my mare was given the go ahead to be turned out and, hoorah hoorah, everything was going great! her leg was so much better and she was striding out more comfortably. (still being careful of course, and ensuring she has ice boots daily etc).. but......

i'm not sure if its from a fly, or something else(although she has had a fly mask on, when out apart from the very first time-- she was very, very het up and i chanced leaving her without one as it was so hot. she wasn't out for long that first time, a few days ago). but I noticed tonight her eye was a bit weepy/swollen and she kept trying to rub it. she wouldn't let me take a proper look so i got her to smile and saw how bloodshot it was- so i literally whipped out my phone there and then and called the vet.

vet asked for photo and advised for 2 bute tonight then see how it is tomorrow, and possible visit. i didn't want to leave it as i know you have to be so careful with eyes.

its quite bloody over the top, this is the best photo I could get so doesn't show all of it or the redness, but it made me panic!- has anyone had or seen this before?

thanks xx

My mares eye can get a bit swollen/weepy etc with flies. I’m guessing she knocks it or pokes it with something in her bid to get away from them. A few days of eye cream or just washing with water if not too bad always does the trick but I do always phone/send photos to vet.

Eyes are not to be messed with!

thanks everyone, she has been turned out late afternoon/evening to try and miminise the flies but no joy it seems :(

she's been rubbing her eye during the night and its grazed now on her eyelid, its also still a bit weepy but not as swollen. still quite bloody, so i've phoned the vet and they're coming back out x

hope it's something easily treated. They are such a worry aren't they, and just don't help themselves (though i can't talk, if I have a bad eye the first thing i do is rub it!!)

Oh no, you are having a real time of it. I hope it's nothing x

My mare would get conjunctivitis badly in one eye only if she didn't wear her mask. I used Goldeneye ointment 1% chloramphenicol - a real devil to apply successfully, but sorted it perfectly.

ah thankyou both! i'm sure I phone the vets at least once a week..

vet came, put some green stuff in her eyes- then flushed them out with eye drops and also a jab just in case. she needs to have half a bute twice a day for a few days, and eye drops again tomorrow. and piriton. aaand to keep mask on just so it doesn't turn into an ulcer!

phew, she keeps me on my toes to say the least xx

The dye is to check for any corneal scarring or injury. I presume none was apparent? You'd be jolly unlucky to have any. Might even have been a bite on the eyelid. With eyes, better to be safe than sorry and definitely a vet call at least x
