Hi
Whenever I put my saddle on I always make sure my numnah is pulled up high underneath the saddle so its not flat on my horses back (as I was always taught to do). However whenever I get back from riding (I'm only walking at the mo as horse has been injured) its always flat and quite tight across the top of her back and there is no air to be seen!

Any suggestions on different types of numnah, would a thicker one work better?

Two things that might help;

1 - make sure your girth is tight enough, if you ride with it loose numnahs can slip. Also tighten it as much as you can from the floor, rather than mounting then tightening it from the saddle.

2 - look at high wither numnahs, whether your horse has high withers or not. The best one I have found is the Roma Grand Prix high wither saddlecloth, its just a basic cotton saddlecloth but it is shaped really well so sits right up under the saddle and doesn't move and is only about £15.

I always use high wither numnahs so they sit right up in the gullet and use the straps on the numnah that helps to

Yep, agree with this. My horse doesn't have especially high withers but I use a high wither numnah just to be sure it won't slip down.

Just spend ages at the Saddle Fitters and he recommended a Barnsby Grip Pad. It has grippy type material on both sides of the numnah so neither the saddle or numnah slip .... which should help. Looks nicely made as well.
