Not riding - so fed up of being judged!

I've only ridden twice in the last fortnight, because I haven't felt like it. I'm totally, utterly fed up of being judged by other liveries for not riding.

I work full time & run my own business as well, it's been a really busy couple of weeks covering summer/school holiday leave for people I work with. I'm tired & I simply don't feel like riding every day.

I'm fed up of the 'oh, not riding again tonight?' comments and the rolled eyes. My horse is none the worse for it, in fact seems to be thriving on the break.

Why do people feel the need to comment all the time and be so judgemental?

Sorry, moan over :o

Because the horse is wasted - ****!
Because its not "normal" to have a horse and not ride it - ****!
You must not love it the way normal owners do - ****!
You are neglecting it - ****!

Basically these people who make you feel bad - ****!

Don't worry, so long as your horse has food, water and friends and is happy and healthy, tell them to EFF OFF! :D

I didn't ride for a couple of months last year- Just chucked him out in the field with his mare that also was on 'summer holidays'. It did him a lot of good, he was keen and ready for work when I brought him in for autumn. Also got comments, But who cares?
It doesn't concern them! Do what you feel like :)

You should be ashamed.

Apparently your horse text one of my horses yesterday. It read

"I am so desperate to get that metal thing in my mouth and to have to cart a human about, its so unfair, my owner leaves me to graze happily in the field. How selfish is she?"

My horses were appalled with you. So am I.

Tell the other liveries to shove it where the sun dont shine. People like that really rip my knitting.........

Don't listen to other liveries in my opinion most the time this just leads to heartache as they always seem to have something negative to say.

Due to my poorly foot I have hardly ridden for the last 5 weeks and my horse has not suffered one little bit from it. Instead of placing pressure on myself to ride I have spent more time relaxing with her and doing other things to make her feel special.

Keep your chin up hun :)

did your horse get the text raff sent?

"my owner is a right useless bint. she leaves me out, munching on yummy grass with my friend. when all i want to do is go round in circles and kicked."

(btw 'go round in circles and get kicked' is an accurate description of our 'schooling'... i wasn't implying it was OP's style...)

*realises how lame it is to have to put explanations into everything written on HHO to stop it being taken wrong way*

Raff has sent loads of text, also got a facebook campaign ongoing..................your a disgrace, just like the OP....

Cant understand how you two can live with the cruelty involved of letting horses happily graze in a field.

God i hate people like that, there is no need to stick your noses into what other people do with their horses unless a) they ask for advice/constructive criticism or b) the horse is being neglected.
So what if you havent ridden much for a while....your horse is probably enjoying the break, you have been busy, your both happy. Dont feel pressured to ride if you dont feel like it or have time....!
Other riders (no one at my yars but other friends who ride) often criticise me because i dont ride weekends. I work monday - saturday most nights till 6.30/7 then go and ride at least 5 of thse nights so get home late every night.
OH accepts my hobby and encourages me to do something i enjoy and never complains, but im not going to push my luck and ride on a sunday aswell. Also the yard is chaotic! And tbh by then im bloody shattered and need a day to relax with the OH and do something else.
I always get comments like...."god sundays are the best days of the week to ride"
"you should make the most of weekend riding" etc etc.
It makes me really annoyed!

Hope things get less hectic for you soon and you can get back to doing more riding if you feel like it!

Just smile and say nothing or just say in a jokey way 'You really don't need to be so concerned with how many times a week I ride you know!'. They should get the message that you don't need to be offering up 'excuses' to them. Been there and experienced it and it is so annoying.

It's up to you when you ride, as long as your horse is happy and healthy they should get their nose out of your business!

There are a pain & should be ignored

Fair enough, riding is meant to be FUN!

I'm sure your horse is very happy, forget them!

Why do people feel the need to comment all the time and be so judgemental?

Sorry, moan over :o

I actually admire you for not riding if you don't feel like it! I wish I could do it!!!!! I beat myself up and force myself to ride even tho I'm tired etc and it sometimes doesn't end well!!!!!!!!

I do like to ride lots in summer but we all have those days where we've had a long day etc and just want to go home & relax but I go on a huge guilt trip!

If you don't feel like it don't do it, as long as your horse isnt suffering then what's the issue?

Fair play to you too for just saying you're not riding instead of saying you have ridden when you actually haven't!

Oh and Bailey's text would read 'woman, where are you? My tea is 5 minutes late. This incompetence will not be tolerated'! :D

Lol, you lot make me smile!

Sarah1, I think the reason their comments bother me is because I do feel guilty for not riding :o Why do we beat ourselves up about it?!

Right, determined not to feel the need to justify myself for 'wasting' my horse. Stuff 'em!

Thanks all :)

p.s clipcloppop, no worries of any offence-causing here, our schooling sounds remarkably similar anyway ;)

Because we're daft! :D

As I said riding when you're not up for it or feeling a bit off par isn't usually a good idea anyway so better not to ride & let your horse relax in the field instead of picking up on any negative vibes from you on board! Been there, done that & it's silly! :)

Sod 'em I say! :p :D

Wasting our horses! HOw many of us have felt like that?! I do all the time because Bailey isn't out competeing every weekend etc.

