautiful movement and I really would love to be able to ride him one day!

We used Equiwinner on our hunter hes now 18 and hasnt bled for 3 seasons, so i certainly recommend it, but stick religiously to the instructions.

Are they big bleeds or a trickle from the nose and how often does he get them?

he used to get them everytime some fairly big bleeds, scary, and sometimes just a trickle, racehorses are prone too but as i sayBe has nothing in3 seasons. All i can say is give it a try- might take 2 courses but worth the 120 quid odd for the 2 boxes. Bythe way, our boy was bleeding from his luns to after being endoscoped.,

The first few he had (about 18 months ago) were very big, It actually came out of both nostrils and his mouth as a light red foam and he was very weak-thought we were going to loose him the first time it happened.
The vets gave him some steriods about a year ago which have certainly calmed the bleeds down and now they look like more typical EIPH episodes, ie coming out of both nostrils as pure blood but rarely anything seen from the mouth now.
It normally happens when he is made to work (often happens just at trot) but I have been working him really gently once a week on lunge and have not seen him bleed for quite a while. However last night he got one in the field after playing with the other horses, which has left me tearing my hair out again as I thought he was getting better!

Sounds awful.

Fortunately i have no experience of horses with nosebleeds therefore can offer no helpful advice, i hope he comes right soon,

Best of luck

:)

No actual experience but Nicky Henderson racehorse trainer was in trouble for having his horse injected with something from the vet to stop bleeds. The reason he was in trouble was you are not allowed to use this prior to racing.Perhaps this is something you could discuss with your vet who is bound to be aware of it. Also I seem to remember Richard Maxwell selling something on his site to stop bleeds I believe it was some sort of nasal strip, worth looking & checking.

It was for injecting tranexamic acid, a drug used in human medicine for excessive bleeding of many causes. Not licensed for horses but AFAIK no equivalent product is, so no issue with using it if you aren't competing, although side effects are pretty unknown. Furosemide, a diuretic drug that is licensed for horses can also be quite effective in reducing EIPH. Again, only if you are not planning on competing though.

When we were down at the RVC they said that drugs were highly unlikely to work with him, which is why im so intrigued by equiwinners claims that their product does not contain drugs but uses electrodes to basically revert the horses internal system to how it should work naturally. It seems like an idea that is a bit 'outside the box' and its possible that vets may not recommend it as it is not something that they can supply (you get it direct from manufacturer) but maybe thats just me being cynical!

rosiefronfelen-thanks for sharing your experience-glad it worked for you! hope if I try it that it works just as well for my boy :)
