Just caught up and glad you are making good progress. As you say, the further along the journey you go, the progress goes in small increments but when you assess them it feels good. I'm driving now (had to when I had to take OH to A&E back in December when he broke his ankle ) and this week managed to take our dog for a couple of walks on the common it felt soooooo good to be getting back to normal though with a limp! Take it easy but keep up with the exercises, good luck

I’ve now taken over full evening duties, and I walk to and from the field, but my friends get the girls out the gate for me because I wear a plastic bag over my boot and I don’t want to freak the horses out and end up on my bum 🤣

Im slower than normal, but Im getting there. I can’t get to the top of the muck heap yet though!
Only slight concern is I have developed quite an obvious clicking noise when I walk, which has only happened this week. Im guessing this could be the lack of cartilage that’s now in that joint, which isn’t a surprise. No real pain with it at this stage so that’s good. I will ask the surgeon about that on Friday.

I find the nerve stuff fascinating and now have distinct areas that I can press to start off a pins and needles reaction in a completely different part of my foot, which amuses me far too much. I’ve also discovered if I bend my foot in in a certain way, the fib plate sort of pulls and I can really feel and see it under the skin, which again, I get some sort of weird enjoyment from. Honestly, I think there’s something wrong with me! 😁

5 days to go!! My dad bought me a lovely pair of sketchers a while back, because they were high soled and evened me up a bit against the boot. Of course I’ve only been able to wear the left one, so I’m looking forward to wearing the right one too. Think I’m going to take that one on Friday and my aim is to walk out wearing it 💪

Two days to go! Starting to think about footwear now and what to wear at the yard for the best support.
Not sure I’ll get into country boots just yet as I can’t straighten my foot that well to get into them to begin with, but I’ll give it a go. Other options are my short mountain horse boots.

Suggestions most welcome!

Already planning on riding at the weekend 😁

When I broke my knee and also when I did the ligaments in my ankle, once the rigid support was off, I used gamgee and a bandage to ensure stability, with an XL boot (Mr Red's), not zipped up, and closed with Vetwrap.

Then I went to Tubigrip and a turn or two of Vetwrap, again with a zipped boot (but my own this time) that would not zip, so was Vetwrapped on top. I evented like that, good job the Vetwrap was black!

I would take the gubbins off whenever I was somewhere safe, such as at home or shopping, just used it where I was handling or riding horses as I couldn't guarantee what would or would not happen. Gradually I strengthened and didn't need anything.

Three months since my accident and my bones have now healed!
Ligaments are going to take up to a year but that’s fine.
Consultant was very pleased and has given me the go ahead to ditch the boot! And drive!

The syndo screw (through bones) will likely snap at some point so he told me not to be alarmed if I hear a loud pop and get pain for 2-3 weeks (glad he warned me!) but usually they still just leave it in even if it’s broken.

I can’t stop grinning! I feel like I’ve been given my life back and it feels amazing 😁

Oh so pleased for you.

just keep taking things steadily, don’t push too much.

And good hiking or patrol (think police, ambulance etc) boots are both comfy and supportive. OK, I can’t ride in them (short boots and chaps provide more support than long boots I find) but I teach in them, and do yard work in them.

My go to are Bates 5 1/2 inch tactical, but you need to try them to find out if they will provide support where you need it. From the X-rays, it looks as though your screws are in a fairly similar location to my breaks - but if your legs are longer than mine, my favoured boots may be no good for you.

I always think the pointy ends of the screws look the most "ouchy". Welcome to the bionic club - but take things carefully with those ligaments.!!

Fantastic news Scats!!! Enjoy your freedom, does it feel weird walking without the boot?

Took a while to get a normal trainer on because my foot is still so swollen 🤣 Just drove to the yard in trainers and then put my short mountain horse boots on to muck out. Managed fine, I do have a limp but it eases a bit the more I walk. Had to put my car seat quite far forward to do the pedals though!

I just can’t explain how wonderful it feels to get my life back. I’m never taking anything for granted again after this (I know I will, but you know what I mean!).

3 months and 2 days later…
107558

Just had a 10 minute walk around the school this evening. I was 99% sure she’d be fine to take out round the fields straight off, but I thought that after 3 months out of work, I had better play it a bit safe the first time.

My ankle is weak, not surprisingly. Oddly I largely forgot that you have to push off your right foot to get on and that took me quite by surprise (honestly, I promise I’m not as thick as I sound!). Once on board, my ankle was ok in the stirrup for about a minute and then it majorly throbbed so I might have to do small amounts in the stirrup and the rest without for the time being. Obviously we will be walking for a good while, which is just aswell because it wouldn’t withstand rising trot at the moment.

Brilliant to be back on board, and Millie is worth her weight in gold, but I think this is going to be a long riding rehab journey. Can’t contemplate getting back on the loony yet as you need to be absolutely rider fit for her and I’m in no shape to deal with her at the moment. Not that she minds!

Wow that is remarkable, even after 7 months I don't feel ready to try getting on board. I have found combination of trainers and short yard boots the way forward - no way could I get long boots on yet. I'm happy that I can walk the dog though and about to get my bike into action.

Im riding in short boots at the moment, mountain horse lace up ones. There’s no chance I’d get into long boots either. Im struggling even with trainers coz my heel area is so swollen that I can’t seem to fit my foot into them and when I do I feel like it’s being squeezed 😅

Ankle was sore last night. Not dreadfully but it was letting me know it was annoyed at the situation!
