Have just read through this whole thread and found it most entertaining - thought the original post was completely patronising and provocative, maybe had some truth to it in terms of people hauling their horses' heads in, but I think you will see this pretty much everywhere, and I think that most of us who understand about working a horse in an outline have mistakenly done this at some point without engaging the back end - doesn't mean we are the worst riders in the world though and shouldn't be allowed to school - just means that we got it wrong at that moment - and hopefully most will realise they got it wrong, partic. at affiliated level, by reading their judges comments. The thought of allowing stewards to pick and choose who is a *good* rider is pretty horrifying for all sorts of reasons.
I found it really annoying that arrogant old TT takes no account of people who have had lessons, know the theory of working a horse through from behind, but then get to the event (maybe their first one or two) and suddenly find that a) their legs have turned to lead and they can't sit in their saddles anymore and b) that Dobbin has transformed into something resembling a hobby horse, because they are both nervous and tense about being at a large event. So they fiddle around a bit with their hands, and push and shove a bit because they are nervous, but it doesn't kill either of them.
Guess what TT, this doesn't mean that they shouldn't keep schooling at home (I found this the most insulting thing about the whole post, that people shouldn't be allowed to school their own hosses - I mean, who else is going to do it? Blo*** Anky Van Grunsven?) and improving in their own sweet time, to the point that they can go to an event, relax their horse and themselves and gradually IMPROVE.
My horse went to his first ODE the other weekend - granted not affiliated, but his first none the less. We both numptied out a bit in the dressage, particularly in the canter through nerves (canter had been going wonderfully at home), ran through the first show jump and had 7 stops XC, but I guarantee you that horsy (and me) will come out next time having learnt from the experience, having had more *shock* schooling at home, and do a hell of a lot better. He may even progress to novice events at some point. See you there TT.
Bye the way Persephone, fantastic use of the God and Bono joke - PML!!
Was rather scared by the 'because I am b****** good' comment - my first live HHO troll!!
I have always thought that boasting and indeed pride, cometh before a fall. I also don't like imodesty, but maybe that was because I was brought up that way......
Sorry another essay 'cos I'm still working abroad and am bored
