My old girl was 35 when I had to have her PTS in 2005. My moms old lad was 42 and died 5 days after my old girl from a heart attack but I was over very quickly and the vet said he would have just gone!! And we have Dreamer my sisters old pony who is 38 and she is still with us!! I feel a tough decision coming soon x
My old dear is 32. She retired the winter just gone and I dread doing the deed but the moment she asks it will be done. At the minute she looks awesome though! :-D
We looked after a cracking connie x, Midnight, who we rode until he was 30 and he then was riddled with arthiritus and collapes in the field and couldnt get up. He was PTS and buried there
Along with middy, there was a chestnut arab mare who mush have been knocking 48 we think, cant remember how she died, i think she naturally just went.
All the ponies at the riding school I worked at lived to very good ages...29 yr old TB, always had problem with her legs but was found 1 day with her hind legs 3 x normal size...PTS in the field straight away. 34 yr and 32 yr old PTS as one had lost the majority of his sight and the other was just too weak to get through another winter. 29 yr old arab died of colic, little new forest 28 yr old had enormous growth within her back end which grew within a couple of days and owner rightly didnt want to put her through tests etc so PTS whilst it wasn't causing any pain.
There's still a 26 and 27 yr old happily living a quiet life who both act as 5 yr old children when handled. Youngest was 23 when she had severe cushings laminitis (undiagnosed cushings till too late) and after 8 weeks of box rest, no improvement and very depressed pony she was PTS whilst being stuffed with carrots.
My horse was pts 7 weeks ago at the age of 32. She was a full TB, had an easy-ish life though. Never met a calmer more placid horse in my life. We found her down in the field one morning unable to get up. The vet thought she'd had a mini heart attack so we let her go.
This is the Venerable Betsy. We aren't sure exactly how old she is. We've had her for 26 years. She was my first proper pony after years of falling off shetlands. She still goes out now and again with my 3 year old niece on the lead rein. We think she's about 40. She's survived a trailer crash, liver disease and young daft geldings wanting to play. Totally hates having her mane pulled so it gets cut once a year. Grumpy old wotsit though!
Of course, this is how they used to snooze. Can't remember how many times we've had a knock on the door to say that Betsy's dead!
