Hello. Horse is barefoot went lame 2 weeks ago after a few steps end of one ride, fine next day ride again a few odd steps in walk, sound in trot and then lame on way home down hill. Dismounted and led. Slight medial (inside) pulse right fore above fetlock once stood at yard which Increases with rest disappears soon as moved. Turned out same afternoon comes in after hooning around (looked great in gallop:-() visibly lame once stood and whole of inside only right fore filled. Got vet next day as worried suspensory as has similar lameness last august same place same symptoms but was diagnosed as bruise. Returned to work ok at time vet was happy with feet but not overly impressed as on restricted turn out on fertilised grass.
Moved yards to normal grass horse out 10 to 12 hours a day no issues. Vet this time suggested abbess or bruise but could not find any sensitivity in any foot apart from a tiny bit in right heel around frog and said possibly because horses feet are much too strong along with immune system which keeps suppressing abcess bruise or blood blister? He is now out in boots and pads and on 1 danilon a day after a weeks poulticing bought nothing. Happily galloping around. Looks sound morning and night on hard in no boots in walk (not trotted) but still has this filled inside leg and pulse after standing and in the morning.... I am worried it is something more sinister but have no idea. Vet has ruled out all others but this is from same vets (not actual same vet )that wrote him off with navicular and said he could never be unshod. Please can someone try and help me? Thanks if you got to the end. :-)

Forgot to say horse same behaviour with out danilon !!

sounds like it could be an abcesss, my horse a couple of summers ago went on off lame and then suddenly one day is on 3 legs.

could you get a farrier/trimmer to go over the hoof with hoof testers again? it could be that its not quite ready to burst yet, I've heard of people whose horse has one brewing for months before it comes through.

Is danilon like bute? I only ask because I know "they" say to not give bute for an abscess because it's an anti inflammatory and you want to encourage it to come out not stay in.

Could you soak the hoof as well in hand hot water and epsom salt?

Thank you for replying. Only slight sensitivity at heel of frog no thrush whatso ever . I got a yard farrier to hoof test again (as stronger then me)before using danilon (yes like bute) after calling vet back when we decided not To continue poulticing. Horse would rather die then place foot in any kind I water tub, even one that's only very shallow (tub and water) also as only slight sensitivity is in heel behind frog I am not sure how helpful as frog already has been soaked for 6 days in poultice! I unfortunately trim myself when required although more shaping as self trims...I also agree with no danilon but if it a bruise and not an abcess it might help?? You can see why I am lost!

it's a tricky one, I guess if I were you and there were no improvement I would be going down the nerve block route.
Thanks a lot. Was hoping to avoid. I will wait it out a bit first as horse not visably lame when not on danilon at present but I think that may be next step although it will probably point at rear of hoof so back to square one! Oh to be rich and have monthly MRI's.

And a little bump just in case anyone else!

Has strain of the inside branch of the suspensory definitely been ruled out? By scan, or how???

Abscesses can brew for months, especially if suppressed by bute and/or antibiotics early on.

Is he lame on a soft surface and sounder on hard? That would often be the case with an abscess.

I asked vet to scan he said no need as absolutely not suspensory. No idea how he knows. He only squeezed all over, at time of his visit it was a real throbbing pulse. I don't consider anything ruled out but he does.

When symptoms first showed last august after nothing on poultice after 5 days he was buted and box rested (old fertilised grass yard) on vets advice for a week or so (I had to go away) I came back to sound horse so did not look further.

He has had odd pulse at times in same place and been off for a couple of days but not so consultantly as now.

Yes he looked worse on soft last time I jumped on him was last Sunday as looked good in field and on yard. Went lame in a few circuits but happy to move forwards regardless.

Did not danilon tonight.

Do I just wait and keep turning out?

He had less pulse tonight then yesterday but has had 4 sachets of danilon since Thursday night.

Thank you for replying.

Personally I would be insisting on a scan of the leg - my girl was very mildly lame, more off than lame but not imporving after several weeks of small field rest. I insisted she was scanned and the vet, as he was scanning, said 'there won't be any..' and tailed of as a huge 50% lesion showed up in her ddft - they didn't expect anything to show.

hi Archie sorry late reply , he was first lame in January , it was only when we neve blocked that it showed that it was in his foot , abcess happened a week ago but unsure if that was there all along or not , I hope u find out why yours is lame x feel free to ask any more questions x

Did your girls leg go down with turnout or even any movement? and I'm talking just a few strides down the yard makes any pulse go away and no filling.

Story tonight is after spending all day out and doing about 10 circuits in flat out gallop mostly (and I only saw about an half hour of his grazing today- other liveries had even more tales to tell I earlier - he was covered on sweat marks!!) of very very hilly field, he has just a tiny throb above fetlock- again medial side only after 2 hours standing was filling a little but only local to pulse area.

No danilon since sat morning. I am wonder If it is just an abcess I keep surpressing with danilon or even a bruise that is healing.

He looks 100 % sound in field and on yard.

I was planning on trying him in school Wednesday If resting pulse continues to decrease but part of me also wants scan but no vets few insurance so will only be able to afford ultrasound right. now which if it is ddft or other in hoof won't help, only MRI will. Do you think pulse and localised swelling Is indicative of area damaged as opposed to in hoof?

Vet was so adamant everything he could feel was good.

Really thanks for your opinion (s) I really really love this horse, between him and bloke is a no brainier ;-).
