Olympia jean francois pignon (sp???)

I want the shettie for Christmas, it's the cutest thing I have seen in a long time

When the horses come in, following him around like a dog would follow just blew me away. And the iron grey horse who took the middle spot made me laugh - bossy so and so

I couldn't see many signals at all so how he got them to go in 'opposite circles' (you know what I mean) is beyond me.
And yes, the grey shetland was the star as far as I'm concerned

As I said in the general olympia thread....brilliant. Although quite a few people in there had mixed views I can see where they are all coming from but even so for him to have trained those horses for a performance like that is truly amazing IMO.
Cannot beat the Spirit soundtrack either!

It's great circus entertainment but those horses looked very drilled and not at all happy in all sorts of ways.

It was like watching performing captive dolphins...it makes me want to cry and for all the wrong reasons!

Not for me.

Echo the poster about the Met police display - horses drilled, yes, but raring to go, ears pricked - all freely forwards and happy to do what they were being asked. Cut back to JFP and the only one that looked like he wanted to be there was the shetland.

I agree, Ihated it, made me feel very sad & uncomfortable. The horses all looked very sour & unhappy, agree with what the others said about body language. When he went near them, ears back, but I suppose having a lunge whip flicked at the tips of your ears is very painful. The little chestnut one refused to bow, & he really walloped it with the handle end of the lunge whip behind the knee. I don't know how he trains them & don't want to, thought it was very circusy & the horses really weren't enjoying it, unlike the Met.

Agree with Kizzywiz and others - I didn't like it at all. The body language of the horses didn't seem happy or relaxed. They were well trained, which I suppose has to be admired, but it made me very uncomfortable.

Met display was brilliant though - hope the 2 horses who crashed were ok (they seemed to be as they finished the display).

I agree. Watched him last night on the tv and have also seen him live. His performance is amazing but his horses never look happy and comfortable. The grey with the thin black mane had its ears back the whole time - that is not a happy horse. The only one that seemed ok was the Shetland. Different type of performance but I much prefer watching Lorenzo

Watching the video online

http://www.olympiahorseshow.com/ulympia.html

it just looked as if the horses were a) tucking their ears/heads out of the way of the whip and b) pulling faces at each other being so close. When they were just stood resting they had "happy" expressions, making me think they can't have been that badly treated.

I don't know. Amazing horsemanship, but I'd love to be a fly on the wall at his training yard at home, just to see what goes on behind the scenes to convince myself it was okay.

There are videos available of him training at home. He also explains that the horses treat him as their herd leader and react to him as horses do to each other when they get in each others' personal space. If you watch horses moving around together, they do actually react in this way.

Amazing, incredible performance, yet again made to sound otherwise by the HHO forum 'experts'.

I know two people who went on one of his courses last year. They came back astounded. They didn't expect to see a foal brought in, laid down and whipped, because "they all have to learn this don't they". It might explain why horses don't look happy to be with him.

Actually I never said I was an expert, I just said that I personally didn't enjoy it & the horses appeared sour & unhappy, unlike the met. Usually Munchkin I totally agree with your posts, especially the show jumping ones.
