Dear All,

I am trying to help my neighbours kid with a schoolproject. To make a long story short, we need numbers on how many dressage riders there are, approximatly offcourse, in each European nation.

We are from the Netherlands and have found numbers for the Netherlands from the KNHS.

For other countries including the UK, we cannot seem to find anything. So we thought to ask you! Does anyone have a good guess and/or a good source to use? Or maybe if enough of you make an educated guess we can practise some statistics on it together :)

Any help would be appreciated and probably should say sorry for abusing the English language at some point in the above message.

Kind regards!

Your English is much better than my Dutch so you won't get any complaints from me!

I would contact British Dressage and ask how many members they have. This won't be a total as many (like me) take part in local, 'unaffiliated' (not part of the national organisation) competitions so won't have joined BD but I think that will be most complete picture you will get. Good luck with the project.

Thanks Annagain,
Their site states they have 14.000 members that compete, this indeed seems a bit low compared to the Dutch numbers with 50.000 registered competing riders with an estimate of about 20% of them doing dressage competitions. I cannot imagine the UK participation being that much lower than the Dutch considering your vastly bigger population!

But, its a good place to start so thanks.

Yeah I'm not sure how easy it would be to get the number of unaffiliated competitors as by definition they dont have a membership body that you can ask.

This might be harder than we'd hoped then! In the Netherlands, as far as I can tell, the KNHS has a pretty good feel for the overall numbers.
Maybe size is in our adventage in this case ;) We're tiny after all. I have found out there are 3 million horseriders in the UK! I think we'll just assume about 20% is into dressage like they are here and go with that.

Id go with the BD figures.
UK has a different equine culture to Netherlands and whilst dressage is getting more popular year on year, we have such a big leisure riding population and also hunting/Eventing background.
