Typically, been building up to my ODE for ages, and now neddy develops a nasty cough.

A gut wrenching, rattling, chesty, farts at the same time kinda cough. It takes over his whole body as soon as he trots when ridden.

He even gave himself a nosebleed after a big coughing, snorting, blowing fit.

I have the vet coming out tomorrow.

Couple of yard chums say he'll need antibiotics.

At first when it was just a tickle of a cough I thought it was the hay or perhaps even his deep littered bed (so I gutted that and disinfected his stable) but it hasn't helped and in fact its got worse, and quite quickly, so I have called the vet.

What do you think? Chest infection? Bronchitis?

I am more than happy to forgo my ODE this weekend (and will follow the vets advice), but just a bit concerned about this awful hacking nasty cough.

Any ideas?

My boy had this a couple of weeks ago, he was also coughing up white flem. I took him to the vet and they said it was an allergic cough and gave him a steroid jab and some ventipulmin. He had a quiet few days then worked as normal. He did an unaffiliated ODE yesterday and won it!! He is only coughing once or twice when i first get on him and the vet said that is fine. I think it depends if there is any muck being coughed up or snotty nose. If it is yellow or green it is more likely to be an infection and need antibiotics. you are doing the right thing getting the vet. Better to catch it early.

Could be anything!! Not much you can do til you find out what the vet says but realistically your horse will still have a cough at the time of your ODE. I would be utterly livid if someone was riding around my horse with a coughing horse (and would say so, most likely upsetting the person) - its really not fair on the other competitors.

even if it is just dust it is affecting the lung capacity which is somewhat unfair on the horse. There will be other ODE's, not worth risking it!!

Just making sure!!! You would be amazed how often people aren't so responsible!! (plus if you withdraw now you may get some cash back!)

If you are soaking hay and using dust free bedding until the vet has been there is not much more you can do.

Ahh poor troy! Like said above, not much you can do til the vet comes out - who is coming? Re the ODE, might be safest to jack it in, especially with strangles not a million miles away at Wellington people are pretty paranoid about anything coughing these days. Although maybe wait til tomorrow to speak to vet - pretty sure SB won't do refunds, my friend got a vets cert for their XC the other week and they said still no refund after closing date?
Hope he feels better soon!!

Well it would be better to lose money and make sure he is ok.

Though being as I have been a loyal customer of their's for year's you'd hope they'd be a bit kinder to me! I can always vote with my feet I guess.

That's nearly £40 down the swanny that I could put towards my vet bill! Arrghhhh.

ETA - their schedule says no refunds after closing date - oh well.

Yeah, we do lots of entries there, Nic regularly enters two or three horses at a time, but they wouldn't give her anything back. They also wouldn't let someone go in her place, which seemed a bit petty to me as there wasn't a wait list for the event or anything so that ended up just being a gap, which could have been filled with no extra work for them at all!

My boy had a nasty chesty cough in 2006 that gave him a nose bleed. Took him to the vets were the shoved a scope down his nose to check for blockages but nothing was found.

In the end I was told to give him ventipulmin and another supplement, to keep him in light work (walking hacks) to help clear his chest, and to turn him out 24/7 to keep him away from dust. It took 6 weeks to clear up.
