Oddest comments people have made about your dogs

A man in the local park said that my (pure bred) Airedale bitch puppy had ‘a bit of Airedale in him’ l suppose the colouring as puppies confuses some people. He wouldn’t be convinced she wasn’t a cross breed.
My sister was carrying her English bull terrier puppy down the road and some children who passed her squealed ‘Look, that woman had a pig!’

Whilst walking our fit fox red and yellow labradors a few years back we were asked what breed they were… by a lady walking fox red labradors. We answered ‘labradors, the same as yours’.
A new beater on my local shoot looked at my labs, I had 4 out. He said I can see that one is a lab (Red) but what are the other three? I said all labs, he said no they are too skinny to be Labradors. Now honestly there were maybe 15 labs our picking up that day and mine really aren’t any skinnier then the others.

My beautiful, very well-trained GSD was walking politely to heel on a flat leather collar and a horse lead rope. A male leapt out of a hedge beside me and yelled " Your dog's useless! It should have gone for me by now!" GSD was looking pointedly at this person, had become very still and her top lip was beginning to curl . . . He started to unzip his trousers. I said to GSD "Look! Sausages!!" She launched herself at him, knocked him flat and sat on his chest, smiling nastily. Sausage Man screamed abuse, said dog was dangerous and should be shot. I called the police who arrived quickly and took the chap into custody. Apparently a frequent flasher, police congratulated me and GSD for doing a useful citizen's arrest.

@EllieBeast having never heard of a GLP until you're lot I too would have guessed Eric was some sort of baby spaniel! Sorry, it's the perfect beachy waves in his ears.

Absolutely 100% totally understandable 😊
Now he’s growing his legs a bit he’s looking a bit less spaniely, but still closer to them than most other breeds at this point!
It’s lovely having a breed that’s a bit different- it’s a fabulous conversation starter 😁

And here I am more than once being told my apricot poodle was definitely an afghan hound….

or being asked when walking my two spayed girls” if they would be bred from?”When told they were both spayed, they repeated the question ,” but would they be having puppies?” ” Not any time soon love”.

We need more pics, @Bellasophia ! 😍

A few people have said that my old lad is my younger lad’s mum. I can only think it’s because he’s smaller and dark, as I don’t think he looks like a girl at all!View attachment 108399

To be fair, we had that comment every time we’ve got puppies and weve got the adult dog too. People assume it when you have the same breed.

Someone once asked my father if his dog was a beagle.

The same year this happened

On what planet was that person?! 🤣

Pip- I’m constantly asked whether it’s whippet or Greyhound that she’s crossed with. People often don’t believe me when I say she’s purebred Damnation 😂

Ivy and Erik- constantly mistaken for spaniels, but I can’t blame anyone for that. Not many of the general public have seen/can identify a GLP- especially not a baby one! (Sorry- any excuse for a photo dump 😂)

A child once asked if Bear was a Dalmatian. I mean, he’s got lots of spots!

To be fair, looking at your two, I’d definitely think spaniel of some sort. There are 2 identical short haired pointers at the park, so I’d be really confused if I saw yours and was told they’re also pointers! 🤪 (I’m easily confused!)

I’m sure I’ve mentioned this on here before, taking Bear to the emergency vet one Christmas Eve when he’d sliced open a pad and the vet heaved him up onto the table, telling me what a big lad he was for a cocker, all 25kg of him! 🤣🙈

Yes definitely! I complimented someone's IWS a few months back and he just said 'oh thank god I really thought you were going to call him a poodle' and then we proceeded to have a nice chat about IWS. I love when people are up for having a chat about their dogs, but it's so funny, and confusing (like CT said) to me how yours are pointers and this is (half) a pointer. I love the variations they come in 😍

I nearly fall over when I (rarely!) meet a stranger who knows what the GLPs are! I love it, there’s nothing I enjoy talking about more than my dogs 😊

Your girl is absolutely beautiful, and she’s a very lucky girl to have landed on her feet with you!

At our HPR gundog club I’m always amazed by the variation in the breeds all develop to do the same job. It’s fascinating!

I don’t blame you at all, we love it when people ask us about them 😊 Ivy is quite small for a GLP, but Erik is likely to be a big lad so will be less likely to be mistaken for a spaniel when fully grown I should think.
Unfortunately there are only 200-250 of them in the country, which is why so few people have seen them. We’re doing our best to spread the word though, they’re fabulous dogs!

I would have known they weren’t spaniel but would probably have wondered if Munsterlanders came in liver…

I only know as the local trainer breeds them and recommends where I work as a place to stay for his training courses. The owners are always suitably gratified when you know 😂

Manchesters are either doberman puppies or less commonly minpins. Very rarely does anyone get the ID correct
I wouldn’t have known but for the fact I’m fb friends with a lady from an old yard who it turns out shows them. I see her photos so looked them up. I really like them!

No one ever knows what my dog is (a phalene) because to be fair, there’s not a lot of them about. I just say papillon for simplicity. We get cavalier, cocker spaniel or chihuahua generally.

You’d be very close! The Munsterlander and GLP were once the same breed. The GLP officionados decided that the black and white colour was unsatisfactory and A few hundred years ago they separated off into their own breed.

There are quite a few differences between the breeds these days, not just the colour- but they came from the same origins 😊
