Olympic horse owners neglected horses taken away

Nope, not controversial at all imo just sensible.

And what I really don't understand is this; ok, so most of those horses aren't going to be stars, but plenty of them probably could be sold to competent owners lower down the echelons of the horse world. But not if they're half starved as yearlings and grow up shonky. It doesn't really even make business sense. Cull the real dross, look after the rest and you've got more money in the kitty surely?!

No idea, tbh, what his business model is supposed to be, I know what it is - a shambles, but what it is supposed to be? Who knows. I think part of the problem might be that Poland is cheaper than Denmark, but not THAT much cheaper, and his idea of cost involved was unrealistic (that is being kind to him, really).

If you breed a lot of horses you have to be prepared to cull.
But I don't think it's the issue here it's unforgivable what's gone here.

Very!

The mind boggles though. Some of those horses in the video were (despite being emaciated) clearly nice enough for the average amateur and what ever people say there are plenty of amateurs/semi pro riders who can cope with a 'performance' horse. He's clearly a bloody idiot if he couldn't see the potential to make money from at least some of his 'sub standard (meaning olympic level ) foals

People are horrible and stupid :(

NO business model: it is substantially cheaper to both acquire land and keep horses in Poland, which is why Schockemuhle (sp?) purchased 1,000 acres and installed 700 broodmares. Perhaps this is what inspired the gentleman to do the same?

Possibly :) who knows? Land is cheaper as there is more of it, obviously, some feeds are cheaper, too, but strangely, there isn't much difference in price for farrier services between Poland and UK, wormers can actually be more expensive, not too sure how vet care compares nowadays, though.
And frankly, not even in Poland can you keep a horse well for £45 a month, which is what his budgeting allowance allegedly was.

One of the worst videos I've ever seen, really hope he is brought to justice although it's too late for some of those poor animals. I think it's even worse if they chose to feed the ones they thought were good quality and left the others to starve, if they had no use for them they should have been sold not just neglected it's not their fault they haven't made the grade and may well have had a use for someone else.

I would rather see a full knackermans lorry than what was on that video, dont care what people say in regards to PTS in this situ :( bullets are cheap, that to me is calculated and deliberate cruelty :(

I've just watched it. Totally horrendous. Those poor poor horses. I hope he and all those who allowed this to happen will rot in hell.

:( I wonder how many people on this board would have loved one of those horses. Maybe they werent the ones to be top level but as riding club horses they would still be special

I dont buy the £45 a month per horse, thats 2 big round bales of hay. While not enough to care for a horse 2 big round bales wouldnt result in horses in that state :(

You might not buy it, but the reality is, that a budget of 200 PLN a month has been allowed per horse, which was to include rent, staff wages, bills, feed, vet supplies and farriery. BTW, £45 buys much more than 2 big bales of hay in Poland, but not enough to run a stud well.

ah my error I miss read it as £45 a month just for feed not everything :( which I thought wasnt right as no way had those poor horses had £45 of feed. Wish I could take a lorry over

You seem to be privy to a lot more information than most ;)

That might be because I'm Polish? Have friends sort of involved there and can read Polish reports :)

Might be lol? In that case I do hope that you can help in any way you can, especially if you have inside information via your friends and it means bringing the person ultimately responsible (imo that would be the owner) towards prosecution. I don't think this is a Polish thing (my father was Polish), or a Denmark thing but a cruelty thing.
