I was told last week that for a rearing horse you should break an egg on its head so it thinks it's bleeding and go back down! I've luckily not encountered a rearer lately and don't tend to hack with eggs in my pocket (!) but just wondered if anyone had tried this and it had worked or not?

Also, any other 'old wives' tales' (or horse's tails pahahaha :D) that you know of from the horsey world and whether or not you have tried them!

I've heard that a gorse sprig in the manger of a picky eater, can encourage the horse to eat up. Never tried it.:p

Also that a holly bough hung up in a barn can rid the occupants of ringworm. Don't know if that works for horses though, seems to work for calves.

Ha ha! I've heard this as well but it seems to me that if you are able to keep a raw egg intact while riding a lively horse, and then succeed in breaking it over the horse's head when it goes up, you probably work in a circus anyway, in which case the rearing would just be part of the act!

Good luck if you try it though!

Both sounds interesting! If it works for calves I suspect it may work for horses too.

Lol! I know, I'm not sure I would have the presence of mind whilst in the middle of a rear to fetch a well concealed egg from my pocket! :/

Never buy the first horse you see- done it 4 times now and each pony/horse has been great and exactly what I needed at that time.

White hooves are weaker than black- never noticed a difference.

Horses with Prophets thumb marks are faster than usual- my old thoroughbred had 2, was fast, but not that fast.

Our yard manager said she did that and spent a week getting egg out of her rearing pony's mane..

what about the gypsy thing of putting a horse tail hair down the middle of a carrot to worm it?

An old cure for mud fever, ask a gentleman friend to pee on the affected area? Never tried it as I cant find a willing 'gentleman' to give it a go for me!:D

Not sure if peeing in a bucket and sloshing my own stuff around the poor horse would also be worth a try!:o

Lol, these are all great! Although hopefully we won't all start trying them all at once or our equine friends may think we've gone bonkers... :D

I was told by the ancient livery yard owner to do that on a cut on my hand and I did - it worked! So many face creams and stuff have urea in them - that's just wee!

I've heard such things before as well! Not the same, but my mum always used to tell me to spit on cuts like 'animals lick their wounds.'

My very accurate knowledge acquired from watching 90s' sitcoms also tells me that weeing on a jellyfish sting is extremely effective!

My friend tried the egg thing once. Didn't cure it!

I can actually see that the urine thing might work. Cider vinegar in dilution does so I can imagine urine would help too.

Biggest old wives tale:

Wall eyed horses have a mean streak! I've never met a bad one.

I heard that a horse with all 4 white socks is supposed to be bad luck! not sure how much of that is true as I have a horse with black legs! haha! ;)

Are you refering to the saying

Four white feet send him far away
Three white feet keep him not a day
Two white feet give him to a friend
One white foot keep until the end

I know we all joke that Chestnut mares are nutters, but when I told a woman I knew with horses I was going to view one, she turned around and completely seriously told me it'd be the 'biggest mistake of my life' and that even without meeting the horse she can tell me it's dangerous. She also said that if I was her daughter I wouldn't be allowed to even go and see it... righttt, I'm glad I'm not your daughter :D

Right ok, :p did she look down at herself as a foal and think 'excellent. I'm chestnut, I better start being a little sh**'??

She was clearly a gingerist! I've known and loved about 5 chestnut mares in my time and only one was an out and out nutcase so the stats speak for themselves ;)

Isn't changing their name bad luck as well?! well I have a fingers crossed for you! :p

Yep, it's definitely thought to be bad luck! He's 13 as well :D

Oh well, I passed my driving test and moved house on Friday the 13th (yes, I did both on the same day!) so I'm not into all that superstition!
