I've just done a really silly thing

I've just been to do final stable check after dinner. I skip out, top up haynets and give everyone treats, with my own horse getting a final treat as the hay barn key lives on a hook in his stable. After skipping out, before I lock up I sit outside and have a cigarette. I am always very aware of fire risk, so nub it out in a tub of water then put it in the skip bucket. Tonight I had a handful of treats, plus key all in the same hand with three dogs following (hoping I would drop one) I hung the key up then gave Barney his final treat. He made a right meal of it chomping and slurping and I thought he doesn't normally even bother chewing them. One swallow and he's back looking for more. Then I realised I had given him the nub end in with the treats

God, I feel awful. I watched him afterwards and he went back to eat his haylage. You don't think it will get stuck do you or even worse he will be demanding 20 superkings menthol when I go up the shops

Just the one off it should be ok, make sure it never ever happens again
However are you on a livery yard? It surprises me you're allowed to smoke outside the stables
I'm prepared to sound really stupid but surely passive smoking could effect horses like it does humans??

Should be ok.Actually thought you were going to say he'd eaten a whole packet.
I have a ciggie outside as well after finished - not near stables or hay etc.OP said she goes outside for cig and is extra careful and doesn't just toss end.I used to go home with a few in my pockets as didn't want to just throw them just in case weren't out properly plus makes a mess
I go nuts at mate cos if raining she will stand just inside barn to smoke which is a big no no.

Years ago, I was at a yard on Dartmoor and we had an arab there that used to steal cigarettes if he had the chance, his owner used to give him one a day, I wonder if she knew that nicotine is poisonous to horses?
Trivia here, did you know that the plant, Horsetail, also contains traces of nicotine?

Stop smoking or you will look forward to a slow death from lung cancer caused by smoking, and that's the reality cigarette.CONTAINS 4,000 TOXIC CHEMICALS.
Why do it.Poor horse.
,

tobacco will not harm your horse.not so sure about the dog end though as that will have more chemicals in it,but I'm sure one will not have done him any harm. Tobacco is actually a natural wormer for horses and they will choose to eat it in the wild to do just that.

my friends pony when we were young was being abnormally silent n good so we walked over to see what she was up to & she`d pinched my friends bacy & was was chewing away !

I wouldn't worry, it'll come out one way or another. IMO its up to you what you do at your yard, smoking or otherwise and I'm sure you are aware of the risks. No doubt you won't do this same thing again though!

My goodness.. some people have zero sense of humour! Think how much crap all our horses will have eaten in the field, grazing at shows etc... i bet they've all eaten a hundred cigarette butts each

I sure he'll be fine

If you want a ciggy after your chores are done, go ahead and enjoy it.

I remember when I was a child (many years ago) my riding instructor always had a ciggy on the go in the reception area!

I was hoping for advice on how to deal with smoking horses...

Fat Cob is a chav. Now she's pregnant, living inside all day and doing eff all, she keeps trying to steal ciggies... (she's got the stable next to the barn door, so she sees everyone smoking!)

She always HAS tried stealing smokes, she has a very pressing "if you have it, I want it" need. But the smoking IS a problem...

I keep telling her, no smokes whilst you're pregnant! Smoking hurts your baby! But no, she wants a damn smoke!

Even had the discussion the other night - if she WANTS cigarettes, are we breaching her animal rights by not giving them to her?

My old horse nearly mugged a chap at a show when the guy was unwrapping the plastic off a packet of cigarettes - horse heard wrinkly paper sound and thought polo mints....and no I didn't know the guy. Very embarassing.

I too smoke outside my stable and as long as the yard allows it, I'll carry on doing it too!!

But no, I doubt your horse will suffer because of one ciggie butt....

This had me LOL...I reck if a problem arises you could start him off on Lights and cut the Supersize out...goes off humming *I'd do anything for you dear anything*

I doubt your horse will come to any harm off one

But having watched a stable burn to the ground (luckily a single one away from the others) and so having to evacuate 30 horses, because someone was smoking on a yard... i wouldn't say i find the Op's post funny. It only takes one little whisp of hay or straw etc to catch and lets face it yards are so full of things to catch fire blowing around. I've never been on a yard where smoking is allowed (apart from within a brew room etc) and i would be unhappy if anyone was.

I didn't know I was going to cause such a stir. It is my own yard. I smoke two maybe three cigarettes a day. When I said I sit outside and have a cigarette, I mean I sit over by my husbands workshop well away from the stables. I don't like nub ends all over the floor so bring cigarette back to water tub to stub out. I have had horses for over 45 years and so far have not had one single fire!

When I said I sat outside and had a cigarette, I sit by my husbands workshop, nowhere near the stables. I don't like nub ends all over so I take it to douse in bucket of water and put it in an aluminium skip. I have had horses for over 45 years and not had one fire. As per normal I was trying to lock up, give out treats, hang the key up and not fall over the dogs. Some people really do need to lighten up. I am sorry I am not perfect but then I never profess to be!
