On the subject of pony squishing

[ QUOTE ]
Where has anyone said that?

People are not saying that all adults on ponies should buy a horse but the line must be drawn somewhere.

[/ QUOTE ]

ok..ok...no one has said that specifically, but I'd hazard a guess that the majority of adults on 14hh ponies may well weigh more than 9 stone. I agree a line needs to be drawn somewhere but a) it's different for every pony and b) 9 stone is a tiny amount really!!

I think rule of thumb if you have to ask then your too big!
Its a bit like if you have to ask the price you cant afford.

Only if i was to go looking at horse to buy or ride if i questioned my size then i'm probably too big.

[ QUOTE ]
Horses do come in all sizes, you know. Why not just get a nice big one?

[/ QUOTE ] I think you misunderstood the opening post. The OP was enquiring about riding her daughter's pony occasionally - she doesn't want to acquire another equine!

Sheltlands are more than capable of carrying adults as are most of our native breeds. They were bred for their ability to carry weight.

No wonder so many of our native breeds are dying out when people think they're only capable of being obease pets and kiddies plods.

Well you could turn that round - no wonder the native breeds are dying out when so many of our riders are obese or kids

Trolling, are we?

I hope so.

I used to ride an 11.2hh, very stocky Sec A scurry pony who was built like the proverbial and very fit. I was 10 stone, rode him 4-6 times a week for an hour or so, mostly fast work, and tbh I'll be damned if he even noticed I was there sometimes. And no, he never had back problems or fainted with exhaustion.
I'm about 9 1/2 stone now and my 14.2hh (in sig) could carry me and a friend, I reckon, at least up to 12 stone easily. 9 stone for a 14hh?! Get a grip, look at the definitions of how much the varying hunter weights can carry, bearing in mind it's supposed to be for hunting.

i ride a 13.2 welsh c x regularly.
I'm 5'1 and weigh just under 12 stone (im not happy about it and suffer from an ED before any1 jumps on me for being a fatty!)

He is more than capable of carrying me and i was heavier when i started rding him. His owners have no issue about putting my weight on him! I school and hack him and this weekend im having my first jumping sesh on the strong little bugger!

People forget horses and ponies are strong animals. Do people get this arsey about how much weight horses can pull? many people drive small ponies..

I disagree. The only reason that I have questioned whether or not I am too big for my 14.3 mare is people making me feel silly by making comments. Everybody is obsessed with the fact that lanky's like me (6ft) need a 17.2. I know that she is comfortable with me riding her so bollocks to whatever anyone else thinks!
grin.gif

oh and.. a friend of mine has a 16.3 hunter and it has carried me and her bareback (about 19 stone between us!! - i was alot thinner back then!) for a short time. She barely noticed the extra weight and did no more than a slow plod through some country lanes to get to the horse i was riding.

My friend was ok to put this weight on her mare as she regularly was borrowed by men to hunt who weighed a hefty amount!

Well considering a Trooper, saddle and equipment for a Lighthorseman was in excess of 20 stone and those Walers crossed hundreds of miles of desert on minimal feed and occasional water, I think a large % of horses will actually be fine with a large % of riders!
Some folks have gone a little soft!

I often ride smallish ponies to give em a "tune up" and they cope fine with a session...and i'm not light...with clothes on, which is how I prefer to ride
laugh.gif
, I'd break the 200lb mark!

[ QUOTE ]
I would say that for hacking work a couple of times a week then around 11 stone would be fine.

[/ QUOTE ]

agree, my 13.2hh native x takes me for miles and I'm erm
*shush* 11 stone

The views on here are so interesting, so I'd like to know what you think to my situation:

I'm currently losing weight, I've just been diagnosed with an underactive thyroid and I'm taking tablets. I'm 13st 10lbs and 5ft 2. I help my friend with her 14.1 welsh D. I muck out, groom, feed, water, hay etc, but I dont ride him as I feel I'm too fat. My friend thinks I'm talking rubbish.

Physically I'm not unfit, I walk 2 miles in half an hour and I can easily manage an hour of step aerobics.

Am I right to not ride him? or should I get on and stop worrying? Thoughts please x

To the OP I'd be better off judging it seeing a pic of you and said pony, even better a video or in person, as i think there are so many variables in terms of fitness of you both, height, riding ability etc that its really not possible to make generalised sweeping statements.

When I was cadging my hacks from a RS I rode "colin the cob" who wasn't a heavyweight just a heinz 57, approx 14-14.2hh and at 13st I was sure I was too heavy for him. I told the instructors my weight and concerns and they assured me i was fine for him, and since I valued their word and they had seen me ride plenty of times, I reluctantly accepted it.

Well b**ger me if the star didn't manage a 2 hr fast hack fine with me, and even beat the arab on the beach gallop!
grin.gif

I would ask an instructor or someone whose opinion you really value to assess you. If you can ride in a way that doesn't hinder the horse, I would think you should be ok, but as I say, you are really best getting someone knowledgeable to assess you in person.

[ QUOTE ]
I would say about 9 stone tops. We have a lightweight 14hh connemara and I am 8 1/2 stone and she's fine for the occasional hack.

[/ QUOTE ]

really

Our new 13.2hh/13hh dainty ponies are carrying 81/2-9 very easily up hills, across moors and stony tracks, for good long hacks.

I'd say 10 stone ish

I ride an 11.3 and im 8 1/2 stone. I have been XC on her and jumped some of the jumps in the 2ft6 track...struggling i think not! She is equally naughty with me as she is with the smaller ones! Little cheeky mare and isnt really a childs ride, shes fairly strong! i have a pic i posted on the other pony squishing thred of jumping the 2ft6 one, struggling with my weight....no, enjoying herself...YES!

XC
In fact slap my wrists im taking her out tonight!
I hate all these posts on your so bad pony squishing etc... blah blah blah. Shes perfectly capable of carrying my weigh we woudlnt get anywhere if she wasnt!

Flippin heck talk about opening a can of worms!

I am 5'6 and weigh about 10 1/2 stone and from what has been said some people think I would be terribly cruel riding him , others think it would be fine so no further ahead there then.
As for getting another equine, I don't want to buy another horse, one is plenty for me. All I am interested in doing is occasionaly riding my daughter's pony. :smir

Edited by ffgl because I got a little bit shirty and have now thought better of it!

durhamchace; get riding!!youre no way to heavy for him!
anyway imo its not your weight but the way u ride,
And to whoever said dont ride a connie if your over 9 stone?!!WHAT?!?!!!!
Im 5'2 8 and a half stone (on a good day)
In college i had a part time job at a pony dealing yard specialising in 12.2hh jumping ponies,
these were serious jumping machines(winners at 128cm grade a classes in dublin)
and we used to school them every day obviously at 30+ ponys in the yard his only other option would be child labour!
Am i cruel?
was he cruel?!

This takes me back to the day...

Me and a friend (weighing 7stone each) used to ride her 13.2hh New Forest Pony bareback round her farm. Inc gallop and jump. We had a whale of a time. Pony lived till she was well into her thirties, never lame or had back trouble.

I also rode the pony with friends sister who was a good 2-3 stone heavier than me.

If pony thought that was too heavy she certainly didn't show it. She was quite stubborn usually so if she hadn't liked it she'd have chucked us off

Just had a look on ebay and placed a bid on the pessoa sweetitch rug, seems to be the same fabric and design as the rambo but a bit cheaper, not keen on the colour mind!
