hey everyone,

has anybody else had a knee injury from riding? 6 years ago, i fell off my horse and twisted my leg backwards, damaging the ligaments/tendons. [hamstring injury]. the hospital said that the injury wasn't debilitating but it was. about 2/3 years later, i fell off another horse (well, it was a hasty dismount as the horse got down to roll with me, and i wasn't quick enough... again twisting my knee.) again, the hospital didn't think there was a big issue and simply gave me co-codamol and told me not to ride horses as this was the problem!

i've found that horse riding and bike riding help me with my knee, but its simple movements that cause the most pain... turning around on the spot, pausing too long while waiting to cross a road, getting out of bed awkwardly. for the past 2 years or so, if my leg seized up it was simply a case of popping it back into place.

however, yesterday i was leaving the yard, and my mum called me to come back as we had forgotten something. as i turned around on the spot my kneecap snapped out of place. since then, i've been in a lot of pain and just taking co-codamol. everytime i get in contact with the doctors about it, they say that the injury isn't bad and simply recommend physio. they refuse to investigate it further.

any advice, or similar stories?

hiya I know exactly how you feel I damaged my knee about 9 years ago popped my knee cap out riding my mare when she was younger, my doctors at the time was really good and 6 months after I hurt my knee they said the injury had caused early signs of osteoporosis which at 14 wasn't brilliant, my knee use to click and crunch everytime I turned or stood still to long, leaned on it etc they sent me for physio and said if after 6months of physio it wasn't any better they'd send me for keyhole surgery to get the lose fragments of bone removed from my knee. Unfortunately I moved away and my new doctor refused to have anything to do with it and said you'll just have to put up with it and take painkillers they wouldn't even consider the surgery because they said I was young it'll be fine even now at 23 they still don't seem bothered so I just give up going to the doctors. I have days when it is agony to move my knee about but I do find a good knee support and the ibuprofen muscle gels do help not all the time but a lot of the time and my knee is always worse when the weathers cold or raining.

Hi, I broke my kneecap when I was 15, it was in plaster for ages, and stiff as a board after.

Mine also creaks and cracks, is weak and if I bend it then t is numb when I try to walk (think human flexion test!).

Courses of anti inflammatories have helped, rest, physio, chiro, cranio, strapping it up, massage, exercise......

I have avoided operations and steroid injections, but comfort myself that it has been slowly worsening from age 15 to 48, and hopefully will do a few more years yet, and if the worst comes to the worst I will have a new knee fitted!

There was a good book I read, I think it was called "Heal your own knees" or something, from Amazon, with exercises to strengthen around the knee. I think it cost less than a tenner, and has been as good as anything.

Sounds like you might be suffering from a torn cartilage, that you sustained in the original injury. The torn piece then keeps getting caught in the joint, so you can't bend or straighten it properly. It is really painful and debilitating but it comes and goes. If it goes unresolved you will have problems later on. Keyhole surgery can cure this completely, you need to insist that your GP refers you to a surgeon. You will need an MRI scan to correctly diagnose it. I have had similar problems with both knees and had to be very firm to get the referral as my GP was similarly reluctant.

I have suffered with my knees for many years. Feeling like the knee has popped out if I twist quickly or bend wrong (also makes a loud click/crunch noise) immediately feel extremely nauseous and lightheaded then the knee is tender for a few days.
I had key hole surgery about 7 years ago to suck out all the loose cartilage and was diagnosed with chondromalacia patella. I must admit I don't feel the op helped and I actually pulled my hamstring afterwards when compensating for my knee.
I am now very stiff in the morning, can struggle to walk down the stairs in the morning and at times in trot it can ache to the point I want to cry.
I have too found horseriding and cycling helps, as it builds the muscles to support the knee.
I can put up with the constant creaking, clicking and stiffness at the moment but I will eventually request a referral from my GP but I was warned if I had too many key hole operations I would eventually require a knee replacement, not a nice thought at 32!

Thanks for the replies and advice everyone!

It's reassuring to know that this affects more people than I thought (although a shame). I also have the problem of cracking/creaking, and it's so embarrassing sometimes. I'll be ringing the doctors tomorrow morning (day off work), although I don't know whether I'll get anywhere. We can only hope. I don't know if all doctors surgeries are the same, but when I ring up at opening time (8AM) the appointments are all taken! Either that's the genuine truth or they don't deem my problem "problematic enough" to be seen. I take co-codamol(not sure how to spell it, sorry) which makes me very drowsy.

In my job I sit down a lot but always make sure to take breaks so it doesn't lock up too much, although right now it's painful to keep it in one position for too long. xx

good news, managed to get a doctor's appointment (after an argument with the receptionist) and saw a new doctor, who immediately said "ah this is an unhappy knee" and is scheduling an MRI scan for a months time. my knee is swelling up more and more though, so kind of worried.

I broke my femur in 2014 summer and was in plaster for 8 weeks. The break was low down on my femur and went slightly over my knee. It was caused by my horse rearing and falling, I didn't jump off quick enough and leg was caught somewhere (Still don't know where) anyhow, they decided not to operate even though it was displaced. It still doesn't feel right and becomes very stiff with too much use, sometimes painful. However, painkillers usually relieves this pain.

I have also dislocated my other knee by getting into bed.. get in with the leg in crossed position. However.. I have managed to dislocate it and I put it back in myself (probably not my best idea?!) never went to doctor. Also causes stiffness sometimes. Yesterday, it came out of place but not enough to lock out of place and went back in on its own.. it nearly made me physically sick.

My advice is when they get stiff or painful put knee braces on and rest. Otherwise you'll aggravate it - I'm only young as well so I have plenty more years with these awful knees.

Sounds like you need more investigation after yesterday as you could have done more damage.
But don't underestimate how much a chiropractor can help.
I had ultra sound, acupuncture and wore some of that funny tape!
It really helped!
Yes my need is weaker and I some situations I get pain but managing it correctly really helps.

Last November I broke the middle bone of my ring finger vertically (twisted holding a lead role and splintered up the middle) after A few days went to the Hospital where I had an X-ray and told it was broken and splinted straight, 1 week late I go back to see a Dr who wouldn't believe me when I told him what happened or that I hadn't seen a Dr yet as it should never have been set straight. 4 weeks in a 90 degree splint and a couple X-rays and they took it off for a month after seeing a hand specialist before being sent to physio where they tried to force it straight and gave me putty to get strength and movement etc, before having it forced straight I could bend it pretty well now after I can barely bend it as forcing it straight moved the bone to sit in a different place which now cuts the blood supply off to my finger when I bend it, am pretty much on constant pain and recent I've noticed my little finger bends with a side say movement which I thinl means my tendons are screwed aswell. I plan on going back to my Dr in November so that can pull the it's not healed yet stuff but reading these doesn't fill me with much hope 😞
