Having only just retired one horse for being permanently not quite right we're not having doubts about Lil. I have yet to have a ride where she hasn't reared with me. Some of it is clearly tantrums and nappiness but we're starting to wonder if there is pain in there somewhere as well. Our back woman is coming on Friday, not sure whether I want her to find something so we have a reason for the behaviour or if i want her to tell me there is nothing wrong

What would your gut feeling be if a horse reared and broncked every time you got on? She does settle and work nicely once she's stopped trying to kill you but its a little tedious and sooner or later she's going to get me off if this carries on.

I'd say she's had pain in the past still remembers, but as she settles down while being ridden , it could be muscles that are tight and tense. you could try magnetic blanket on her back 1/2 hour I think or lunge her 10 mins both sides before you get on.

Oh hun.

Back. Saddle.

Dizz was stropping on downward transitions. Turns out that her neck was a tad out and her saddle no longer fitted, despite both being checked the week before Christmas.

I think your doing the right thing.........
I would think first it could be pain related.
Having the same prob, with my mare at min,. Just had her scanned yesterday, as shes just not right. Im convinced her problem is connected to her seasons. I and vet think she may have a cyst. She has been very uncoperative as well, just since she has come into season.
So, I would check all possibilities, teeth, back, etc. Hope you get to bottom of it, its so disheartening when they wont co- operate

If you look hard enough for sights of pain you'll probably find some. Whether these are the root of the behavioral issues is another question. Personally I'd either try sending it back or try to persevere treating the issues as behavioral for now, just check her teeth and saddle fit.

My friends horse had similar issues which also included bolting and bronching she got the saddle checked, a back specialist out, vet etc etc one day someone suggested kissing spines, she called the vet back out and insisted on him examining for kissing spines, the horse was referred to Willesley clinic and after xray it turned out it had KS and really bad too, the vet there said he wasn't surprised the poor thing had issues with being ridden,
Horse has been successfully operated on and is now back in ridden work. Not saying yours has this but it just goes to show you can have 'experts' out and they can still get it wrong.

I would defo go down the lines of back/saddle area...
My mare changed shape so much in the first 12 months that I had her that I had 4 saddles in the first year! And each time she let me know that there was a problem as her flatwork deteriorated. As your mare may be the sensitive type,
I would give her the benefit of the doubt and get her saddle checked after having her back done. Good Luck. x
