Mine was 18, did exactly what I wanted, side saddle and dressage, was quite quirky but stunning,. Sadly only had him for 6 years but only regret was I did not find him sooner.

17 when I bought him but had him on loan for 6 months before that. Could never have afforded him in his younger years, he does everything.
He is absolutely awesome and I hope to have many many years to come.

7 for the first one, 4 almost 5 for the second.
I wouldn't have an issue taking on something older though.
I have a companion in his early twenties on loan though. He's bright as a button, throws his weight around quite happily if given the opportunity and is pretty sound. Awful conformation, fatter than he should be and occasionally a bit stiff if he's laid down overnight but happy and well in himself and does the job he needs to do! So it wouldn't bother me if he was 5 or 25 tbh.

15, I think (might have been 14). He was a PSG schoolmaster and was absolutely wonderful at teaching people to do flying changes and piaffe, etc. Had him well into his 20's.

I shared my first horse, a Belgian warmblood, and then bought her at 18 when I was 28 - she gave me 8 wonderful years and was a perfect first horse as superb to hack alone and in a group, jumped well (had been a grade A show jumper and then had a couple of foals, nicely schooled and was a lovely person).

The only issue I had when I moved her to England was hacking on the "wrong" side of the road. She didn't like being a left hand drive horse!

21 I think, broodmare from stud closing down, who was related to some of mine and my friends ponies. It was a BOGOF as she produced a foal the following spring ?

17 but it wasn't straightforward. I'd shared / had him on loan for 4 years by this point and paid £5 for him. His owner was getting divorced and her husband was threatening nasty things as he insisted he owned him as he had paid for him 13 years previously. We suspected he was all talk but everything was in the wife's name, so to be on the safe side, I bought him, changed all the paperwork into my name and we moved him to a new yard. I was only 17 and to this day my mum and dad don't know he was legally mine! I kept him until he died aged 27. M & D still think I only ever had him on loan. I'm 42 now!

Nearly bought a 19 year old the other day but held off, thinking I don’t want 2 potential field ornaments in a few years.

À mate bought what she thought was a 12 year old, turns out it was at least 23 and didn’t live long after purchase. ?

23, blind in one eye, arthritic knees. Got her when I was 13, she was my first pony (followed by BBP) she taught me so much about the caring for a horse, putting welfare above childish desires to hurtle around. I don’t regret or resent it for a second. She died aged 39 with a mouthful of pear and me telling her how much I loved her.

16yo dressage schoolmaster, although I’d had him on loan for 3yrs by that point. He’s still my horse of a lifetime now.

A just turned 8 year old was the oldest I spent money on.

I have also loaned and been given horses in their 20's, but apart from the 8 yo, I have only ever bought yearlings.

Puzzle was supposed to be about 14/16, turned out to be early 20's with Squamous Cell Carcinoma, but I had 3 years of the most amazing safe, fun hacking, then he enjoyed a couple of years in retirement before his cancer took him ...... short time together but amazing. ?
