On average how long do you leave new horses to settle in b4 riding?

My teacher says at least a month. Feed them nothing but oats, hay and water and keep them inside to get used to the new stable. Then take them into the arena and hang on

Not sure it's great advice?

that's 1 way to teach the art of either falling off or staying on

I rode mine the day he came, he came in the morning and was only half an hour away.
And I figured best get him used to routine and as he wasnt bothered by new surroundings so thought lets take him out.

I know some might think I rushed it but he really isnt the type of horse to bother and it didnt do him any harm.

My friend got on her 5 year old the same day he arrived sat on him in the school whilst the herd were having a right hooley in the field next to him. He just pricked his ears bless him, where as my previous horse that was a different story - the less said about that the better

Maybe ask your friend to ride him tomorrow for a while then you get on once he's done some work and so is less fresh so should be easier for you. I would try to ride him regularly personally, especially if he is the type to get uptight, the more you do with him the quicker he'll learn to relax.

In respnse to original question, i normally give mine a full day to settle in, unless they're the sharp, energy filled type in which case I'll ride them the morning after arrival, don't want to give them time to build up loads of energy and then become too much of a handfull!
