Not on a main road, but if it was a quiet road and i could keep the correct level of control then i would. I once saw a girl riding a lovely horse whilest she was texting, i.e looking down and she went over a level crossing and was zig zaging all over the place i felt like say something, but i didn't. Luckily no trains were near by!
Cant stand it! Or cant understand it! Turn the phone off and enjoy being at one with your horse without the ties and contraptions of the 21st century!
Safety wise- I think it compares to driving whilst on the mobile. It is not necessarily you that would have the problem but what if someone came round the corner too fast and you had to get out of the way?
I have answered the phone hacking on the roads but only quiet roads on quiet horses. And I did ring someone today but when I was on a bridlepath on my own horse.

I admit to riding and being on the phone, not proud but i also do it in the car!! Slap wrists!!

Not bothered whether people do it when they are on their horse, so long as they are not doing it on a public road where their lack of thought could put their horse in danger.
There is no excuse for doing it in a car. At best you get a fine. At worst, kill someone.
Yes i have done it but didn have much choice 4 2 reasons,1 i have to keep my phone on me because of my daughter who has a condition which can be life threatening so if my phone rings i have to answer,i answered it once and it was my OH about our daughter whilst on the phone a stupid man in a car shouted out his car window, well to cut a long story short he was given a piece of our mind as he went down a dead end and we had family that lived down there he didn like horses that was why he shouted out .
I often read texts if my phone goes off in case it is important but will rarely reply, if on a quiet road I will often answer the phone depending who is calling but I take the risk that if my horse spooks I will drop/break my phone, my choice!!
Personally, i think it should be illegal, it's dangerous and not only endangers the horse and rider but other road or bridleway users. I assume that the same people who ride and use their mobile are the ones who don't wear reflective clothing or do their hats up.
There is a girl at my friends yard who is always on the phone or texting when riding and wonders why her horse has become dangerously spooky (d'oh, it's because she isn't riding him properly or aware from her surroundings). A week ago said horse knocked someone off their bike whilst the girl was texting, it's a shame she wasn't reported to the police or sued!
Mobile phones should only be carried by riders to use in an emergency.
Ok, i'll get off my soap box now
Are horses not subject to the Highway Code, or whatever the equivalent is? It's not legal to use a phone without a "hands free" unit whilst driving a car or riding a bike so surely the same rules apply? (Not that people necessarily obey the laws, but that's another topic.)
Not on the roads, that's one's own look out, surely?
I am guilty of answering the phone whilst hacking, but only on very quiet roads. Its kind of a case of "Hi am riding, ring back later, bye."
Only do it on the stallion I hack (he is bombproof, in every sense of the word) but I would never so it on my mare, very spooky!
Izzi
I always have my hands free set with me when out hacking, so if phone ring i can answer it and keep both hands on the reins, if i dont bring the hands free with me then i dont answer unless i'm somewhere safe to do so.
Out hacking take phone but it is switched off. As someone else said so nice to be away from the modern world for a while. Not sure about the safety element at shows but must admit was impressed at one of top show jumpers on phone whilst doing really good shoulder in warming up......
I have it switched on in case I need to use it in a hurry (it has a pin number to activate) but NEVER answer it whilst riding. I've told anyone who might try to ring me that they won't get an answer if I'm out. As I have to wear glasses to read, and I can't fit them under a crash hat, I couldn't see to ring or text anyone anyway!
Always take a phone when hacking purely for emergency reasons. You never know when an accident is lurking around a corner and you need emergency help. Also, we have a remote access gate and when there is power failure, we need to contact the grooms to unlock the gate so we can get back into the property.
I generally have my phone in the pocket of my breeches when schooling or jumping because I simply forget it is there, but I rarely answer it when riding.
Only had to do it once...took a chance at going for a hack with a friend when I was on call...sods law halfway round I get a phone call, which turned into 3. Always came to a halt and pulled in as much as possible and my friend blocked me just in case. Normally take a phone with me but only for safety...and is on vibrate just so I know if someone has tried to contact me....riding time is me a pony time....interrupt at your peril
Phone is on silent when I ride - Twiglet will often take offense at it ringing and use as an excuse to ping off - and wouldn't answer it whilst on roads.
Occasionally answer when schooling but mainly to say I'll call you back.
I do text off road, but only when it's safe to take a hand off the reins - which at the moment isn't often with my lovely boy!!!
One showjumper near us is constantly on the phone when she hacks. I think she probably finds hacking boring! Is annoying though because half the time she's totally oblivious to traffic.
I do answer my phone on a hack, but only on very quiet roads when there are no cars present or off road. Not for long periods though, generally to say I'm on the horse and I'll call you later. Though people usually know I'm on a horse due to all the clippoty clopping
Is good for contacting people though, like when the farmer's sheep have escaped again and we've herded them back in and he needs to come out and fix the fence.....
I'm sorry but i don't believe for a moment that everyone apart from my little self have halos over their heads and have never answered the phone whilst riding or in the car. I'm not saying its clever at all, i was just being honest.
