On average how long do you leave new horses to settle in b4 riding?

I ride them day after arrival, no reason not to- best to establish a stable routine straight off and that includes exercise

The day after. Its tempting to leave it but I think particularly with a young horse you have to start as you mean to go on..

Im sore as i fell off a few days previous (different horse, refused jump) but im now sorer!

He napped towards the gate, forgot his brakes (or ignored them) and stopped suddenly, sending me out the back door.

My friend got on afterwards and walked him around and he was on his toes, but fine..

Hence why we thought perhaps he needs some time.
 
OH DEAR!! i feel for you.
i ride the day after they arrive as well - less time for the nerves to kick in!
i would keep trying, even if it's just at a standstill for a couple of times.

Hmm I can understand how that would be a bit unnerving.. is there someone who can help you ? Even if its just getting on board and someone leading you round ?
 
New horse and new yard.. hes on loan with me for two months to see how we go together... Not the best start!

Hes not on any hard feed yet either...

Hmmm, we've got two months together and if it doesnt work then he goes back unfort.

I have help, my friend was up today and jumped on after me and he was fine. (however, she is no where near as nervous as me so perhaps he felt it?)

we give our new arrivals a day or 2, then a lunge day, then a lunge and ride.

i get on the next day as long as i have a saddle that i know is a good fit on the horse.
is your horse in a different saddle to the one you tried him in? sometimes they can be trying to tell us something, very eloquently.
hope you're okay. i'd check saddle, and lunge him first too, to see what side of bed he got out of, personally!

was it the cob?
we have a mare with us who takes around 2 weeks to really settle, she's a complete cowbag until then. total different horse once she's settled. i'd def give any horse at least that long (unless it was really dangerous) to show it's true self.
ditto kerilli about getting saddle, teeth etc checked too

Having only had Drifter a week my experience was that he was quite wound up when he arrived so evening of first day I turned him out in the Arena to explore and spook without me. Day 2 Lunged first and sat on like a lemon for 5 minutes waiting to die. Day 3 did same in second school.

He is on NAF Pink Powders which are supposed to be brilliant for helping horses settle into new surroundings.

Now a week later I am embarrassed at how nervous I was and he is Brilliant and really chilled.

If Loan horse has you worried lunge before you ride just to see what side of bed he got out of. I have gone from the lungeing fro 30 mins or so to lungeing for 2 seconds to not bothering at all.
 
My teacher says at least a month. Feed them nothing but oats, hay and water and keep them inside to get used to the new stable. Then take them into the arena and hang on