How stupid is that tho - he doesn't sit in the field thinking 'I wish I was out competing this weekend'! I think his main concern is 'grass' followed by 'damn flies'! :)

It depends on the horse.

I had a livery who didn’t ride because she was so terrified. Subsequently her horse, with horrendous ligament damage and collapsed fetlocks, suffered as she did not even bother to restrict its grazing either. The vet had advised to walk it to build up strength as strangely (though I don’t know how) the mare was sound. Her other horse was fat with no topline. Both mares were miserable, despite being turned out, anti social, and used to happily trash fencing, bite people, windsuck etc. When she did get her backside in gear and ride, mares were completely and utterly different – she managed 3 weeks solid of gentle hacking last year and even commented that they were happier and the windsucking etc was done.

I have another livery that doesn’t get ridden and it is one of the worst horses on the yard.

So thats my argument.... sorry.

I used to have to forget riding/driving for the whole of august and the whole of december when I ran my own pub. We were just too busy so the ponies got those two months as holiday every year. But i never got tired of riding the rest of the year , my breaks just made me look forward to it more . Invent a mystery lameness for your horse......the liveries will soon be telling you that you cant ride.........better still save hard and get a house with some land and you can do what you like without anyone sticking their nose in.

tell the its fine, when theyve ran their horses into the ground and need retiring by 18 and ur's is still happily hacking, then come back n have a word.

all horses need exercise, be it turn out, riding, free school, etc, i know someone who rode her 6 year old daily for an hour from the age of 3, the horse is now a nightmare (pun intended) and has no sparkle, my just turned 5 year old is ridden 4 times a week, and occasionally, does have a week off, if i feel she has learnt alot lately, then when i got back to it, she's happier, energetic and more up for it.

tell them where to go, if ur happy, and ur horse is happy and healthy, who gives a flying ****

Bella's texts tend to read, "Wxi&2D ka;laid8(9 jaf;a ei;a;; ffh3&&3k jala;;"

She's not very good with those small keypads.

Agree with everyone else. Most horses are not pining away in a nice grassy field wishing that someone would take them out and make them work.

this is one of the things i hate about some livery yards (not my current one i hasten to add!)- how people have to stick their noses in. R2R- your e.g. is clearly a different one and causing a bit of a welfare issue. OP clearly just can't be arsed at the minute. i have 2 times a year (jan and june) where i do exam marking alongside my normal teaching- so i ride very little. however, it does my horse good to have chilling time in the field- think how we would feel if we had to work solidly for 52 weeks a year with no downtime... depending on my mood, OP, my response to your problem would be a) good mood scenario- "my horse is having a holiday, he felt a bit stale last time i schooled him" or b) bad mood scenario "unlike you i am not perfect. i am tired and stressed because of work and can't be bothered riding. i would love to live in a world like yours where everything is perfect all the time" haha ;):D

Agree with this - I think a lot of horses are better for the work, probably why I force myself to ride even when it's not a good idea as my boy is happier when in work but OP has said her horse isn't suffering & is happy enough so I don't see the harm for now, I'm sure when things calm down at work OP will increase the ridden work again.

Oh right, because your horse has had a little word in their ear has he?

Tell them to eff orf, i had this at my old yard and used to feel really guilty. New yard much better!

By the by, my instructor actively encourages me to give Horse time off every so often. Imagine if you had to work 365 days a year? Productive much? No.

I don't know what is wrong with people like this. As other posters have pointed out in a lol-worthy manner, I bet your horse is hardly texting his mates "woe is me" texts, it's probably the other way around!

Our old YO (not a rider herself) was always bitching about her liveries not riding enough, most just did it when she wasn't about, but if she didn't see you, she'd just assume you weren't

I dont think it matters as long as horses' weight is ok :)

time off does suit some and not others, F has in the past gotten much stiffer and found work very hard afterwards so try to avoid giving him any extended periods off.

Just tell them politely that if you require their advice, you will ask for it. My mare is 5, she is ridden usually 5/6 times weekly, a mixture of schooling, hacking, lessons & competing. This weekend we went to a little show, had had a major confidence issue earlier in the week, so very very happy to have popped round a tiny clear round, 11 fences, twice with only a mistake at one fence. My YO said I should have taken her round again, err no, she travelled for 1 1/2 hours total, warmed up twice & jumped very well apart from my mistake, then stood on the trailer for 1 1/2 hours while I helped my friend. I think at 5 thats quite a big day, & she didn't need to jump again, so clearly I don't ride enough either!!

I haven't ridden one of mine for well over a week, sometimes I think it does them good to have a bit of time off every month, just like us, gives us chance to re-charge the batteries etc.

But even so, it doesn't matter, you ride when you feel like it, when you get time, if the horse is not competing it's not like it's a fitness issue.

Take no notice, tell em take their faces to the yard toilet for a good squeeze :D

cos there talking *****e :D
