Well as of last night he is officaly called "The horrid one" again. He nearly gave me heartfailer last night.

I got back from work and it was starting to rain so I thought I would give him a quick lunge.
He came in from the field normal.
He went for me while I was putting his roller on (this is normal)
and he walked to the school normaly.

But I took him in to lunge him sent him out on the circle and he got down to roll. I wasn't massively worried as he sometimes does that anyway. I made him get up and tried to send him out again and he just layed back down again. But this time he didn't roll he just layed there. Everytime I tried to make him get up he just went flat out. Then I would realy try to get him up and he would sit up on his bum, put his head on his front leg, groan and would slide his front legs down so he was layed back down with his front legs out in front of him  My head went into panic mode. I made him get up and everytime I did he just got back down again.
By now I was in full panic mode and rang my OH. He told me not to panic Herbs was prob just taking the Pee. He would folow me quite happily round the arena but as soon as I tried to lunge again he would just lie down.
I took him for a walk up the track inhand to see how he was out and he was his normal self, bright and alert. On the way back I climed onto him bareback to see what he thought about having a rider on and again he was normal. So then I rode him in the school bareback in walk, trot and canter,
Yes you guessed it all normal.
He obviously desided to stage a sit in as he didn't want to lunge ;) :p  and atleast he's not refusing to lunge by trying to kill me like he did when I first got him. ;)
He's such a special little pony. It's a good job I love him realy isn't it  :D :D :D

LOL.... Laura he's so funny!!!

I'd loved to have seen Herb's protest... classic. Wonder what made him think of that...?

What a naughty but very very clever pony !! probably has an IQ equivalent to Einstein or something. maybe you should do some parelli circus tricks with him sounds like he would be good !!! haha (oooopps did I have a pop at parellli !)

Glad I can give you all some entertainment

Only kidding he makes me laugh to. Once I knew there wasn't something seriously wrong with him. ;) :D :D

I will try again next week. I realy wish I had my camera out as it was so funny. I'll try to video next time but I bet if I have my camera out he'll lunge like a pro  If I do get some fottage of him doing it I'll post it on here for all to laugh at :p :D :D

LOL!

I do love Herbie. He's such a character, and so clever! I hope for your sake he decides that that trick is not worth repeating, you must have been so worried... but if he does it again, PLEASE get a video. :D

Classic did make me chuckle, would have worried the life out of me also until I knew nothing was wrong, what a character :)

Naughty herbs! It is so horrible when you think your friend is ill like that, very glad that it isn't anything to do with his health. What a clever and naughty man though!!

Hmmm I'm just not convinced it wasn't spasmodic colic and his being okay/not okay wasn't just coincidentally timed with you going out for the walk etc, the symptoms would fit it. :(

Having said that I am acutely aware of how bright the little darlings are and am not disputing the possibility that he has learnt that he can get out of work by lying down. God knows I've known some highly creative ponies in my time, and embarrasingly my instructor has said to me on more than one occasion "what's he doing NOW? I've never seen any horse do that as an evasion before!" :o

I can't help but feel that if it is a behavioural issue, perhaps you should be doing your best to prevent him from getting down in the first place next time, rather than taking photos or videos.

Apologies for being all serious on a light hearted post. Hopefully you are well aware of all of the above and my comments are redundant ;)

Must be something to do with the name 'Herbie'!! My friend's lovely Sec A of same name was sharing our field over the summer and daughter was riding him - he also has the cheekiest character I think I've ever met in a pony..totally loveable though!!!

We had a sec a that used to lie down when he didn't want to work.... but he would do it when my little girl was riding him. Didn't roll or anything (thankgod!!) but so naughty! :(

Thanks everyone. He is such a little charector bless him and he never fails to make me laugh. :D I just love this little guy soooooooooo much.

Naturally no need to appologise. There was nothing wrong with him though I can assure you. I did wonder if there was at first but he's just a cheeky pony who's never realy liked lunging. I have taken a video of him doing it but will now take some time off from lunging as he realy dosn't like it. He's fine to ride and seems to be enjoying it now. I don't want to start an argument with him now over an issue that isn't realy that important (In my eyes anyway ;) ) I know loads of horses that don't lunge. I'll focas on the riding as I don't want to ruin all my hard work in that area and break our bond over lunging. Maybe after a break from it he'll come back and be fine with it again. :)

Fany won't lunge either, just stands and looks at you.As you say no point in starting an argument with them, after all how the hell could you force on, even if you wanted to? Also agree about the bond, no point in losing trust.

He sounds a character. You should record him and send it into FUNNIEST VIDEOS lol (whatever its called). I think its lovely he has a nice character and you love him so.

FDC I don't think you could force him on, as the video shows when you try thats when he lies down  I also don't want to force the issue to much and end up right back at square one where he was dangourous to lunge due to agression :( it actualy makes a nice change for him to lie down instead of trying to kick my head in. Atleast he doesn't want to kill me anymore even if he still doesn't want to do the work ;) :D

sharon1959 full of Charactor now thats one way to descibe Herbie. ;)

haha the pony I learnt to ride on when i was very small used to sit down (like the pony in Naturally's avatar) when he didn't want to do something.
