What we know:

She was turned in to the pound in Ireland when she was just 6 weeks old - rescued, transported to England and we adopted her when she was about 10 weeks old. We think there's collie in there (she's the right size and shape) and possibly some springer (she's got a very springer temperament and and has the right shape paws, spotty belly/paws/nose/legs and the telltale springer spot, plus she has a very keen nose and a very soft mouth), but her ginger eyebrows and the shape of her face make us think there's something else in there . . . jrt? hound?

What do you think?

Thanks in advance.

Well what we do know is shes lovely, I would hazard a guess Collie x JR, dont see spaniel in there.

Oddly enough "Lovely" was the name her foster Mum gave her - so suits her temperament - we call her the "issueless dog." She has neither a collie nor jrt temperament (although I don't doubt there could be either in there - particularly collie) - she's very, very soft and gentle and very soppy - very unlike our (known) collie/jrt cross. She's also very much more scent driven than most collies I know . . . she can find ANYthing.

Thanks :).

P

She looks quite collie-ish in profile but straight on looks more terrieristy.

She's very cute whatever make she is! One of our previous border collies had the brown eyebrows :)

I agree that she looks like a terrierist - thing is she just doesn't have the temperament at all . . . she's so unlike our collie/jrt boy (who is ALL terrierist) that it makes me wonder what else could be in there?

P

Collie/JRT/Australian sheppard dog? (I think - one won crufts a few years ago??) Can't see much springer in her - maybe a teeny tiny bit!
She is so very sweet looking - totally lovely!!

JRT x Collie

My JRT has a spotty belly/paws/legs and ginger eyebrows and cheek bones :)

Thats the thing with mixes. They may take on characteristics from one breed, both or none.

Vet nurse opionin!!.... another vote for the JRT x Collie . Cant really see much spaniel in there.. they are normally kind enough to pass on their ears! Lovely dog pretty as a picture :-) xx

vid of my brothers Smooth Collie with my naughty boy ( ;) ) right at the end she's in profile and I can see the similarity.

Looks very Border Collie, if not pure, then at least 3/4, with maybe a bit of JRT. How big is she?

She's not very big . . . very, very slight (stiff wind would blow her over, whereas our (known) jrt/collie boy is much sturdier), very long tail (it's as long as her body) and is about the height of a very small collie or a rather tall beagle. Also, she's not double-coated like our boy . . . she has long hairs but her coat isn't thick and there's no downy undercoat. Coat on her body is quite wiry but the coat on her head is very, very soft and short. She does have the distinctive collie "ruff" but it's very, very slight.

I know I've said this before (and I recognize that all mixes and purebreds come to that are different) but in terms of temperament she's nothing at all like our other dog (and we know what his parentage is b/c his parents were known to the shelter and they rehomed his mother). Where he's very typical of both breeds - highly-strung, territorial, protective, prone to herding, neurotic and not popular with other dogs, she is the exact opposite - easy going, laid back, open, friendly, happy . . . I can take her anywhere!

Oh wow - see what you mean by smooth collie! We saw someone with the absolute spit of Dinks at Burghley last weekend - just much bigger with a very hound-like face . . . everything was the same right down to the length of the tail, all the markings and the diamond-shaped dot on the head . . . they said he was a smooth collie crossed with a fox hound.

P

Just adding . . . she doesn't do the collie "stalk" thing either . . . it's obvious there's collie in there (plain as the nose on my face in fact) but what puzzles me is what else is in there that counteracts all the worst things about collies (and I love collies but so get that they can be a challenge to bring up "right").

P

Smooth and rough collies are very very different temperament wise to borders.

Aaaaaaaah - you mean lassie-type dogs! Pls excuse my ignorance, lol! She's not as pointy in the face as a rough/smooth collie and she's very tiny (although that could certainly be the jrt). Heading off to read up about smooth collies . . .

P

Oh, and I should add that she has very unusual coloured eyes for either a collie or (possibly) a jrt . . . her eyes are hazel, almost green and quite large for her face.

Some sort of collie cross :p don't forget she could have been outcrossed and crossed back in again. I wouldn't try and overthink it, there's no real way of finding out for sure, you could do one of those DNA test things but not sure how reliable they are, enjoy her :)
As mentioned, breed traits happen sometimes, other times they don't, in purebreeds and crossbreeds and my OH's JRT does have similar facial markings (and ears :p)
I like her little 'dot' :)

I know - I'm a tad obsessive ;). And I like her dot too.

how tall is she compared to another breed?

My brothers Smooth collie is prob the height of a standard lab. More petite though. She has a very gentle nature and they are far less bonkers than a border collie!!!!

I don't think she's a pure smooth, but that profile really reminded me of them

There's def collie in there and something a bit smaller. Not all collie's are bonkers there are the odd few who are laid back! Plus mine was top notch at scent work. Either way she's unique and lovely with it so she's taken the nice bits of a few to make the fantastic girl that she is!

She's very petite . . . defo smaller than a lab, more like a small collie or a large beagle . . . it's funny but now smooth collie has been mentioned she looks rather alot like one . . . she/s more petite and her face isn't quite so pointy (although she does have the more prominent upper jaw and slimline nose), plus she has huuuuuge ears for her frame which you don't see until they stand upright when she looks like a bat (I'll try and get a picture) . . . her ears are almost out of proportion to her head/face and they are "stiffer" and more solid than our collie/jrt boy.

She does have a very soft nature . . . and I wouldn't call her "bonkers" but I would certainly describe her as a clown . . . we often find her on her back playing with something between her front paws. She is also very eager to please/loves people and praise and, as I said before, she also has a very soft mouth . . . she is the most trusting dog I know.

I guess we should just love her for the cute doglet she is? ;)

Border Collies come in smooth coat too, this is my Teagan, pedigree Border Collie, registered with the ISDS and KC.

My Border Collies are quite petite, they range in size from 18" - 19.5" and weigh between 12.5 kgs - 17 kgs. Also, I have 1 green eyed BC, 1 with greeny/browny coloured eyes and 2 with light brown all pedigree KC registered Border Collies.

Id be willing to place a bet on the collie side of things the first pic is very sheepdog like.
Id even he tempted to say theres more than a half blood of collie. There are plenty of compact tricoloured smooth sheepdogs around and she has that profile.

Some sort of terrier as well id say.
Jrtxcollie is a very common accidental cross over here as both breeds are very popular as farm dogs and pets.

I dont see any springer in her im afraid or hound.

Australian cattle dogs would not be very common in Ireland.

Any idea what part of Ireland she came from?or the name of the pound?or the rescue she came with? different areas tend to have different common crosses.Hunting country would increase the likelihood of hound potential.
